I think with time we'll look a lot kinder upon Mania, hell I already do, Hold Me Tight Or Don't, Wilson, Church, Bishops Knife Trick with the benefit of time have grown to be some of my favorite songs they've ever done I see what they were trying to do, I just think if we had another 1-2 months before release Mania could have been something great

As a Fall Out Boy fan (im about to get roasted) I agreed with your statement about how they released 5 tracks for a 10 song album!!! Wilson was actually the one they played live, so its 5 not 6, but they only should've released 3 songs. I'm a fan of this album, although I can agree Champion and Young and Menace are dark spots. Personally, I actually enjoyed quite a bit of the album, except on tracks like Sunshine Riptide and Young and Menace, the experimentation didn't sound too bad to me. Patrick shines vocally on this record, I really like the smooth quality of his voice on songs like Heaven's Gate and Hold Me Tight, I've been missing that soulfulness from him. However, I do agree that lyrically this album is very awkward and sonically it's not very cohesive, but at least for me I do like a lot of the songs individually. I'd give it a solid 3-3.5, but I really enjoyed your review Jon, it gave me another perspective on the album. Hopefully the fandom doesn't crucify you too much, sigh.

interesting, I really enjoyed this album personally? The lack of direction is something that kinda makes the album to me, I feel it fits the topic and fulfills its purpose that way. And after listening twice, Heaven's Gate might be my favourite so unfortunately I really struggle to see eye-to-eye with you on that. I appreciate what they're doing here and it might even be my second favourite fob album after ioh, I really really like the lyrics even if I can admit that they are repetitive but I kinda don't mind that. As for track listing: iTunes messed it up, so the digital listing will be changed in time. I see where you're coming from a lot of the time but oddly, I feel differently about the points you make myself, however, I do appreciate this review. Gotta be honest, I've not watched your stuff in a while because it just strayed too far from the kind of content I was looking for and after seeing your first tweet, I was afraid this review would frustrate me more than anything, but I do think this is a decent video, I feel like you actually put a lot of thought into it, too, and whilst I don't necessarily agree with you, I can appreciate what you're saying this time, where recently I've often struggled to empathize in any way.

I'll be honest. I grew out of FOB. It was a surprise to me when I saw they uploaded a new music video and it was for Young and Menace. I cried after listening to it because I was wondering what happened to the band that got me into rock. I don't know if I'll listen to the whole album, but from the songs I have heard, I enjoy Wilson and Last of the Real Ones. Wilson made me think of AB/AP and personally I thought it could have been a B-side song to it, idk. Last of the Real Ones was catchy. Again, idk if I'll listen to the whole album. But yeah their songs have kinda been going downhill, for me.
@spark300c6 жыл бұрын
well because how small pop chart are. there little room for diversity so real up beat rock bend pushed back. another problem you not suppose to grow out of it. they now have to reach new group fans who do not have know what real rock sound like.
@fullmetalval63806 жыл бұрын
spark300c It's trends though. Right now trap/rap is dominating stuff, of course it's gonna be hard for rock. Look at the 2000s and earlier years, it was a good mix. Also, you can't just "not grow out of it". That's just not possible. Fans will eventually find them. Could be because the first thing they hear is their old sound, or because of their newer sound. Eventually the people who heard the new sound are gonna wanna check out their discography.

I think this is a very fair review, as a long time fall out boy fan myself I do agree with many of your points made. Imo I think they are trying to find a new sound and figure out where they want to go next because they are getting older and this is like a new chapter and I feel like on that journey there is bound to be a hiccup or bump in the road until they figure it out. And i think in a way they put out this record as sort of an experiment to try out a multitude of things almost playing a trust exercise with their fanbase. I think this was a solid effort and there are some songs I do enjoy and I look forward to where they land next.

This might be the first Fall Out Boy album that I don't buy. I'll listen to it when it's released but I wasn't impressed by the singles. I wish they'd go back to their 00s days but that will never happen. I hate it when rock bands go poppy and mainstream and they sound generic. Also, doing some research on Wikipedia, there is apparently 2 different tracklistings. One for the digital edition and one for the physical edition. That makes no sense to me!

@ThatOneGuy75506 жыл бұрын
Mixed feelings to this, Jon hits on most the points on this great, and fair review. But this album is a turning point, I think they are trying to embrace current trends within pop music, while I still think Pete Wentz is a good songwriter, this album doesn't have the same strength their past records had. Instead, it's taking a left field and like Jon said, "trying to embrace too many different sounds at once" (paraphrasing), FOB isn't washed up, but this album is giving me the impression, they have sold out, or at least, not as trying hard to give us better material, instead embracing pop trends, and radio-friendly "pop rock" sounds. I deeply encourage any FOB fans to Andy Hurley's hardcore band, SECT, with their new album, NO CURE FOR DEATH. His drumming is insane, and not wasted on this album. Props to Jon for a great, and again, FAIR review!

Amazing review. You're spot on with the lyric repetition: it is the worse aspect of the album for me. Everyone talks about how they change their sound and everything, but up until now, even with those changes, the lyrics were always great. I grew up listening to all of those songs and these lyrics means so much to me even today. MANIA feels lazy, rushed and repetitive to say the least. I'm not sure if they're trying something with it or if it's lack of inspiration, but almost every song is an example of it. I'm also with you: my favorites are Wilson and Last of the Real Ones. Hold Me Tight or Don't is growing on me too.

I really can't get into this release... even the good songs don't really compare to the good songs off of their last one. Even though I like some of the stuff that came after it just fine, Folie was just such a good album in its entirety that I have trouble understanding why they didn't move forward after that album in its direction. I get they want to experiment, but it's causing them to not make good albums as a whole in my opinion. I do really love this band, but man, I don't understand what happened here on this album. If other people like it, that's totally fine. But there's not more than 2 or 3 I'm gonna keep off of it, to be honest. I don't think I dislike this album as much as a lot of people do, but I don't listen to it a lot, and it doesn't have have that same kind of magic that fobs other albums made me feel. I don't like young and menace (oof I didn't spell that right oh well) but I really like Wilson, hold me tight or don't, stay frosty royal milk tea, bishops knife trick, and the last if the real ones. Everything else though, it's just kinda meh to me. I hope that fob will make better stuff in the future.

Maaaaannn.... This album ended up really growing on me. Not my favourite by any means, in fact, I'd still probably put it at the very bottom... but I don't know, I can't explain it. I keep coming back to it and enjoy it a bit more each time.

I hate to say it but I think fall out boy is just done. They were great on every album before the hiatus but ever since Save Rock and Roll, the quality in music has declined in quality so much that I can’t stand to listen to anything other than Expensive Mistakes. They feel like an entirely new band now. If they weren’t popular back then, and were a brand new, upcoming band, there’s no way that anything released in the past few years would be successes. The only reason they find success now is because of the fans.

I definitely agree with the whole repetition of the lyrics. One of the best parts about Fall Out Boy is their lyrical content and I just feel that they should have been more creative. Pete is amazing at writing lyrics so I was a bit disappointed, but so far I like the album. Can't wait to hear it and full! And I love this review :)

The entire album was just confusing. I enjoyed TLOTRO, Hold Me Tight Or Don't, and Stay Frosty, but Sunshine Riptide was strange and didn't fit, Young and Menace was a disgrace to music and Champion was repetitive and quite boring. I doubt I'll come back to over half of these songs, even though I am pleasantly surprised with how "good" the album was, since Y&M set the bar incredibly low.
@OliveAmanita26826 жыл бұрын
Young & Menace was pretty good (took a while to get used to, though), and M A N I A is easily my favourite Fall Out Boy album yet. I do agree Sunshine Riptide was a pretty lackluster. Still, great review though, even if I don't necessarily agree with it.

@@RebornLegacy since 2010. I didn't say its the best. That title probably goes to Folie a Deux or Cork Tree. Said my favourite. Just like how Black Parade is best MCR album but Danger Days is still my favourite.

Patrick said he didn't expect this album to be played on the radio, and it's VERY expiremental, very similar to folie same being he is very proud of it. I personally love this album, but this is a thorough review and I respect your opinion

Not gonna lie, after Hold Me Tight or Don't (I like the song BTW), I stopped looking at the album on Amazon Music, and when I saw the music video for Wilson (Expensive Mistakes), I honestly thought it was an ad for some stupid shit like that Champion Fidget Spinner they made, so I stayed clear of it. Only after watching this review (and looking in the description of this video) did I realize it's an actual song... Whoops, because the song is pretty dope. Other than the two singles I mentioned above, I don't really like the singles they released. Nonetheless, I'm still going to give the album to try (since I tend to like a lot of albums others hate, like Maroon 5's Red Pill Blues, Linkin Park's One More Light, and Julia Michaels' Nervous System), but I feel like I won't enjoy the album.

Panic at the disco and fall out boy got me into rock. Both of them switched to pop, and panic at the disco succeeded. I still listen to their music from time to time, because they did pop WELL. Fall out boy, however, just decided to make crappy generic EDM and pop-rock that does nothing to distinguish itself. It’s really sad, considering that fall out boy used to be so amazing.

I came here expecting a full on explosive review about how bad it is but I'll give you credit mate, its a good review! HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON'T, The Last Of The Real Ones & Bishop's Knife Trick are my Favourites.

Anthony Alesiani not trying to be rude but can you explain why you like hold me tight because I thought it was the worst single from the album , the verses are good and it builds pretty well but I feel like the chorus really falls flat

Thoroughly enjoyed this review. I'm an absolute die hard fan of FOB, but the strongest post hiatus release was definitely Save Rock and Roll. Sunshine Riptide is actually a highlight for me BUT, I completely agree with the statement about the rap segment. My other issue with the rapping is that I can't understand a word that he's saying and I know it's a running joke that Patrick's pronunciation can be wobbly at best, but at this point in the game it's very frustrating when you can't understand what someone is saying. The Last of The Real Ones in my opinion, is the best song on this album. Clear direction, perfect use of timbre thay fits with the feeling of the lyrics. I'm not going to say that I love this album, I enjoy it but it definitely ranks lower than any other FOB album. People compared it to Folie but there's no comparison. Folie had direction, atmosphere, charisma. Mania unfortunately, feels like the tidbits from Pete's grocery list that Patrick's had to make into an album. The album isn't bad and art is subjective, I'm still proud of what they've created but I very interested to see what they pull out of the bag after this album.

Hunter Stiles I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I almost feel like with all this experimentation they might find something very very good for future albums, like some sort of balance. I think they might be able to find their balance and something to satisfy all of their fans. Personally, I like this album because I don't listen to it by itself and I also don't take it from a very serious stand point. I don't take this album as a serious work of art, which I think allows me to enjoy it a little more.
@hunterstiles96026 жыл бұрын
Marie20 Definitely! I wholeheartedly agree with you there. There is a lighter tone to this album and clearly it is something that the boys should be proud of. It's definitely an album that allows for a whole host of new fans to join in with.

for me, knowing what mania actually is and how it's associated with Bipolar disorder (which Pete Wentz actually struggles with to this day) helps me understand the craziness, extreme highs, and lows, and the general just being all over the place a lot better. Hope i dont sound like one of those wild 12 year olds everyone is talking about, but that's just what works for me and helps me appriciate and understand M A N I A as a whole. idk if that would help you or anyone else though, just a thought / suggestion i guess.
@PandaSingz6 жыл бұрын
I personally feel like the chaotic nature of the album was sort of meant to be there, but I understand why it can be polarizing and frustrating for people. I definitely agree that Young and Menace should have stayed at the beginning, it felt like an opener as a song, not to mention it was the basic introduction to this album cycle as the first single. There is plenty on here that I disagree with but I'm not gonna go point by point. Thank you for the review.

I kinda hope this album tanks so that they realize that pandering to the masses is no replacement for actual creativity, but as they say in "Folie au Deux": "They always bring up how you've changed" and "I don't care what you think, as long as it's about me".
