The only way it did not make sense is if you have the power of hindsight. Cousins was (at the time) the best FA QB. They did not know if they would get QB they liked in the draft. All those "smart" fans that said the Penix pick was stupid are now being silent or now are complaining about Kirk being too much money.

Cousins signed a 4yr 180m deal. Its 27.5m guaranteed next season. His salary if he is on the team averages 45m.

I’ll admit, Kirk Cousins might be the smartest quarterback ever. After all he’s been paid 300 mil and he’s won one - ONE! - playoff game. Why, I haven’t seen such Highway or railway robbery since “The Sting.”

There really is no reason to not keep Kirk this year. He is going to get that money any way you look at it. If we keep him he has a wealth of knowledge he can pass on to Penix. I mean no matter what he is going to get at least that $40m, you may as well keep him until next season and then move on.

Depends on their needs. If the Falcons foot some of the bill it would be foolish not to take him. He will be healthier and a cheap veteran starter.
