In this falconry video, I demonstrate how to cope the beak and talons of a red tailed hawk. In captivity, raptors have a rich diet and as such their beak and talons grow rapidly. Once a year they need to be trimmed and sharpened. This is called coping. THIS IS NOT PAINFUL IN ANY WAY TO THE RAPTOR! The tips of the beak and talons are made out of the same material as fingernails. They is no pain experienced by the bird at all.

Not related to coping, but it’s so interesting how hawks’ eyes change color with age. Anvil is an adult bird but her eyes are still turning brown. My first passage redtail’s eyes were brown by his first winter

I find that using a pair of large nail clippers to do the primary work and then using a dremel or file to finish works better for me. Often times just trimming either side with the clippers is enough and they can finish shaping the beak on their own on appropriatly sized boney items.

such a pretty girl! (red tails are the primary hawk in my area so I might be a touch biased)

completely a side note, but when I was a kid and had budgies (a cockatiel too, but she was waaaaay smarter) that weren't always great about keeping their beaks trimmed on the cuttle bones so I would trim their beaks with nail clippers - which they did NOT appreciate, but had to be done

awesome video! can you let me know that model of dremel they used?

Beginners should keep in mind that using power tools for coping generates heat through friction. This heat can accumulate, potentially cauterizing blood vessels in the beak and damaging sinus channels.

Will hawks not use (or should they not) a gritty perch for their talons and cuttlebones for their beaks like parrots? Our resident Cooper's female loves to use the collars on the branches of our dwarf pear trees to hone her beak and talons, to the point shes actuslly ruined a branch. It seems like they're inclined to self hone - or is this a behavorial difference between accipiters and buteos?

Sometimes it helps. I've never seen a bird that never needs coping.

Yeah…ok. I can’t use a dremel (hands shake too much), plus the bird FREAKS at the sound (that got better, but still) & hates the feel of the wheel on his beak. He is calm & easy while filing though. How about a vid on coping with files for us troglodytes? TIA

It looks more like a swift poke kinda like a shot a vet would give if administered right?

It would be nice if the term Hawking was used more instead of falconry...

It would be even more nice if pedantry was less prevalent.

@@StoneE4 this isn't about pedantry. It's about using more specific terms to talk about what sort of species you're using to hunt with. Hawking was a popular term when people were actually using hawks instead of falcons to hunt prey... We're talking about many different species of birds with different traits. I'm guessing you think it's cool to say you're practicing falconry if you actually have an owl? That seems very stupid to me. Maybe we can get a burkitshi to weigh in on what they think.

@@xephael3485 Right... Sure thing... And the apprentice in this video should be using the terms "buzzardry" or "buteory" because he isn't flying a falcon or a hawk. 🙄

honestly this just shows how ridiculous this sport can be...you're having to cope beak and talons because this bird is in an artificial environment...she is ready to be released and you can re trap another one this season if you truly are in this sport for the conservation aspect of the sport (which also isn't needed for red tails anymore anyway but that's another story)
