The explosion in people becoming aware of Old Tartarian buildings being repurposed is really cool.

I’m 38 and I had never heard of Tartaria, until recently. Not one mention of it in school. We have many old Tartarian buildings in my city, including old tunnels everywhere, which were blamed on the narcos when they were first discovered by the common folk.

Thank you for the discussion with Simon! It made me think about objects, buildings and places in a new way - and raised questions, such as how much authenticity in materials, that are helpful in appreciating "fake" heritage.

Nice to hear Simon and John's insight on authenticity. Perhaps the need for authenticity was understandable when accurate documentation and long-term archiving were limited in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Nowadays, however, perhaps it shouldn't matter as much when the architect, conservator, and the project team in general did their best due diligence and were upfront about where on the monument were restored/reconstructed and how, and the general public is duly informed. Better access to knowlege such as through the internet, better (and continuously improving) knowledge about past practices, new technology such as carbon dating are things nowadays. Regarding mentions about Japan's Ise Shrine: Most Japanese monuments undergo regular reconstruction - and some Western-style buildings also has some reconstruction works. This especially holds true for those that got lost through Japan's numerous earthquakes, or bombings during WW2, such as Tokyo Central Station.

Well if we have heritage buildings that were destroyed and had to be rebuilt but the fact that the building isn’t original we’ll never be able to do anything about. But imagine a historical bank building with a fancy facade, the building was built in 1885, it was just about to be restored and then after an earthquake only the undamaged facade and some of the side walls were still standing, they saved the facade to use it for rebuilding the building, now they’re starting from scratch with the original facade, they’re literally adapting to the exact same way the building site was built in 1885, even using the same style materials produced in the same way, and even bringing the materials to the construction site in vintage pickup trucks

Interesting that you didn't admit that the ACTUAL Stonehenge is a MODERN creation of the 20th century, with major work around 1914 and 1950s. Hmmm, why is that? I don't know, but I do know that it is the reason I won't be buying your book.

Anyone who has been knighted is promoting the (il)legitimacy of the crown. Nothing they write or say should be taken seriously.
