I'm Italian and I just rewatched HIMYM and I swear every time Marshall and Lily try to talk in Italian, it cracks me up. i know my english is probably worse but I still find it incredibly hilarious, and thank God for subtitles! Lily's father's Italian was a little bit better though so bravo!

I saw HIMYM both in original and in italian dubbing, and I disagree with Jason and especially with the stupid chef who said that. Italian voice (Gianluca Iacono) of Marshall in HIMYM was very similar to Segel's real voice, and absolutely dind't make Marshall dumber than he was in original.

I'm italian and I can tell you that we have some of the best dubbers in the world, the problem is that, for some reason, How I Met Your Mother's dubbers are not so similiar to the original voices... An example: Barney Stinson's voice is given by one of our best dubber (Claudio Moneta) but he usually dubs serious characters with a very deep voice. Oh and he dubs Spongebob, really. For every italian disliker: sentite il sublime doppiaggio italiano di Scrubs e vi ricrederete sulla bravura dei nostri doppiatori.

I am Italian and I love Jason Segel, he's a very funny guy! And in this case maybe he's right: the Italian dubbing, in this case, tends to show him a little dumber, but not so much in the end. Italian dubbers (mostly the "old school" ones) are really great and are known as among the best in the world and I sincerely agree: actors with poor voice, or young actors with skills that have to be improved, are masked by the great skills of our dubbers. One example: Tom Cruise dubbed by Roberto Chevalier is, imho, incredibly better rather than Cruise own voice. Anyway, if this is true for movies, this is not for tv series. In that case, it really depends on each series, mostly because of the channel they are transmitted on. A series on primetime on a main channel is usually dubbed really good, a series that is firstly broadcast on a less followed channel usually suffer of poor dubbing. Mtv dubbing, for example, was horrible some years ago. One example of horrible dubbing: "The Big Bang Theory"... I firstly watched the pilot in Italian and I found it awful, I tried it in English and it has become one of my favorite shows! Sheldon Cooper voice is totally wrong with Italian dubbing. "HIMYM" is has a medium quality dubbing, quite good imho, but with something wrong. "Breaking Bad" has a great dubbing for me, I enjoyed all the episodes in Italian, with a couple watched with original voices just to compare. Just to resume, usually Italian dubbing is superb for movies, but for tv series it really depends show from show. Anyway, not all Italians speak as stereotyped! :) I don't recognize an Italian accent in the speech of Jason when he talked about what Italians said to him (of course, he's not Italian), but nice try though! :) The funny thing about the Italian stereotype, when you see in the movies, is that everywhere they talk like Mario (from Mario Bros.) or like Corleone, or everyone has black mustaches (pretty rare in Italy by now)! But it would not be a stereotype otherwise! :)

@@robesch88 I doppiaggi in italiano fino a qualche decennio fa erano considerati ottimi sia per il prestigio delle scuole di doppiaggio sia per il feedback positivo di personalità estere autorevoli nel loro campo (che sia cinema o tv); mi viene da pensare a Kubrick quando si sentì in obbligo di congratularsi con il doppiatore italiano di HAL in 2001 odissea nello spazio, o il successo (insolito per un doppiatore) dei vari Ferruccio Amendola, Luca Ward o Loris Loddi che hanno fatto amare al pubblico personaggi e attori storici. Fenomeni di popolarità meno consistenti in altri paesi invece, che hanno un rapporto con il mondo del doppiaggio più schivo, forse, e probabilmente anche perché dal punto di vista linguistico l'Italia è sempre stata poco istruita sulla lingua inglese (e diciamo che non è un punto così positivo però ha permesso al mondo del doppiaggio di avere più spazio a livello nazionale)

I am Italian and LOVE the show, I never thought about Marshall as a dumb character but as a very sweet (almost cheesy), naive and somehow goofy good guy. But yep I am sorry, I never get to remember Jason's name. This is the only show where all HIMYM characters appear in Italian tv, there's almost nowhere else you can find these actors so you just can't remember their real names. Except for Alyson... but I suppose nobody knows her name either. She's always been Willow to me! Btw, I also watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall (translated in Italy as: "don't dump me"), it was a crucial movie during my major breakup. And while there are a few sites similar to netflix, most of them still mostly offer dubbed shows and movies, and you'd have to subscribe to more or less all of them at the same time to get access to a wider range of tv series.

Like that, the Portuguese who know English learn how to pronounce the words correctly, so our accent doesn't become too close to Portuguese and more to English. And then comes the Spanish accent, the German accent, etc., because in your and other countries, they don't have a means of media that constantly teaches you how to pronounce the words in English. Maybe they want to preserve the language at all costs, since it's expensive to dub a show than to use subtitles.

Amy Kazama I'm not even sure if they really do prefer dubbing everything. It's just that people are used to it. There's a new "movement" of young, sort of educated people now who like to watch the original nonsynchronized versions, so it's slowly becoming a thing here, but I guess 90% of Germans, if not more, are just too lazy to start watching english movies by now... since they've been watching everything in German for decades, and naturally it's just easier to understand for them.

When he said he slept with books and they were special objects, I felt that. I remember reading the Dark Tower Series for the first time and I remember going through literal emotions the entire time. It's hard to explain to people who are dead set against reading, but it's unlike any form of media, where you at times create the images in your head. No matter how detailed the author gets, there is always a part of the story that you add to it. At least for me. His face while talking about it shows all the passion in the world.
