This video was _enormously_ helpful. I mentioned elsewhere that I'm writing about falconry and my birds of choice are gyrs. I have the big bible of falconry "The Art of Falconry" but videos like this are just _so_ helpful. Thank you _so_ much!

Agreed. Enormously helpful to me too but for a different reason! We just bought a cabin in Alaska and it’s on a Gyrfalcon Drive. I just wanted to know how to say it, but I ended up watching and enjoying the whole video!

Another great video, Ben. As you said, gyrs often tangle themselves up when tied to their blocks. My gyrs will pivot around and around in the same direction while atop their blocks. Their jesses hang down and so the leash gets wrapped around the post numerous times. When that happens, of course, the leash won't unwrap itself when the falcon bates, and your bird is in trouble if you're not watching carefully. Good advice to keep a close eye on tethered gyrs.

I love these. I think what stands out is your ability to speak to the behaviors of these various raptors when it comes to hunting methods. Also the way they tend to react toward the falconer. I don't see this level of knowledge imparted from anyone else right now. (lots of great falconers, but few getting into the nitty gritty of behavior) Keep it up!

Video Request... I know this isn't a bird typically used in falconry, but I'd love to learn more about the northern harrier. If you have the time and feel comfortable enough with your knowledge of them, I'd love to see a you do a video on them. Thanks for the informative and entertaining videos. Being cooped up for the last couple of weeks, I'm finding them even more valuable than I did in the past. 👍👍
@benwoodrufffalconry4 жыл бұрын
StoneE4 actually, I have hunted canal ducks with them before. I have flown a male and two females. They aren’t good falconry birds, but they can do it. People always mock the idea. And yet in New Zealand the only raptor they can hunt with is harriers! Let me think on the best way to go about it and maybe I’ll make a video. A lot of haters will rip on it, but it is still fascinating. Thank for the great suggestion!
@StoneE44 жыл бұрын
@@benwoodrufffalconry - Maybe this is a myth, but I've read that there was a time when a lot of people mocked the idea of hunting with a harris hawk. 🤷♂️ If you decide not to do a video on the harrier maybe you could do a general video on what makes some birds worse than others for falconry. The harrier has always fascinated me by the way they hover with, what appears to be, such little effort. They remind me of big, owl-faced hummingbirds with talons. 😄 Anyway, thanks for the consideration.

Since female Gyrfalcons are larger and heavier than a female Red Tailed Hawk I've wondered why Red Tails so often attack them and steal their kill and even kill the gyr. This seems to happen with both trained birds and those in the wild! I would think the Red Tail hawk would be afraid of another raptor this large and formidable.

A simple (?) Question: how many raptors have you 'owned', in those years, and how many, of which types, do you keep/work with, today? You seem to love something about *most* of them, but seem passionate about several...

I wonder if the water thing is like with humans. Cold water in your face creates a biological response where your system uses less oxygen (as I recall blood vessels constrict so that less volume travels per second), it’s a natural response to prevent drowning but also does calm people down. Maybe hawks have something similar in their feet?
@benwoodrufffalconry4 жыл бұрын
Braden Scott I hadn’t thought of that. That could very well be. That’s an awesome theory
@mrmurphypiers12414 жыл бұрын
Falcons being sprayed or even soaked during the manning process puts them into a trance same way it calms down Race horses. A falcon will sit for hours with its wings open drying itself and preening “Putting itself back together”. I’ve never seen a wet falcon “Bate” from the block. Duck legs with the meat stripped off work wonders and keep him busy for hours and give him mental stimulation and keeps the mandible worn down also builds up muscle in the legs and neck. Put your stripped off duck legs on the block first then bring your falcon from the mews to the block tied to the glove take your time never let the falcon see you bring him food or he will start screaming. When a falcon is wet on the block is also a good time to walk around him with the dog and get him used to everything taking advantage of this window.

The Gery falco is that it does not move, it settles in a place and takes it like a lion, and if a peregrine falcon or any falcon enters its area, it eats it. I have two falcons that have eaten, but when you move it, you feel that you are transporting a real falcon.
