In this falconry video I discuss a common mistake that many apprentice falconers make when trapping red tailed hawks. Birds of prey of all kinds, from hawks and falcons to eagles and owls, have been trained by humans for thousands of years. Always know the falconry laws, traditions and procedures in your region and follow them accordingly.

Here in the midwest I would say the same confusion can be made with a juvenile red-shouldered hawk. A young female can be mistaken for a young male red-tail. I've made that mistake while birding. To the untrained they may look the same in-hand.Thanks for the info!

Perfect timing! Going out with my sponsor this weekend for his new bird. I have my facilities inspection next Monday, and hope to trap my first bird the following weekend.

Ben, in your opinion would it be ethical to build a nesting platform in a tree on your own land to entice a particular species of raptor to nest there, and then take one of the young family birds after they've fledged?

A bird from the wild is a bird from the wild. Nothing wrong if it happens to be at your house. It would just make things more convenient

You can see it like this: you gave a nesting place and the trade off is you get of of the siblings (and that particular sibling is getting bigger survival chance after his first year with you)

Some years ago I was asked if I had an empty mews. A young redtail had gotten blown down in a windstorm and there were no nests around. I drove up to see what looked like a brancher redtail in a box. A little shook up, but aware and not injured. An experienced falconer and two fish cop biologists proclaimed it so. Back then they welcomed a falconer taking a raptor to rehab. Bird was a mental case. No corolation between weight and attitude. It did actually come off a light pole and kill what turned out to be a feral domestic rabbit. I intermewed "Tully" twice. The third summer, he molted into a classic Swainson's hawk ! I fed him up in time for some massive kettles of hawks to form in our valley. I like to think he made it, but I don't miss him.

I trapped a “red tail” called my sponsor MEDIATELY and he was like “yeahhhh THATS definitely a red shouldered hawk. And now I know a few more species we get around here that could be mistaken for RTH.

Gee...in the long ago, in the age BI, people would often look at a *B O O K* , those paper things, no battery required, sometimes with colour pictures, even birds...I believe, in those times, one could find titles like, ooh, "Raptors of North America", or "Trapping Essentials an Illustrated Guide to Trapping Raptors”... amazing! 🤣

If you do have time, can you do an episode about the impact of Pokemon on Falconry. I am not legally a falconer yet as although I gave the exam, I had to leave the USA due to a visa issue. I noticed that a lot of the individuals in the falconry community (genz and millennials) joined as their interest in nature came from roaming around the woods and playing pokemon. Great video as always Ben. I bought your book and it has helped Buster from Georgia Mountain Falconry write out his manual as well. Thank you for the outstanding work and contributions in this old tradition. 😊
