Fallout 4 Black Screen with Audio Fix 2023

UPD. Found a solution even for those who were not helped by this video. I fixed the problem shown in the video through the mods, but I had a problem with game saves in Fallout 4. Because of this problem, I found the root of this problem in general. The fact is that my Documents folder in Windows 11 had the path "/user/OneDrive/Document/My Games/Fallout 4 " even though the path to the Documents folder DOES NOT have to be "OneDrive" for the game to work correctly . After changing the path by pressing the "Choose default path" button, it removes "OneDrive" from the path and the game starts to see both the save and the settings files, the settings of which are shown in this video. But if anything, after changing the path, in my case, the My Games folder disappeared. I still have the save in steam, but it might be important to someone else. If this also happened to you, then just go back to the game through the launcher and exit, and then do the settings shown in the video. (I apologize if I wrote something wrong. I use Google Translate☠)

This worked perfectly for a couple of weeks until the new gen update today... even after double checking if the settings were reverted back to default I could not find what went wrong, just a black screen with the game running in the background

Holy crap. I thought I was the only one. This worked and managed to play like 47hours of gametime. Then the new gen update came up. And all of a sudden Black screen but still noise in the background. Did everything like i was told to here. But everything remained the same. Im stuck and lost.

Since this fix doesnt work after the new update what u gotta do is change monitor refresh rate to 60hz in display settings and run in windowed/borderless. U can select window/borderless in the fallout 4 launcher options then itll work.

Haven't been able to play Fallout76 since the fallout show came out, I was going through steam to get to the Fallout76Prefs to change the Ipresentinterval to 0 but that still wasn't working. Seeing you go through "My Documents" to get to the Prefs file did the trick, I don't understand why that worked but the files under steam didn't but idc now lol good looks man you're a life saver

I want to thank you for this video, sir. I bought a new gaming laptop last week, installed Fallout 4, and then there was this annoying black screen. If it hadn’t been for you, I probably wouldn’t have been able to get the game working correctly. I’m beginning to see why people love Fallout: New Vegas. Part of it is because Bethesda doesn’t optimize their games right, but Obsidian does with theirs. I didn’t have to do anything after installing Fallout: New Vegas.

My solution: put my laptop screen to 60hz, launch the game in windowed/borderless, in game change screen from 60hz to 360hz. And it works. Don't forget to switch off "weapon debris" in advanced options, wich makes appear a lot of bug (the game stopped after 5 minutes in my case).

As others have pointed out, this doesn't work post "Next Gen Update" (so much for "Next Gen" but what else do we expect from Bethesda by now?). I was only able to get it to work by setting my monitor to "Dynamic" mode under advanced display settings in the Windows 11 display properties which runs the refresh rate between 240hrz and 480hrz and then running the game in Windowed Borderless mode. Between this and Bethesda still not fixing the "debris physics" crash for RTX cards, it's a total fail.

whoever is trying launch game after today's update and this doesn't work, still getting the blackscreen with audio and nothing works, just try running game and at launch select windowed mode. Worked for me...

I've tried this now three times and i reset the present and then save and close, then i reopen the file to make sure it saved. then when I try to load the game it resets it with out going in the options.

I did the fix, and it wworked great! but now with the April 25th update the issue is happening again. I went back and changed the ipresentinterval back to 0, did Nvidia portion, still no fix sadly.

My problem is that the game runs fine until the end of the storyline e.g. siding with any faction . Once the nuclear destruction of Institute or B of S the game ends with a black screen ???

Everything worked and the game opened. But for some reason when I try to add the exe.file to Nvidia control panel it tells me denied. It’s store in Xbox games not sure why it won’t let me add. So now the game opens but it’s about 400mph.

Just bought the game on sale , had this problem. This worked for me (saw the older video ) I tried at 72 and the game worked but kept closing. Turned it down to 60 and has been running stable. Also had to edit the file twice because the change didn’t save , you mentioned that could happen. Thank you very much for this video.

Important Note: If you need to update your graphics driver and happen to perform a "clean installation" it will revert your NVidia control panel setting back to default so you have to redo the NVidia Control Panel steps. Hope this helps.

This works with fallout 76 INCLUDING THE WINDOWS STORE VERSION WITHOUT UNLOCKING THE WINDOWS APPS FOLDER, though you may need to inject the line into the file under [Display].

Just worked for me, since the update it kept on resetting the .ini to have iPresentInterval=1 each launch of the game, initially I set the montior's Hz from 300 to 60Hz on my driver control panel. That didn't work but then I remembered that Windows has their own settings for it so went into Settings -> System -> Display -> Advanced Display Settings, and changed the refresh rate settings there to 60Hz as well and it worked. Anyway another reason to why the game was rushed for profits sadly, hope this helps! (windows 10)

People! I found the solution for those of us that had problems after the next gen update to get past the black screen and this fix not working. You have to return the game to the previous update and block the auto updating. After you switch to an old update the fix on this video will work fine again and also all the mods you had. To switch back to a previous update I found this handy video that guides you step by step on how to do it. I was loosing hope but today I managed to play again. Yet another confirmation, so far I've pushed it to 144 max in the control panel and the game consistently gives me about 90% of the max (mid-low 70s set at 80, mid to low 130s set for 144...) but hell I'd take 30 over black death... Much appreciated!

@@danielbaker5606 Most likely, the game still remains unoptimized for 300 Hz monitors, and with the release of Windows 11, it is also unoptimized for it 😮‍💨
