I'm assuming that the makeup for ben in in this short film was very complicated. They weren't planning on making a series and they probably either didn't want to have to put on that makeup over and over again, or they had some sort of other problem with it like maybe it was too hot or he had a reaction to it. I don't think they did it because of design though

I found out why it looks different. The makeup on Ben was actually a latex mask. It got really hot out in the desert and he didn't want to wear it anymore. So instead of a mask, they went for the makeup as it would be cooler in the 100 degree weather.
