Agreed... Got mine in '96. They've been played on for countless hours, dragged to multiple continents, have rocked more parties and events than I could ever remember (for various reasons), and they still work as perfectly as they day I bought them from Midwest Stereo on Clark St. in Chicago. Definitely one of the best purchases of my entire lifetime!

Honestly, these days I'd be okay with a Frankentechnics, as long as it works well, the seller is honest about it and the price is okay. It's always good to get a few hints on what to look for, of course, so thanks for this video, it will certainly help quite a few people.

Thanks for all your comments on this one, everybody! One thing I’d like to address as I see a couple of comments related to it… The reality is, that as magic as these classic decks are, there ARE some very good alternative choices out there, mostly based on the Hanpin Super OEM platform. We’re talking about things like the Reloop 7000/8000s. Check out my review of the 7000mk2s for a full explainer. One of things I like about Jay’s channel is that, as devoted as he is to all things Technics, he still has respect for such alternatives too, just as I do. So if you’re struggling to find a really trustworthy set of 1200s at a price you can afford, don’t feel bad about going for some Super OEMs instead. They’ll serve you very well.

I have a Technics MK2, Technics MK5, and a Synq X-TRM 1 (Super OEM). I can totally agree, the Synq is of excellent quality. I love all of my turntables, no question, but the Synq does not feel cheap or anything. A downside I see compared to the MK5 is that is has only 3 grams of anti-skating, but that's what the MK2 has, too, and it's not a show stopper. Still, I will never sell my pair of Technics, hands down.

What I like about the MKII is how ridiculously over-engineered and tank-like they are. The Super OEMS (and the MK7 for that matter) do work just as well (and often have all sorts of extra features you may or may not care about) but don’t have that quality feel.

Years ago I had a second hand pair of SL-1200MK2's and sold them for a brand new SL-1210M5G at JunoRecords and when I used them for the first time I immediately realized something was wrong with them because I couldn't beatmacth properly and I had to be constantly correcting the mix. I ended up selling them and bought a second hand pair of SL-1210MK2 and all problems were over. I'd stress that a "frankendeck" isn't a bad thing on its own as long as it's represented truthfully. Most of these parts are 100% interchangeable, and it's probably better that the deck reached you with working parts from the wrong make of table than broken. It's only when people claim that the deck is near mint that it's a problem.

Haven't gotten on my Technic 1200's MKIII's in over a year. I have about 2000 vinyl records. Looking to get rid of 1400 records. I was even contemplating getting rid of my Technics. I'm also into production and my studio has grown substantially. I primarily play everything off my Pioneer CDJ 3000's and SP-16. However, this has really changed my mind. Believe me, they're still practically in new condition. Not a single scratch on them. After watching this video, I couldn't even find replacements. After what MoJaxxx said about the MK7's... it ain't happening.

I kept buying used MK3Ds online and they kept showing up damaged or not working right. Maybe the shipping or even just a lie about the condition of the tables. I eventually sold them all off for parts. After eating my losses and recuperating my money, I bought MK7s I've heard many people say they aren't great but I have nothing bad at all to say about them. If you can swing the money in time, give them a go. I love them.

I own a pair in the last 5 years and also play casually on mk2-s (before I also owned a very mint pair of mk2's bought them on eBay around 400£ in 2011 maybe) but I love the M5G's also the design is what made me go for them, but don't really find any difference in beat matching....I admit they might need to get a maintenance check up or service and now I know who will I call or book but otherwise sometimes for mins I have 2 tracks playing without touching and so does the mk2s too.Depends how long are your mixes but you always have to work your decks.

I sent him some photos and he's going to do the work, but noted that some of the components are from a Sonora phonograph and that the governor weight and reproducer are from different phonographs as well lol. It appears this is a tale as old as time. I have a pair of old MKIIs that have been through a LOT. Getting ready to swap them out for a pair of Reloops just for the sake of ultrapitch. I got 3x 1210 MK2 - 2 of them I bought NM couple years ago, still had the original manual and box that says Technics made in Osaka, Japan !!! On the back of your Technics there is a serial number. Based on the number you can figure out when they produced it. 1 of the 3 is from 2004 and the last 2 from 2010...when you open the platter you can also see the difference between earlier models and later models, based on the motor and torque. I wouldn't say after market ones are necessarily fake...fake is to replicate the Technics 1200's...that has been done many times...I believe in 2010 Technics lost their license, and so other manufactures were allowed to replicate the 1200. Btw that being said. This video is extremely important and definitely more of these should be made.

Over the years, I’ve had about 25 pairs of Technics. When I was a kid, I used to scour The Loot for them, and they were cheap! It became a buying and selling thing. We are talking the early to late 90’S. I even owned a few new sets at Uni which we used to get from ‘Get in the mix’ for £299 each! My last set of Technics were 12 years ago, MINT, as new in boxes SL1200. Never used, paid some fit bird £500 for the pair with the matching 5 channel Technics mixer!! Had Stanton 150’s since, amazing but poor tonearm. Then T120c’s, lovely but pitch fault on one that was not repairable. I’ve now bought a new set of Audio Technica LP140XP’s. Are they as good as mk2’s, no. BUT, they’re new, have brilliant motors, sound great, mix great and are stable. Plus are new! No more used Technics for me. They are all properly mashed up. Awesome video and great info! Let me play devils advocate. Not everyone has oem parts readily available at the time of their project and sometimes in order to get that table moving, they are forced to use what they have at their disposal. Yes, all sellers should be upfront at the time of purchase. It’s only fair.

Been through some sh*t trying to get a pair of these imported from Japan. After a month of waiting I ended up receiving a USB cable in the post. Guys ebay acct is suspended now. Yeah cheers mate. Ended up having to buy a pair locally from some moron that was using a slipmat on top of the rubber slipmat. These decks are now mostly in possession of utter thugs and clueless knob heads that think they're sitting on a gold mine when it's usually a massively damaged, scratched up piece of sh*t example of a deck that they expect mint condition prices for. There's two locals I've dealt with are selling 100v imports from Japan - it took a lot of pressuring them to admit that they weren't even in our local voltage and neither seemed to see how that would devalue them even slightly... "Just use the step up transformer".. How about f**k you? It's been an absolute headache just to get a pair of these and I am frankly burnt out from it all. I do have a pair of mk3d's now that I've converted to 240v so hopefully thats the end of having to deal with dipsh*ts.

Hi Guys, One quite Major point of Concern. "J " was saying about the "Skate " Cap not having the Correct Numbers on. I think he said it should go up to 6 ? But it actually only went up to 3. The Scale / Calibration of how much Skate is applied in alignment with Counterbalance / Stylus Weight Setting would be out of Wack and would therefore be Detrimental to Stylus Ware and / or your Precious Vinyl Collection. Regards Andy
@Mojaxx

The Mk5s do indeed have a scale on that cap which goes up to 6, so whilst you absolutely have a point, you should probably take it up with Technics. ;)

I didn't know they were discontinued. It's a real shame since Audio-Technica seem like a close copy at a fraction of the price. Admittedly and obviously, I'm no expert on record decks! They look right but likely not of the same quality.

A cottage industry has long existed in 'refurbing' and customising Technics. There's nothing really wrong with turning two badly damaged units into one good one, or making turntables out of the parts pile. In skilled hands it'll end up as good as any other deck. The problem comes when sellers are not honest about what you're getting or passing off a bitsa deck as a 'collector grade' original.

Really interesting watch. Having been around music and DJ's since the mid 80's (lots of my mates had Technics when I was growing up) I myself only started collecting vinyl in the last 5 years. Naturally I wanted a pair of 1200's but the price was steep. I actually got close to buying a reconditioned pair on eBay but in the end I went for a brand new pair of Pioneer PLX 500's. I'm glad I did, as I'm sure those 1200's from eBay would've been a mish mash of other parts. The Pioneer decks look and feel great and cost a fraction of the price. All things considered I'm happy with the outcome.

Well 'well were does one start. I bought two SL 1200s 15 plus years ago and are working in good order and 5 or 6 years ago bought another one which have not used yet and reason is I'm trying build 3 Deck system' and other Deck was scratched by a cat or dog side the lid it self, and the rest is ok. I bought it for £150.00 at and some point I need take a look inside to make sure it a genuine SL1200 I will be very disappointed but, having say it could be the last of true SL1200 I hope so, even though I bought £150.00 at the time, now you've got thinking and I'll have wait until I setup and take a look to see and have this feeling they are the real deal' the phones look the old not this USB BS, and I'll check Jay on his video presentation Mo thank for bringing this to our attention, it reminds of something do you remember the kit car in the early 90s a throwback 2 different cars put together, it not to say I drive and just Example as to what was back than and now the SL1200/10 is Under threat and became Obsolete ,you see it coming because, DJ don't want carry vinyl like they use to ,and digital age has take over, and manufactures ,are make vests sums of because, some DJs are lazy, and want press buttons, and not use turntable's any more, and manufactures ,are ''laughing'' at the upcoming DJ who soled Decks or to up with jones and keep with latest trends and don't want to put the work in and, downloading the latest sounds, it very well having that 'but DJing is still an art ,as far as I'm concerned I'm not being funny no one really looks at DJs the same way they use to, one there on their laptop, and no one takes any notice, and if we didn't allow to happen Decks will be around for long time' it break my heart to hear this, this has to be said' I don't say this often but I'm going to say it any way. If CDs was a thing that money could buy CDs would live, and records would die! and reason I say this because records getting so expensive and CDs cheap, and cheerful, and you know true so, I still love my vinyl. I know there is history and a story tell, and with CDs you can't tell a story, one you can't see the label, speed, cover listing of track, and think these new SL1200/1210 only last 5 years I've decks second hand and sold them to buy new one ,and 15 years plus and still going strong, on that note long the SL1200/10 we need them backing the club and the CDs to stay in the computer and only for demos and for playing otherwise will this problem for to come and let us all go back to basics so we save the SL1200/10 from becoming thing of past...!! Stay blessed 🙏🏿🙏🏿😇😇Mo and Jay keep the good work🤛🏿👊🏿🤜🏿

Nice video. What you should do is actually make a full detailed review video on the classic technics then discuss them as options if bought secondhand compared with brand new alternatives. Because everyone knows 1200s are the standard other decks are compared with it makes comparison a bit easier. Eg should someone starting out buy secondhand mk ii’s in pristine condition or just working condition or better off buying reloop or pioneer. And then also, if you have mk ii’s is it worth selling them and buying one of these newer style turntables
