The TVRM's Hiwassee Loop Excursion Train travels the loop on Nov. 2, 2016. Autumn's colors are in peak on a very warm afternoon. Pulling 5 passenger cars of various vintage is locomotive GATX 2004...an EMD GP38.
A total of 4 cameras were used for filming in an attempt to help viewers get a comprehensive feel for what it is like to see a train pull the spiral loop up Bald Mountain.
This video is only a shadow of what heavy rail traffic used to look like on the loop. When the L&N and later CSX Transportation operated over the Hiwassee Loop it was common for trains to be so long that the locomotives would be on top of the trestle while the rear of the train was still underneath the trestle...but sadly there seems to be no video of this part of the loop's history...only a few photos. The lack of video is due to the Hiwassee Loop's remote location and the fact that heavy rail traffic had ceased by the time digital video was common.
I hope you enjoy.
