Very much excited every time I see a new video from you. Seems a unique window into hard aid climbing. I don't climb anymore and these bring a lot of nostalgia. Thanks for making these and good luck to you!

Another new video for my lunch break today! Never comment on videos but ive loved watching these lad! Cracking stuff and great to see some spice without it all being sensationalised with a camera team. Makes me almost psyched to drop the boots and go aid climbing. Dare i say it…

Totally get the mental exhaustion bit. Done The Nose and the tension of being on the wall all day, albeit in a much safer situation is exhausting. Having to be totally focused every waking moment, no relaxing, and in the case of hard aid waiting for pieces to rip at any moment or worse rock coming away and heading towards ropes, or falls towards ledges is telling. You never sleep so well (even though you have the ever present danger of rockfall.

Can you explain what you we're going to do with the bags? at around 24 minutes, the part when you needed a number 5.
@olivertippett22 күн бұрын
Ah yes. So with lead rope soloing, a fall can generate a lot more force on the gear since you’re being caught by a static anchor and not a belayer who gets pulled upwards. I knew this was the case, but didn’t realise the extent of it until I snapped a screamer rated to 5kN with a relatively small fall and a reasonable amount of rope in the system. So what I started doing after for pitches I thought I might fall on was hanging the bags as low as possible at the belay, then looping the end of the lead line fixed at the anchor from as high as possible, down to the bags, then back up the pitch. This meant the bags got lifted when I fell, and reduced the peak force on the gear.
@matthewjagger104422 күн бұрын
I thought so, I've watched a few of your videos and noticed you tied into the bolt rather than the bags for dynamic help. So I assume you thought about abseling back down to attach the rope to the bags. Thanks for the reply. You're killing it!!!

What is the most number of batt hooks you or most people would be comfortable with doing in a row in this kind of terrain? I have minimal experience with batt hooking
@olivertippett19 күн бұрын
I think it depends on a load of factors. With bathooks, to me it mainly depends on who drilled them, when, and if there’s something to hit if you fell. On this route, they only drilled a few 3/8” bathooks in a row before placing a good bolt, so they were never scary. On Ring of Fire, for example, they drilled entire pitches on bathooks, which I’m not sure anyone is really psyched for.

Did you tear completely through a screamer? Is that a Yates aid screamer, like the ones that blow around hard whip loads? Crazy.
@olivertippett22 күн бұрын
Yeah exactly, it was a Yates scream aid. They’re supposed to break at 5kN, which I though would have been unlikely for a fall from just above that piece with that much rope in the system but I guess the static catch on the bolts does produce a higher force. I’m not sure I’ll buy any more of them in the future but rather just get more regular screamers…
@davel75922 күн бұрын
@@olivertippett yeah, quite surprising! I wonder if a normal screamer would have held... I'll keep watching your videos to find out lol, stay safe. 😄
@Conceptualizethis21 күн бұрын
@@davel759 I believe a typically screamer is supposed to hold at least 20 kn. @howNOT2 broke one recently and after it deployed it broke around 20kn. kzbin.infoHJ7lNUeFOgk?si=_YzXrvdoNrWRUTBx
@davel75921 күн бұрын
@Conceptualizethis yep, but they also make "aid" screamers that blow around 5-7 after deployment. I guess to save your aid gear and the rock, but also make sure you're not dropping 20kn on each subsequent piece. Clever stuff.

Top stepping a bat hook, eek. Better than the risk of the expando flake blowing and chopping a rope.
@AaronRashaw22 күн бұрын
Nice to know that some hooks can hold a fall! I noticed you have one cam buckle/fifi and one cord/climbing-rope style daisy. Is that so you have an option for dynamic in the system? We always used 2 looped daisy chains w fifi hook 20 years ago. I'd like to try your system. Nice videos, thanks!
@olivertippett22 күн бұрын
That hook is actually rated to take a fall to be fair! I use 2 adjustable petzl lanyards with static 8mm cord mainly for bounce testing (and to stop me dropping my ladders). Then I use the Alfifi on pretty much every move for positioning myself. I find this much quicker than adjusting the petzl ones each move and I find it easier to top step with the alfifi.
