I agree - Nova coat. I think the modern silhouette would pair better with your fabric. I think the Simplicity pattern with the fabric would lose the modernity.

I would make the Simplicity pattern but with the length of the Nova coat. I think the collar just makes it more put together 🤗 Love all your projects and colour combos! 😍

Oh good suggestion! They would certainly make a nice lightweight jacket. Thanks for watching!

I watched your Ilford jacket vlog before watching this one. If you have plenty of the upholstery fabric left you could make an a line mini skirt to match your jacket for a very 1960s look suit x

Omg, that is such a good idea! You are right, I have absolutely tons of fabric left! I was thinking of making another jacket but really who needs two floral jackets 🤣 your idea is great! 😊

Nova coat! The large flowers suit the boxy design as they will not be as “broken up” by collar and set in sleeves.

I think the Simplicity coat pattern would work well with the floral fabric. I really like the idea of the sleeveless waist coat with the green plaid. I can't wait to see the chartreuse trousers. That's a perfect pattern for that fabric. Perfect pattern choice for the brown fabric. As far as the floral cotton poplin, I feel the first pattern and the vintage pattern would work best for those fabrics. Happy Stitching!

Only since you asked: Either of those coat patterns would work nicely for the floral brocade. It'll be fab. I prefer the Nova although I might round off the collar tips, I'm not sure the square points would lay nicely. The waistcoat. Have you seen some of the long vests that Trinny uses? She's the layering queen. Years ago when she was strictly about clothing styling she wore some long gilets with tall slits up the side seams. The slits made all the difference because they broke up the tall rectangular block shape, were less restrictive for walking, and introduced interesting peeks at the bottom layers. She often showed a long vest under a harmoniously colored long coat. The effect was a cool set of vertical columns: the blouse/turtleneck, the vest, and the coat. Beautiful, modern, and easy to switch up. Poplin. Have you been following Sewing and the City, Christine Lindebek? She creates chic modern dress patterns which look clean in solid fabric and completely different in her cool vintage fabrics. You might really enjoy her work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4HSn6iHrKunipY

Wow, thank you so much for such a helpful comment! I definitely agree about the slits in the waistcoat, although I'll have to see if I'm brave enough to alter the pattern! And I have to check out the channel you recommended. Thanks so much! 😊
@Lighthouse1852 Жыл бұрын
Trinny www.youtube.com/@TrinnyLondon/videos was one of the co-hosts of the original British show What Not To Wear which was copied here in the US later. 6-7 years ago she started a clothing stylist and skincare channel on KZbin. Her advice is size, color, age and income inclusive, although leans toward middle age. After a while she started up her own beauty product line, which unfortunately takes time away from the clothes styling content but I get it. You'll see she's is a big booster of women undergoing life changes, and female entrepreneurs in particular. On gilets and coats, I'll bet you could find examples using her channel search button. "Layering"? maybe. She often talks about the ideal placement of a coat waist button, shoulder shape, back shapes, hem, how to choose - which is terrific for any sewist to know since we can alter our patterns! Closet Confessions are my favorite type of episod. Also fascinating discussions about colors. Hope you find something thought provoking there. @@MadeByMelm

Thanks for sharing and I hope that you have the time of your life sewing this fall. I plan on some black cargo pants made from a stretch cotton blend twill. I found beige with black and red stripes knit fabric and will make a boatneck top with 3/4 sleeves. Most of my newer stuff, I bought because I've been very sick for almost two years. Some from thrift and some from Walmart and Amazon. Once I get up and moving around then my weight will even out and more importantly I will be back in shape. I bought a black wool blend skirt and two wool blend vests. I plan on making an Edwardian wingtip collar shirt in beige to wear with my usual clothes. I blend period and modern clothing and enjoy myself.

@@MadeByMelm I'm on the mend and am starting to walk again. It will be another two years until I can work again but I'm getting there. In the past two years, I had five very close calls with death. The doctors cannot explain how I got through it and then go on the mend, as folks with only 10% of my illnesses die. So I'm lucky. I miss in person interaction but online is doing OK. In a town of 40,000, I'm the only one who sews clothes consistently.

So cool you have vintage butterick pictures on your wall. Where did you get those?
@MadeByMelm Жыл бұрын
Thank you! They are vintage Butterick magazine covers from the 1930s/1940s. I spent some time on the internet looking for pictures of vintage sewing magazines or patterns I liked, I digitally enhanced them, and then got them printed large-scale at my local photo shop! It wasn't too hard and I love how they turned out!

Just watched your Fall plans. Anxious to see your lovely fabrics sewn up. I do have a quick question: I am looking for a cropped button shirt pattern, exactly like the blouse you have on in the video. May I ask if you made this, and if so, what pattern this is? Thanks so much. 🥰
@MadeByMelm Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! I didn't make the shirt I'm wearing (thrifted it recently), but similar patterns that come to mind are the Helen's closet Cameron button up OR Helen's closet Dawson top (this has a double-notched collar though), or the Fabrics-Store Noa shirt pattern (free! - you'd have to shorten the sleeves though). I haven't tried any of these yet so I can't personally recommend, but I've heard the Helen's closet patterns are well-drafted with good instructions! My shirt is made out of a silk, so you could probably get a similar effect with silk, rayon, viscose, etc 😊

I made the simplicity 8797 coat, and it was huuuuuuge on me. I love wearing oversized clothes but this was just way too much. I made the size based on my measurements. Next time I will size down two sizes I think I’ve also made mc call’s 8420, and I love the sweater, but next time I’ll adjust the pattern slightly so that there aren’t exposed seams on the inside of the placket I love all of your ideas! I’m subscribing to you now!

The Simplicity coat appears to have a seem down the front, which could disrupt the orange flower pattern. It's a rad fabric.

How do you work with the rib knit? I have tried working with rib knit and every time the garment « grows » on me and ends up being too large (even on tried and true patterns that fit me when made in a more stable knit).
@MadeByMelm Жыл бұрын
Good question - I am still figuring this out as well. This time around, I ironed the fabric first (on low) to sort of pre-stretch it a bit before cutting out my pieces. I am also sewing a smaller size keeping in mind the stretch. I am planning to pay around with stabilizing my seams with a knit interfacing as well, to help avoid them stretching out. I will let you know in a future video if that works out!
