to explain the random 1940s music. The entire art design direction of Fallout is "what the people in the 50's thought the future was like, then lets drop a nuke on it"

Vats of Goo play over an opening cinematic talking about events leading up to The Great War. It talks about the resource shortages, Europe dissolving into nation states, the annexing of Canada, the Chinese invasion on the U.S., and then the dropping of the bombs ending the world in a matter of two hours. The Fallout universe is very grim. Maybe plays over the very first half of the intro cinematic. It’s a tv screen showing pre war ads telling people to buy war bonds and showing the annexation of Canada as it pans out into the living room of a bombed out building and then it continues to pan out into a bombed out city destroyed by the nuclear bombs.

Bit of trivia for you: They wanted to use “I don’t want to set the world on fire” by The Ink Spots but couldn’t get the license for whatever reason, so they settled with “Maybe” instead. Bethesda would later go on to use the former song for Fallout 3 and subsequent games.

I forgot how spooky a lot of Fallout 1's atmosphere is. It has some funny moments in the dialogue, but the setting is always super bleak and ominous.

If you're interested the creator of the game Tim Cain has a KZbin Channel & he made a video on why he decided have the soundtrack go in the direction it did as well as his love of Ambient music.

“Maybe” by the ink spots is played at the beginning & end of the game, at the start it plays as we see an old tv showing life before the war but as the screen pans out we see a destroyed city. It’s meant to represent a sense of nostalgia as we see what we have lost. Originally Interplay tried to get “I don’t want to set the world on fire” also by the ink spots which would have fit better but they couldn’t get the rights to it so they used another ink spots song (Bethesda managed to get the rights for it Fallout 3’s intro) but i think it still does a really good job of what they were going for.

Metallic Monks has always haunted me. The combined sounds of a fading, distant air raid siren with the glitchy tics of a geiger counter in the backing of the track really fits the themes of Fallout so perfectly.
@MannerdDesert7

Metallic Monks plays at the Lost Hills bunker which is the Main base of the Brotherhood of Steel, they’re a Paramilitary group that split off from the US military after the War, they believe mankind’s abuse of technology lead to the war & seek to preserve technology & keep out of the hands of those who would misuse it. It’s called Metallic because the Brotherhood of Steel wear hulking metal suits of Power Armor & Monks because just like how the European Monks preserved old roman texts in the dark ages the Brotherhood of Steel preserves old technology from before the war.

Fallout makes a lot of use of ambient environmental noise. The composer used sounds of the environment the player might be in, and mixed them with regular musical notes off of a synth. The idea was to create a soundtrack that doesn’t get annoying to listen to after so many hours in the game. I think they succeeded in what they were reaching for.

Fallout 1 and 2 are very interesting. The combat is kind of stilted and awkward since it’s an isometric turn-based overworld-only rpg game. The story, writing, and lore is very impressive. When they made the switch to Bethesda and first person shooter gameplay a lot changed, some things got better but some things not so much. If you ever want to be really impressed check out some of the dialogue from the final boss “The Master.” (The Villainpedia episode is really good.) You can defeat him just by talking him out of his own plan.

Nobody else has mentioned it but you’re a little close on Khans of New California, it’s the theme of a raider band (whom the song is named after). They’re pillagers who go around harassing people; so you’ve got that “wandering the desert” thing right! As for ‘Maybe’, it’s the musical backing of the very final shot of the game where the main character walks dejectedly into the wasteland alone after being exiled from his home. And the reason an older song was used because the game’s setting is based on what people thought the future would be like in the 1950s

Fallout 2 has a similar vibe (it even reuses a bunch of tracks from the first game if I recall correctly) but also features a couple of less creepy, more upbeat(ish) tracks in "Beyond The Canyon" and "My Chrysalis Highwayman". Definitely worth a listen.

Vats of Goo - plays during the intro narrated by Ron Perlman, and also in a few places in the game that had to do with the war, like the Mariposa Military Base. City of the Dead - plays in Necropolis, where the ghouls live. The ambient gives vibes that u can almost smell: poisonous air, stench of death (from the ghouls?) Khans of New California - the Khans are one of many groups of raiders. People that stuck together like bandits, to prey on others. After the world was destroyed, those who had nothing formed in tribes and small communities, and this song gives me tribal vibes. Metallic Monks - they are the Brotherhood of Steel, remnants of the military, like you said. This plays at the Brotherhood's bunker. Acolytes of the New God - plays on the Cathedral map. It's the theme of the Children of the Cathedral. Ink Spots - Maybe - plays in the intro and the ending (which is quite sad). There are almost 20 tracks in the OST. But other good ones: Fallout - Moribund World : it plays the first time you get the world map screen. You have your current location, and you can drag to see how big the map is, but everything is in black fog, undiscovered. The song sounds like you have just been dropped in an alien world, or in the middle of nowhere, and you wonder where to go? That's how I first felt, when playing and listening to it. You are a Vault Dweller and have never seen the real world before. Fallout - Industrial Junk (junktown) - inspired by Bartertown in Mad Max 3. Fallout - Radiation Storm (The Glow) - The Glow is a gigantic hole in the ground. Used to be a research facility that was nuked. Fallout - Underground Troubles (Caves) Should definitely do Fallout 2. And no they aren't horror games but the music, the graphics, the imagery, the violent over the top deaths, the claymation faces of NPCs are all very disturbing. Might be worth a try.

Creepy, alien, unsettling. This is the feeling the original Fallout purposefully conveyed. It wasn't the campy, "let's dance around to doo-wop music and fling nukes in every direction" theme park which is present in the Bethesda offerings. Your surroundings were hostile, everyone was a potential enemy, & the clock was ticking. If you didn't figure out how to save your vault in 150 days, that was it. Unlike the new games, you could quite easily fail. 90's PC game music was an interesting mix. There was limited space on a disc & game development studios weren't overfunded, so the soundtracks reflected that budget. Necessity is the mother of invention, and some rose to the challenge. Check out the soundtracks to Mechwarrior 2: A New Dawn & its expansion, Ghost Bear's Legacy. You'll get a taste of how they accomplished much with very little.

Acolytes of the New God and Flame of the Ancient World go toe to toe together, in the same area. In the former, you visit the more cult-y section of a new religion under the guidance of a certain 'Master', and as you explore the depths of the Cathedral you find the truth, a whole facility, a Vault, completely 'corrupted' by mutation, humans and animals all fused together into horrifying creatures, walls with eyes and mouths of goo reaching out for you and grabbing you, at a certain point even psychic forces entering into your mind and talking to you. Once you find the Master, once you know of its plan to unify the world under its guidance through mutation, you understand the scope of the cult, the following and how mind numbingly unsettling the whole of it is.

It’s not a horror game, don’t worry haha. It’s actually got quite a bit of whacky humour in it. It’s a dark setting but isn’t horror, except in the existential sense of the desolation and bleakness of the wasteland, and the series pretty consistent messaging about humanities flaws and destructive nature.

You did get the meaning of metallic monks right. The theme is for the brotherhood of steel, being canonically in-game the last remnants of the US army, ideologically twisted after hiding in their bunkers for so long, being very religious. So the theme fits perfectly, because they are literally, a fragment from the old world before the nukes.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the soundtrack! Mark Morgan's work for the first two Fallout games had a very specific goal in mind. Atmosphere. Outside of the Ink Spots 'Maybe' song, Fallout doesn't actually have an overall theme. It wouldn't be until Fallout 3 that Bethesda would hire Inon Zur who created a theme for Fallout that would be used in it's subsequent games and used in the TV show. Being a fan of this series since the 90s, here are my takes on two fo the tracks. Metallic Monks This track plays when the player visits the 'Botherhood of Steel' bunker. It is all about establishing the Brotherhood and what their purpose in the wasteland is and it does it with three motifs. 1. The deep chant This is meant to reflect the Brotherhood's mideval and almost religious dedication to their mission. They name their ranks in the tradition of medieval times with titles such as squire, paladin, knight and scribes. 2. Military Drums They are very militaristic as well. Everyone in the brotherhood follows a militiristic life style that answers only to their mission and not to outsiders. 3. The Air Raid Sirens The air raid sirens reflect the Brotherhood's vigilance. To them, the possibility of another Great War is always on their minds so they always remain alert. Acolytes of the New God This track is all about giving players a 'face value' approach to the 'Children of the Cathedral', In Fallout, this music plays in a location where an actual Cathedral resides that is inhabited by a bunch of religious zealots who gather to worship 'The Master' and his message of Unity. The music plays with a lot of church/cathedral/temple like sounds like loud distant bells, chants both light and heavy, but there is something else. Something not church like that plays when the chanting stops. This is the subtle note that establishes that this cathedral and it's followers are just a front for something far more sinister.

I feel like the term “post apocalyptic” (understandably) caused you to have misconceptions about the game world. Fallout, although sometimes depicting the worst of humanity, is not at all wholly nihilistic or despair ridden. Civilization is in the process rebuilding itself in the setting of fallout 1 even if the communities created are not as large and complex as they are today. In many ways Fallout is an optimistic look at humanities perseverance and its prevailing commitment to do better for itself despite its own repeated failings and traumas. This is an area that many people think its current IP holder Bethesda failed to grasp. Although there is a sizable and unforgiving wasteland between settlements, with various hooligans and mutated beasts, many locations within fallout 1 are not abandoned, but have instead been repurposed or restored, if not straight up built from the ground up as is implied with the Pueblo style homes in Shady Sands. It’s not all concrete, rust and sheet metal slums.

Fallout 1 and 2's music is mostly ambient sounds arranged into compositions, it's not "music" in the traditional sense. It might even take some notes from the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". The menu theme, "Desert Wind (The Wasteland)" Is one of the single most haunting tracks I've ever heard in... anything, let alone a video game. "The Khans of New California" is one of my favorite tracks, I also like the faction. By the time you get into Fallout 2, society is well on its way to rebuilding itself, the NCR is a major nation in the US. I'm really glad you're getting the vibe of Fallout here, so many people think it's some zany, comedic, nonsensical series but no... it was never that, it was always meant to be taken seriously, it just had some pop culture references and levity to distract from how serious the main story actually is.

The extent to which you immerse yourself in the music you listen to is EXACTLY why I watch your content. I think its interesting how much this affected you. While the music is haunting and offputting you have to remember that while playing the game you're doing things like puzzle solving, exploring, talking with survivors (sometimes about philosophy and history and the like!) and sometimes, yes, fighting or running from manmade horrors that scar the psyche. The gameplay is dynamic amd varied. You're essentially getting a heavy dose of the bleak and traumatized atmosphere and being left with no other stimulus than your imagination, which in your case is clearly substantial. I think a lot of us hear something like this and think "oh cool thats creepy and atomospheric" while you engage with it on a deeper level that explores just how frightening this king of landscape would be.
