Good to know for next time. I forgot they were there until it was too late. I really appreciate the responses, not many KZbinrs are as helpful. I just started this year and I am fumbling my way through it by watching videos and reading books. I promise I won't keep bothering you but what type of clay are you using? Did you use water to thin the tanning oil you were using to keep it hydrated? Thanks again, I truly appreciate the answers and more importantly the videos. By far the best bobcat videos I've seen and I've seen A LOT. I was really intimidated to even start until I watched your series. Ive gained some confidence that I really needed thanks to you taking your time to teach.

I’m glad to hear that Noah. I’m using regular potters clay. The tanning oil I’m using is water solvable so I use water yes. If you like to see more tutorial videos you might want to consider joining the membership , it started 10 months ago and it has lots of videos already and keep getting bigger and bigger in selection.

Thanks. I have subscribed if that's what you mean. I have scrolled through a lot of your videos that I will watch at some point but I'm trying to focus on this bobcat for the time being. I have only mounted a squirrel so far. I've tanned a handful of raccoons, rabbit, opossum but just for the fur. Fleshing it out today when it thaws, splitting the lips etc and starting the tanning process. You never have any issues down the road without moving the ear cartilage? You are the only person I have watched who doesn't.

@@noahlaribee4216 no issues with leaving the ear liners in.. but remember you can only do this on small animals like bobcat, lynx, fox size that have very thin cartilages.. . A lot of guys do this, even with deer and larger animals when they use Bondo to build up the earliners... by the way I didnt mean subscribing.. I meant Membership.. it gives you a different access to the tutorial videos that otherwise you wont be able to watch. for example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqDdlp1thbVle7M&ab_channel=ArtofTaxidermy

I use that little spatula tool on ears like that too! Helps alot on squirrel and opossum ears. Yes, I turn ears on possums.

Do you ever do soft mounts on coyotes, foxes or anything? If so, would you consider making a video on that? Thanks.

No I haven’t done one yet. I don’t find them difficult at all. It’s just the matter of someone orders one. But if I end up doing one for sure there will be a video of it.

My cat was a success and I genuinely owe a lot of that to you, so thank you. Whatever I decide to attempt next, I will search your videos to use as guidance. One last question for the bobcat though. Because I'm an amateur hobbyist I do not own or have a need for professional supplies so what type of paint would you recommend for the nose?

Glad I could help!… get some inexpensive acrylic paint .. Matt finish.. mix and blend to the desired colour and maybe thin it down with water and super gently apply with a fine brush.

I know you didn't skin this animal but I can't find any information on what to do with or around the dew(?) claws on the back of the front leg. Any thoughts? Thanks!
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy Жыл бұрын
Tricky question to answer with words. But skinning a few claw is much easier than the toes. The end result should lead to having the the claw itself attached to the skin no more bone .. same with the toes all bones should come out except the claw.

It also works very nicely to leave the cased skin as is. Put the form legs into the skin, then pull the whole skin over the form. Much less sewing that way.

I do weasels and pine Martin that way too. I’m sure it could work with the bobcat too 👍

What kind of size and thread do you recommend to sew a bobcat up? Thanks
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
I’d suggest a small three sided needle and 15 lbs fireline fishing line if dorsal seeing. And if belly sewing I guess you can use a regular round needle too.

Have you watched some of Brian’s videos. He will explain why he sculpted the head like he did. I love your work. Keep up the videos. I look forward to them.

No haven’t had the chance to watch him. I’m sure he’s got them for a reason . I was just more comfortable doing it like before. But his forms are awesome.

Actually the Bill Lancaster line of bobcat manikins are more anatomically correct.. The best on the market.. Also the bobcat manikins that were once KB manikins are really good too. Now sold by McKenzie..

When do I want to put the skin on the form? After I apply tanning solution or do I tan it and break the hide? I'm worried about the face drying out and becoming stiff after I tan it if it dries. Thanks
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy Жыл бұрын
You do all your tanning work first. And then put the hide on the form. You can keep it moist by spraying water on it. They won’t dry that fast anyway.
