Peachtree City, GA is home to Falcon Field, also known as Atlanta Regional Airport. It is January 2022, and I am flying in N70TB from Shelbyville, TN (near Nashville) to Falcon Field. It is a bittersweet day - I am excited about the changes that are coming to my Bonanza (done by Gardner Lowe Aviation at Falcon Field), but I also knew I wouldn't get to fly my Bonanza again for several months.

I love the Shelbyville airport and the Bell Buckle Cafe. A decade ago it was even better - they had three airport cats (aptly names Stick, Rudder, and Black) which made KSYI a must-stop for my daughter on the trips south. Sadly the city one day decided that FBO cats were not professional, and they got rid of them. - Martin

@@martinpauly get ready for the chaos to be coming before too long to SYI. Middle Tennessee State University is moving its entire flight training program from Murfreesboro Airport to Shelbyville because the people that moved next to the airport successfully griped enough to run MTSU flight students away. SYI will be the epicenter of all their training activities in a year, or two.

The Bonanza is getting a nice upgrade, but very different from an A320, of course. 😁 Different solutions for different missions - I have no need for the redundancy of the A320 avionics, or autoland, RNP AR, or CAT III landings. I like nice avionics, but the Bonanza is also a joy to handfly, so I don't want the autopilot to have all the fun. Best regards, Martin

Looks like everyone is guessing Martin! LOL Lets see, engine new, sounds good and strong, add a turbo? Nah, not 2 months for that. New all glass? Nah, not 2 months either. Paint is good, interior looks good. Maybe retrofit for aerobatics, like Scott Perdue's Bonanza? Hmm. Maybe PT6 conversion?? That would be very cool!! And very $$$$. By process of elimination, I'm guessing new PFD, maybe duel, all glass w/G5 backup, w/complete new panel. With all new LED lights and wiring. All that might be 2 months? I've heard stories about removing 100+ lbs of wire and other things not needed. We'll see. 8) --gary

My money is on a complete panel upgrade. 1. Dream Choice - Garmin G3X stack with the Garmin autopilot (it works with Foreflight, so no worries although Pilot is really good also) 2. Economical Choice - Aspen / Avidyne and keeps the current A/P and JPI. If it's Aspen - you really need both the PDF and MFD for serious IFR. Looking at the Avidyne or tablet really distracts the scan and increases head movements. This will really be interesting because Martin designs avionics systems. So I finally subscribed Martin ... safe flights!

So, lessee Gardner-Lowe Aviation does repair work, as well as avionics upgrades. So, I guess we're going to be seeing some new glass in the cockpit shortly. I'm not sure whether to take bets on Aspen or Dynon, but I'm hoping for Dynon. Going to see a new S-Tec 3100 in the panel, too? :p Okay, another questions for you. You were approaching Falcon from the Northwest. Why did you enter a right downwind? I mean, a long straight in would have appeared to be the best, followed by a right base entry. I don't understand travelling half way down the airport to enter the right downwind. Now, I'm not saying it's wrong, but I don't understand the decision.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 2 жыл бұрын
Let me answer the second question first. I rarely go straight to a long final when approaching an uncontrolled field, unless I am pretty sure there is no other traffic in the pattern. I could hear over CTAF that there were several other aircraft using the field, so spending an extra two minutes to get to abeam the runway at a safe distance and then enter the downwind from there (through a U-turn, in this case) felt right. It all depends, of course - had there been no traffic in the pattern but a couple of other aircraft shortly behind me, then a straight-in approach would have had an advantage. Now on to the speculation. 😁 I guess I can't comment much on what you wrote without giving it all away. In terms of scope of the work, your thoughts are quite reasonable. As for the details (which products, brands, etc.) - we'll just have to wait a little longer. Best regards, Martin
@GaryMCurran
@GaryMCurran 2 жыл бұрын
@@martinpauly great explanation. I heard the traffic calls, so I knew the airport was busy. It's been 40+ years since I've flown, and I guess it shows. Your call was absolutely correct and the best for the situation. I am looking forward to seeing what you've chosen and I know 70TB is going to be far more capable because of it.

@martinpauly
@martinpauly 2 жыл бұрын
This video may be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnupfqlrlqmZqK8 For overheating, using a lower resolution and lower bit rate can help. Of course, the Hero 4 doesn't offer much to begin with... I suspect if you are working with the original battery, it is quite old by now and can't hold much of a charge anymore. An upgrade to a newer model (8 or 9 are both very good, as is the new 10 of course) would really help. Regards, Martin

How do you keep your GoPros from running out of battery and from overheating? My 10 shuts off if it gets hit at all, and battery lasts an hour max.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 2 жыл бұрын
Josh, I find that I can get a good 90-120 minutes out of one battery charge. When flights are longer, I charge the cameras in cruise using the USB port. Overheating can be a problem on hot days if a camera is exposed to sunlight continuously, which is mostly the one facing forward. I found that building a little cover from a piece of scratch paper helps keep them cool. I also had good luck using my air vents and sunvisors to direct airflow towards the cameras to cool them.
