It's funny, but here in Florida, where these Red Maples (Acer Rubrum) are native and plentiful, a lot of local bonsai enthusiast think this tree is not worth the effort and is often met with derision. I'm glad I'm not one of them. I think they make great specimen and forest plantings. This planting proves it. I live right next to a state preserve where these are plentiful and I come across seedlings in my yard all the time. I've collected a few that are now in a 9 tree forest planting that 4 years later, is coming along nicely. Thank you for posting this.

The leaves don't reduce well for use in bonsai. To keep them in scale they need to be large bonsai.

@@dk2614 yeah I mess around with Norway maples a lot, so I’m used to it. It’s a step in the right direction, comparatively!

I fell in love with bonsai at the end of last year. I found a Sweetgum (Liquidambar) seedling growing in a garden bed in my high school. It died over the winter because I collected it in the wrong time of year, but in spring of this year I started again and with much more success. I planted plum cuttings, a Boxelder Maple cutting, Gray Pine seeds, a White Alder seed, Valley Oak acorn, and over the summer they exceeded my expectations! I may be in my teens, but I am already having a big vision for the future of my spare time! My inspiration is the youtube channel, "The Bonsai Zone" by Nigel Saunders.

Welcome back to KZbin, Jonas. You took an 11 year break. Posting videos here can help beginners and intermediates alike get clear instruction in this new era of content. I read in a new study today that most young people use KZbin as their main source of content now so this is a good way to bring in some viewers and drop some knowledge to new bonsai enthusiasts. I'm about 18 months into my bonsai journey at 45 years of age so I still have a lot to learn and not a whole lot of time to learn it. I will say this about your videos so far, including the sekka hinoki video you posted recently as well, (I hope you don't take offense to this because I genuinely mean it with the utmost respect and positivity) you have a quality that is one part Bob Ross and one part Mister Rogers that is quite pleasant to watch. Your voice is soothing, you style is concise and easy to understand. Thanks for posting, and I hope you continue to bring new content in the coming years.

hey! I love maples very much and I'm loving this project, I'm going out of my way to give you some opinions on how I would proceed: you should do a job of repositioning the trunks (very carefully, perhaps helping yourself with an iron bar and some thick guy wires and tension wires if needed): some appear too straight while others are intersected and do not follow an overall flow. The low branch on the right (looking at the video) leaps too far forward and also follows a counter-flow trend: saw it off mercilessly! On the right there are no low branches to give triangularity to the whole: if you notice the branching on that side starts from very high up, you would give it much more appeal by putting a nice thick low branch in that position. Speaking about the two slingshot plants (you pointed it out too) you should prune hard, forcing the plants to bud. I advise you to do this at the vegetative restart and after fertilizing with a liquid starter. the remaining plants do not have major defects, if I were you I would also develop some low back branches near the base to give triangularity to the back too. if you notice in the video when you turn the plant, the composition is a little flat from the lateral perspective and the plant falls too far forward, having the low branches on the back you also creates the right balance for the side view and back view of the plant. Broad-leaved trees take on much more character when they have low, thick primary branches ;) Good luck!

Thanks for the tips - I appreciate it! I expect I'll make a number of these changes down the road once the trunks are in the final position and rooted in better.

Nice video, I need to prune my Red Maple actually... it's a lovely tree and so are yours. Subscribed for future videos :)
@victortaboada205811 ай бұрын
Thank you Jonas. Aren't you hesitant to tear leaves like that for feat to rip the latent buds at the base of the petioles? Also, no sealant on any of the wounds?
@JonasDupuich11 ай бұрын
Thanks! The buds on red maples are pretty small at this point and I was checking along the way to make sure they were OK. And good catch about the sealant - I applied cut paste before I put the tree back on the bench.

Just wondering, do you really have to pluck all the leaves or can you wait for them to naturally fall off before pruning?
@JonasDupuich11 ай бұрын
Sometimes it's too late if you wait for all of the leaves to drop as the tree will have gone fully dormant by then. Plus you can keep the garden clean if you remove most of them at the same time!
