A little surprised you didn't mention the obv/rev orientation is wrong. The fake uses medal alignment and not coin alignment. Granted, some fakes will have the correct orientation so this is not a fool proof check (albeit an obvious one if wrong). Also, be careful using calipers in that fashion as you could easily get a false negative (or positive). You want the prongs of the calipers to be on the same plane as the coin and not perpendicular to it.

I highly recommend the Sigma Metalytics precious metals verifier. I almost bought a 20g Gold bar from the Perth Mint in 'original' packaging but when I tried to verify it the Sigma determined that it was an undetermined metal plated with 24k gold. I did an internet search on these bars and found numerous high-quality Chinese fakes available. The seller claimed he had purchased it from APMEX and it was guaranteed by them. I did purchase a PAMP 1oz gold bar from this seller that passed the Sigma verification.

I bought a 1/4 oz American Eagle gold coin from a reputable local coin dealer. I melted it to make something else out of it and it was fake. It was a tungsten gold alloy. The weight and diameter were both right. I did some research and found a company in China that makes them to order. I would suggest most of their gold reserves are fake. They make a thick outer coating that fools the X-ray machines.
@Spegtacular4 жыл бұрын
A sigma tests the inner part of the metal, so it wouldn't get past it. Here's the thing, every metal is different in its composition. It is physically impossible to have the right weight, diameter, and thickness of a coin if it's made out of a different metal. One of those three had to be off.
@alpha95264 жыл бұрын
SpegTacular the density difference between 24k gold and tungsten is .26%. If you make the weight exactly the same the dimension difference is .0017%. When you alloy the two you reduce those numbers even further. If I put two coins in front of you could you tell if one of them was .0017% different? Divide that by diameter and thickness. So the thickness would be .00085% off, could you spot that? That is comparing pure tungsten with pure gold, make it an alloy now divide that in two and you have a coin .000425% off. So yes you are right it is physically impossible to have it exactly right but it can be so close it is almost impossible to detect it.
