She loves people. I was queuing for her concert in NYC in the 90's, it was a hot summer day and we were sitting on the pavement. She came out and walked along the queue to say to everyone its very hot upstairs and to get some water to drink at the grocery shop behind the corner. I was in shock that such a legend bothered to care about her fans.

YES! she is so unlike the image most have of her. She IS all the things you mention. But she's ALSO strong as hell and fearless, not at ALL afraid to stand up against injustice or assholes. I once heard an audio clip of her ripping into Ted Nugent at a radio station, when he overstayed his interview, cutting into her appearance. She told him to "get the fuck out" and began trying to physically remove him from the room! lol You can't see it, of course, but you can hear the tussle. Ted (like ALL he-man bullies) was blown away and a total puss. It was hilarious! She's exactly what I try to exhibit--be kind, generous, and loving....until you come at me (or one I care about). Then it's fuck ALL!

Patti tells in her book "Just Kids" that she didn't dream of becoming a rock-star, she just wanted to be a poet and a writer. When Bob Dylan saw her perform live, he encouraged her to continue in music. Decades later, Bob Dylan would become the first musician to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, he couldn't come to collect it, so he appointed his friend, Patti Smith, to go in his name.

Just saw her play a couple weeks ago in Brooklyn. Crowd was borderline heckling her throughout the show but she took it all very gracefully. She was interrupted at the beginning of "Land" and got frustrated, but then she really hit her groove and the entire place shut up. Patti Smith at her best is spellbinding, I've never seen anything like it.

I saw in concert back in 2012 at Crystal Ballroom in Portland. I told myself I was going to meet her two week before the concert. She came out in the audience and came up to me and put her hand out, I got to tell her, I love her book Just Kid!. I also saw her back when she was touring with her Easter album.

Her book was recommended to me years ago by one of my idols and I have to say, it’s by far my favorite book I’ve ever read. It’s called ‘just kids’, even if you’re not a fan of her, her storytelling is incredible and it’s pretty much about music in nyc in the 70s.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out Patti Smith's Substack. It's casual like she's chatting with friends; sometimes from home, sometimes from the road. Videos, stories, photos, writings, readings, show-n-tell, old works, new projects, book talk (what's she's reading, what she's writing, books, art, and artists that were important to her throughout her life... and most often just checking in at the end of her day before retiring for the night.

Jimmy is right, she toured with Mr. Dylan and a Great tour that was! She even shot me the sneering look of Oyy one night in Philly and if you have to get "that" look from anyone, who better than Patti Smith! And I'm glad she changed her mind about poets because she performed some of her spoken word that night. Just Sublime! Ps. No, I wasn't doing anything creepy or wrong to get the look. More of what I didn't do. Pss. Also thanks to her, some very important art work in Italy was saved from being ruined forever to fade away!! Then sometime after folks around the world cried tears of joy and strength for and to her that day she sang a song for that friend of her's. God Bless that woman!
