Fake Muskets in "Sharpe's Eagle"

In a previous video, I made the claim that the television show 'Sharpe' had tried to pass off modern firearms as muskets. So, I thought it'd be fun to make a very quick video about it!
This isn't the greatest sin in the world, given how they clearly attempted to cover up the inauthentic firearms, but in this scene- it is painfully obvious.

The Sharpe series was really cheaply made. They only used "proper", more expensive gear for the close up and hero shots. Everything else was as cheap as possible. As a result we got a great series with Sean Bean, set in a historic period that very few others have covered.

A lot of Hollywood "Muskets" were disguised cartridge weapons, a favorite in the was 45 -70 Springfield rifle or the Snyder rifle with a fake lock and hardware. Now come on Brandon, you're talking about an ITV film company here, a situation where the words 'Budget' and 'Shoestring' mean exactly the same thing! Still, keep up the well warranted attack on 'Washington' - I love it! By the way re: the comments below about Zulu and Zulu Dawn, it wasn't the scarcity of authentic Martinis why the extras are using Lee Metfords and SMLEs in the background - it was the cost of buying the Martini ammo! Back then good old .303 was far cheaper!

Even in Sergei Bondarchuk's Waterloo (1970), you can see some of the extras (which are real Red Army soldiers) holding Mosin Nagant rifles with the bayonets attached. It seems that from afar, Nagant rifles can look like muskets. In another Bondarchuk film, War and Peace, a lot of the soldiers also use Nagant rifles, but you can only see them if you pause at the right moment.

The groove issue is easy to explain - some soldiers would "carve" a groove into the stocks to get them tighter to their face for better aiming. About the differences in colour, in a later episode it is explained the 2nd Batt marched out with old muskets - as Simmerson says, the South Essex is all his which implies he raised them (a well mentioned bit of truth) so he would have equipped them as quickly as possible... So, its not outside the realms of possibility that Sir Henry simply grabbed hold of whatever muskets were close to hand and had them issued

You know the comments were so entertaining. If you are concerned about the nose piece of the muskets you might take a look at the 1774 Charleville. You will find it to be a good match for what you saw . But brace yourself because it also has those barrel bands you said wouldn't exist for years. The musket is French, and of the right era. It could have been picked from a battlefield. If done the British would have seen it as inferior, because after all it's not British! So it could well have been issued to a unit that they saw as barely fit for combat. The Charleville was an excellent musket and would have done a fine job. Far better then a pike which would likely have been the other choice. Don't be so critical, the props aren't the message The message is in the storyline. What next eill you complain the actors in the battle aren't actually being shot????

Under the impression they were operating on what might today be considered an "indie" budget at the time, and given the raw surplus of Mosin's and how little they cost (compared to a brown bess) filling in the background guns with them after dressing them up makes sense so they'll still have money to dress, pay, and move the actors to locations. It's like Sharpe said when asked what you do when you don't have any money "You make do without".

A series made for British TV in the early 90's continuing to 97 and based on a series of novels. It was bound to have some issues with historical accuracy and have a shoe-string budget. Frankly, since it was made by ITV and was a war series (not by the BBC and a 'romance') it's remarkable it ran for so long and even had some later contributions. Even more remarkable that it ran so long with a main character from Yorkshire.

I will never understand why directors don't contact reenactment and dress up play groups to help with this. Really, most groups I know if you tell them you need 20 or so for extra work in this period dress. Will give lunch and 30$ for each member. Most would do it just for the chance to dress up. It would be cheaper and easier and a heck of a lot more accurate.

This isn't even the most egregious use of the Nagant i've seen in film. There's this one horrible fim (i think it was sniper two) where tome berenger sings the praises the "Mauser, 7.92" he is holding, which is CLEARLY an unaltered M91/30. The "casing" is called a front band, something you should know since the style in the pictures is based on the French Charleville musket. The Charleville was the inspiration for American military muskets right up until the last US Army issue musket, the Model 1842. Its pretty obvious the prop department was trying to disguise modern rifles as Charleville muskets.

I watched Deadwood with an industrial archaeologist once. It's almost as bad. And while we're on it, in Master and Commander, why does the Sargeant at Arms use a musket, rather than a shotgun, to shoot a bird? I'll set aside the reasons why that scenario is unlikely to begin with. I love the gritty self surgery scene that follows, but he could've been hit by a few stray pellets instead...

Do you think it would vastly alter the outcome of a battle or would the effect of the increased firepower be largely negligible on the battle as a whole?

@@vals5816 I specified that if Sharpe's regiment had them, not the entire British army. It is pretty obvious that giving any army of that era anymore more advanced would make them easily able to best their rivals (Hell, just giving them all capslock rifled muskets would be a major game changer), but the question was if there was only a single unit with the more advanced rifles if that unit would have a large enough effect to really matter to the battle as a whole.

If you watch the final battle scene in Sharpe’s Gold (Battle of Salamanca) a French soldier is briefly seen standing on his own and firing a gun that is so blatantly a bolt-action! Seriously, check it out!

And they would have gotten away with it too if we'd only watched Sharpe on 90's TV screens.

I was just watching this clip from Sharpe a couple weeks ago and I noticed this detail as well. Although I deduced them to being mockups (or actual) of French Muskets, and the creative license taken by the director for the lack of proper Bess's was a "supply shortage." That's how I tried to make sense of what I was seeing, but I also knew that for the shot they had to put together what they could get. Even in reenacting, as you will know, unless a group puts their foot down on a particular model or musket you will get everything under the sun that looks the part showing up. Even for movie shoots, the reenactors bring their own equipment and wardrobe will supply what you don't have. (You also get more $ for bringing your own equipment, especially if you're providing a musket) I like American Revolution era and up reenacting and even movie shoots as you can have a Hodgepodge of different muskets and it would fly. Now, a Napelonic British Regiment just off the boat from England in Port/Spain? I would lean to them all having 3rd Pattern muskets. No reason for 2nd patterns or God forbid some how Springfields in the mix. And I would only think of a Charleville being in there if they had been on the March for months, or in Battle etc something where they would need to supplement their issued equipment for captured muskets.

Might be an idea to set up a Patreon, BritishMuzzleLoaders (If you don't follow him on youtube i'm sure you'd love him) has 18k subs and gets $400 a month from it, if you have anymore ambitious goals for the channel as it continues you grow it might be good for supporting them! :)

In keeping with the spirit of you leaving baits for future episodes. You mentioned Hornblower in one of those landing videos. So, one has to wonder if you are going to make a video about that series...

Might we get your oppinion on the British "95th foot" from the Hornblower episode the Frogs and the Lobsters, if you've seen that show? Uniform, armament, behaviour in combat and so on? It's one of my favourite episodes of the series(largely because it really takes place outside the main character's comfort zone at sea), but I'd like to know if its portrayal of the Redcoats is actually at least somewhat solid, or if it's just the utter tripe film portrayals tend to be. Oh, and I want to say this as well; love your channel. I follow several of the bigger youtube channels that deal with things medieval, but it's great to find one talking of the mid-modern era. The fact that you manage to present these things in such a humble, and yet at times so self awarely petty and humourous way just adds to the historical material. On that note, you're probably the most dapper guy I've seen online.

British law requires that all weapons carried in reenactments or living history groups be rendered incapable of firing, there is a company in India that makes copies of historically accurate weapons that are shipped without touch holes being drilled out to comply with these laws

It looks like they are using Spanish musket. They have the brass fittings and barrel rings. Also they are fighting in Spain/Portugal at this point where those weapons would be readily available in the case of a shortage.
