I love watching your videos. I've gardened and preserved since i was a small child with my grandparents (both sides, my parents; so much fun. I grew up as the oldest of 8 children. Never a dull moment. I loved it. Being the oldest means much work and responsibility but it made me who i am. You have beautiful children and i love seeing them help and learn. You are a great mom.

Our son passed last week, after a 10+ day long battle after an incident. My garden keeps producing even without me there, along with the weeds and everything else. I find comfort and solace in the time I did/do have out in the garden, it is my happy place! the weeds will wait until I have time to deal with them, the plants keep producing now matter what!

So true! The garden is a jungle this time of year and the intense humidity makes it less 'fun' to go into the garden. This is the time of year where my relaxing fun hobby starts to give me some stress. I question what to do with 'too much' cucumber and zucchini because I hate waste. I take a deep breath and keep going (like every other gardener) but I totally get the overwhelmed feeling.

I'm with your boys -- I love garlic. Very rarely can you have too much garlic. Especially when you're Italian like me. I have to be careful how much I eat at once because it is high FODMAP and I'm very sensitive to high FODMAP foods. But I couldn't live without my garlic bread. Life would be very sad without garlic bread. If you wouldn't mind, maybe give us updates now and then on Mr. Caterpillar's big transition.

My husband planted 6 cucumbers😩There’s only 3 of us & my son doesn’t eat fresh or dill cucumbers, just bread & butter. I’m SO tired of cucumber processing. I make really good garlic dills, all the guys he works with loves them. So, at least they’re getting eaten. Just picked up a bushel of beets(I don’t have space to grow that many, but have succession plantings planted) my mom always tells me I could “name my price” to pickle them for her! 😂I’ve got the jars, lids, sugar & vinegar it’s just a lot of work canning beets. Hard on my bad back & arthritic fingers, but worth it!

This confirms the need for my new idea of being a Homestead Food Preservationist. I want to live on a homestead in a super tiny home (or RV), and be responsible for the daily harvesting and preserving on a homestead. This allows the family to get ready for school year, while I do all the veggie cleaning & prepping, canning & dehydrating, sealing, packaging & labeling. In exchange: having the living experience on a homestead for a month and a very small portion of the food preserved. Win win for everyone! Of course Three Rivers Homestead would be my first choice! 😉

Why don’t you consider waiting until after Labor Day to start school? We homeschooled through graduation and started every year after Labor Day and finished by Memorial Day. The set dates gave us both definition and something to look forward to. Our summers were really busy and this way we were able to scheduled between those holidays. We all have to do what works best in our own homes, but I thought I would suggest it.

With my husbands illness and sadly his death my garden has been a big neglected this summer but I am for the first time growing the hugest Roma tomatoes called Amish Paste. I have never been able to grow Roma's but this year they are not only growing but very large. My heart is not in to canning right now so I've been using them and sharing with my neighbors. I planted thornless raspberries and blackberries and they are growing huge vines I need to go buy some trellis's for them to get them under control. Your garden looks stunning Jessica. Anna In Ohio

One of the advantages of living in Southern California, is, that we grow food all year round. That means, that I don’t end up doing all of my food preservation once a year. For me it spreads out over the year. During summer times, I preserve a lot of fruit, berries, tomatoes, peppers and warm weather crops, and during winter root vegetables, brassicas, celery, spinach and other cold weather crops. It’s nice to be able to spread things out this way, and a lot less stressful.

Oh the awful pole bean/bush bean mistake. I did the same thing this year but on a much smaller scale. I feel bad for you. I don't do a big garden in summer here, but we have a very long growing season that accommodates the things I eat most. So I do a lot of experimenting, and use this time to eat down the freezer, do the pantry challenge, use the earliest morning to inventory garage freezer, plan a lot, start stuff for the fall/winter/early spring etc. Well, one of the experiments this year is learning to use my Greenstalk. I planted the whole thing with bush beans only to discover that to my horror the entire bottom ring was pole beans, ones that grow very tall and very strong. They were all flopped over and laying on the patio. So last night in the cool and the moonlight, I rigged up a tomato trellis that can hopefully keep them up off the patio floor. Even with the shade cloth up, the concrete reaches 135°. I needed those beans up off that concrete. It was just beautiful working out there. I did not want to come in. Now to see if it works. I feel for those of you with the heat this year. We're hot, but just normal summer hot mostly. Maybe we're being rewarded for enduring all the fires and smoke and horrific heat these past few years.

That lasted until January when I started getting ready to start seeds. I seem to can a lot of meat during the winter. When that is mostly over, I start thinking happy thoughts about my garden again.

Southeastern Ohio here! This year is the first time my younger son put out his first garden, he started everything in the house, and planted them directly in garden without hardening them off first😅 all of his watermelon died, all cucumbers right off got powdery mildew, ended up with only one sad plant, got 3 cucumbers. zucchini was attacked by the beetles, but I was able to treat with vinegar and got quite a bit zucchini, canned, mock pineapple, grandkids liked it! yay, getting green peppers now, and pumpkin were doing really well, but one plant wilted overnight! corn coming along. Not too bad for his first time, he waters his garden in middle of the night.😮 Thank you for teaching others how to do everything that your family does!

You can help yourself with the (well earned) panic and fear response to buzzing by doing desensitizing therapy. I learned this from a therapist when I was battling head lice with my daughter. My panic attacks started when I was asleep! I would waken feeling scared out of my wits and told the doctor I couldn’t have been any more terrified if I had been attacked by a stranger with a knife! She said I was holding a phobia (from a forgotten childhood event of chicken lice getting in me while plucking chickens) so tightly controlled that it could only surface while I slept. The therapist used repetitive sounds of a loud clock ticking I was listening to & achieve in a relaxed state of mind and calm body. Then I let a little thought (about those practically invisible) insects on my babies. With his guidance, listening to his voice to regain a calmness and relax again. A few sessions with him and I was able to continue the practice on my own. It wasn’t fun but it did help immensely. You could do that with recorded bussing if a calm hive. Low volume and short duration, gradually increasing volume to bring a sense of them getting closer and practicing self calming thoughts. God bless you and yours with peace.

It's been a great harvest for us this year in SE Oklahoma! Canning every day and into the night. It was such a busy season like you said... but the end was sweet to see all that it brought us! Besides peppers and okra our summer garden is done. It's a dry spell here, so a fall garden is on hold for a few more weeks. Many hands do make light work...and such a joy to have the season of children around you.

I was fortunate that my 3 sons and I were able to get together for 2 days. We all had almost a full travel day to get there. So for me, I was gone 4 days total. Good grief, when I got back home, the weeds were almost as tall as my plants. We have had rain and sun here so everything is growing like a jungle. I have ended up pulling weeds right after it rains, easier to pull out of mud. Anyway, my garden is not pretty but is producing. That is the whole point, so I'm happy.

I used to not save my onion either until I read about putting the cut portion in a canning jar with a lid & putting it in the fridge that way. It keeps the smell from invading the entire fridge & the onion seemed to stay good. Our kale is under fire from the cabbage moths but Im hoping that will subside over time as we don't use pesticides either. We pick them off but they are so numerous. Your onions looked great! We use the biggest heads of garlic that we harvest this year to replant next year's crop and that's worked really well for us. Blessings to you as you continue your harvesting & preserving!

Jessica, I had the same problem with my beans being mislabeled last year. I left them. They will vine onto each other and all you have to do is lift up the leaves and all the beans grow under just like a bush beans. I almost prefer it actually because I feel like I harvested more green beans that year than ever before! I grew them this year on a trellis and I don't feel like my harvest is as plentiful yet. It also protected my ground and acted as a beautiful ground cover and that side of the garden had no weeds last year. It was beautiful. I was talking with my neighbor (we both have large gardens as well) and we laughed how this time of year we just feel overwhelmed by the weeds and stop fighting it. I weed directly around my plants so they don't suffer too much but I just cant afford the time to weed as much in some areas as I need to. This time of year Im trying to preserve everything so it doesn't go bad and thats a full time job as we know. Im reminded now why I sometimes look forward to October when most of my garden is being put to bed and Im slowing down in preserving and finally taking some breaks. But it's all worth it in the end when we're eating off our harvest in the winter.

I want to preserve our tomatoes but here in the UK, canning doesn't seem to be a thing anyone does. Maybe I have that wrong. I freeze what I can, but I'd much prefer to can, store at room temp. I can't access any fancy equipment but I can get hold of Kilner jars and similar. There must be a way to get going with this, so I'll keep searching! Thanks for all the wonderful videos and content. I'd love a small holding, but outside of Wales, it's not possible in England, unless you have £1 million or soto buy land (land is at a premium, mostly because of housing developers who easily outbid). God knows though!! Planting everything we possibly can in our little garden!

Your garden story reminds me so much of my career days. Our family business was 60 miles away and we averaged 60 hour weeks. The garden was so prolific, including the weeds. 😊 I stayed with the traditional long rows in the half-acre garden. I finally succumbed to the weed-wacker to keep control between the rows. In the veggie rows, I had heavily mulched with grass clippings early in the season. Otherwise, I don't think I would have survived. 😇 I'm looking forward to being inspired by your August challenge. 🙂

Garden looks great! This year I had the same issue with what I thought were bush beans, and then they started wanting to climb. I put in a trellis where I had not planned on having one and then these plants only grew about 2 feet up it, not really Vining and climbing. So after all these years of gardening, I’m learning that there is a hybrid form of been that’s in between a bush and a pole . I wonder if that will be the case for yours too.

Your carrots are beautiful! What do you add to your soil to get them to true so nicely? What variety?

Hi Jessica! Wonderful harvests! I love the raised bed method. I didn't get any onions in this year. When I chop onion, I chop the whole thing, and put the leftover into the freezer. The next time I need half an onion, I grab that container. Last year we had a huge harvest so I carmelized some and froze them. I am wondering if it would work to freeze dry the carmelized. It is just two of us now so when I freeze, I use jars, and love grabbing a jar of those. That would probably not be a route for you unless you could dedicate a freezer! we have also found that once we freeze the chopped garlic and onion etc, we don't get that "after feeling". I love the kitchen refer/fridge for this stuff. I freeze everything grated carrot is so great to grab on a busier day. So happy your body is healing, our mind and spirit take longer but you already know that. 💞🌏

I planted pole beans with Provider beans(which I thought were pole beans) & they didn’t flower. I fertilized them well & the Provider beans are amazing right beside them. I pulled both successions bc they were in for months, all vine, no flowers.

There have been a ton of seed mixups this year! I had at least 3 different kinds of beans in 1 pack. No idea what went on with the seed companies, but many people got the wrong seeds this year.
