Hello there, so I have an inaugural r5 coin and I have only one. It's part of my collection and I just wanted to hear your opinion. The coin does have scuff marks and some wear and tear however not excessively. I inspected the imprint of both the building and coat of arms on the reverse and they seem verily ingrained. My concern is that though the coin is magnetic it's not overly so, if that makes sense. Does that mean there is a chance it's a fake or that I'm simply using a magnet that's not strong enough? I would love to know your thoughts. Thanks.

Hi Tamzin. If it's slightly magnetic, then it's normal as R1, R2 and older R5 coins are nickel plated copper. So the magnet is only attracting the thin nickel plating. 10, 20 and 50 cent has a steel center is much more magnetic. You need to compare your pres R5 to a older nickel R5 (not the bi-metal of today), is it the same magnet strength as other nickel coins? Also drop your presidential R5 on a hard surface, then a old nickel R5. Does it make the same ping sound? If it makes a different ping it means its not made of the same metal and could be fake. You can't got wrong with the ping test. Two of the same coins need to sound the same. If you do have a scale, normal nickel R5 are supposed to be 7grams. The counterfeit will be slightly thinner and lighter. Even if it's a fake it will be a nice addition to your collection as you don't often come across fake coins. I've only ever come across this one I made the video on. Keep on collecting! Regards Robert

@@grooviesouthafricancoins7231 Thanks for the reply. I will definitely try out the methods you suggested, fingers-crossed it's real. I'd keep it either way as I haven't come across another of it's kind. Stay safe.

If your coins are from pocket change they are circulated and are generally worth face value. A coin is only worth as much as a person will pay for it. That being said most collectors have circulated Madiba coins. That should not discourage you from collecting though, its a great hobby.
