Ty so much Ben, great stuff! So educational! Just landed 20 plus acres bordered by 3 sides of state property in Eureka, Mt. Reading and watching as much as possible. Just in search of a mentor to get going. Troy or missoula looks like my best options. So excited! Your videos are invaluable. I was a wildlife management major in college. I think the only A I recieved was in ornithology, lol Always been a fan of BOP! my retirement plan in play, I am 55, u gotta live for something. A great active lifestyle for us baby boomers! Good evening Ben, I agree with you that goshawks are the most demanding falcon predators. But hunting with them is amazing. They do not tolerate falconry hods, although captured individuals can be taught to hods rather than imprints. Hods must be spacious and Arabic is better because it does not catch feathers on the nape of the neck. There is a sky trial in Utah in 2 weeks. If you are there, please make a video. Have a nice day.

This brought to mind that I have seen red-tailed Hawks in many videos, but, from many of your comments, it seems that Peregrines are the most "agreeable"?? It might be interesting to see a video discussing a kind of order of difficulty in handling, training, hunting, from, let's say, Goshawks to ?? From this video, it seems that a Goshawk is one of the most difficult, but rewarding, although you seem to rather like Peregrines...wait! You "like" them all ;-). From Kestrels to Golden Eagles! Thanks for yet another fun and interesting video!

Ben a video I've been looking for is a video where someone lays out all the falcons an apprentice falconer can own either caught birds or imprent birds.
@ClayCB3 жыл бұрын
Ben might chime in on this one, I have done some research on the topic myself. The answer is it varies. The state you live in may have restrictions on what species apprentices are allowed. Federally there are no restrictions on species, except you cannot have an "imprint", so refer to your state laws on legal species. Then there's your sponsor. A sponsor may be more open minded to what he/she will allow you to have. Others, not so much. So you have 2 funnels to get through. State law, then a sponsor's requirement. As far as falcons go, every state will allow American kestrel as an apprentice bird. Some of the potential sponsors I have spoken with were open to the idea of a "chamber raised" peregrine, and passage prairie falcon. Peregrines are easier to train. Prairies are more impatient, and broad in hunting style. But still doable. Peregrines are expensive to buy ($1500+). Tgats a lot of money to have flying around. Also you'll need expensive telemtry/gps.
@chrisgibson48163 жыл бұрын
It depends on state. Generally speaking, you will be limited to an American Kestrel, or Red Tailed Hawk, wild take, 1st year bird if its a red tail. As said before, your sponsor will also have a say. I flew a kestrel first and then a red tail. Each taught me A LOT, though they taught me very different things.

If there is ever a chance either in your Buteos video or another on Red Shoulder Hawks any information about them
@orphydianwildlife4733 жыл бұрын
Talking here in Europe. Before the trend and convenience of importing exotic species from Americas it seems that the European Buteos (Common Buzzard, Long legged buzzard etc) was indeed used in falconry even for hunting. I wonder if do you know somebody weird enough and stubborn enough who still trains them😀 I know not the most aggresive and fast bird but passion is passion
@kimpattiasina1898 Жыл бұрын
A red tail hawk is a buteo so it is a Buzzard but in america they call it a "hawk" but treu hawks (accipiter) are sparrowhawks, goshawks and shikras. And in the accipiter family are harriers, sea-eagles, kites, honey buzzards, buzzards, treu hawks and the buzzards that called "hawks".

Hi Ben, thanks for this video is very informative, and thanks for the book recommendation, i do bird control with harris hawks an I've read the harris hawks revolution, despite is a book focused in hunting is a helpful reading for what i do, do you know any book more focused to the behavioural aspects of these "close to the buteos" animals?
