Just a few tips for you : 1° : Turn the combat speed to maximum otherwise the game's going to become a slog later on. 2° : You can use the skill books in your inventory by changing your cursor mode with a right-click. 3° : On the map, you can just click on the points of interest on the side-bar to the right to walk there automatically instead of clicking square by square. 4° : You can scroll the screen with your mouse by going to the edge of it instead of using the arrow keys. 5° : Don't forget about the skilldex (bottom-right of the screen)! (press F1 if you want to see all the hotkeys) Good luck with the playthrough!

Jon, just a couple of tips. You don't have to run out of a town to look at your world map. You can do that from anywhere (just open your map and switch it to the world view). Also you can use your skills with just numbers on your keyboard (check them in your Skilldex). This is a quick method do initiate sneak, first aid, lockpick and all the other things. Also you can read your books, I think by holding left button on it to uncover more options to do with an item (you need to have your arrow cursor set).

Greetings, sir. I am quite excited for this play-through. You mentioned you might want some advice, so I thought, as one who started with this game and DOS-era rpg's on the whole, I'd leave some here. 1. Your build is actually rather good, except for one thing: Many of the good rifles will require more strength than you have. The manual, if I remember correctly, will show the req's for each weapon. Low strength can be worked around in several ways throughout the game. 2. Always remember to check the text box. Everyone I see go back and play this for the first time is always wondering what happened with this or that, but the text window gives you all the info you will need. There will be a light sound when something important pops up there, generally. 3. Fighting in caves or at night will result in lower chance to hit. Throwing a flare at an enemies feet will counter this to some degree. 4. The game intends for most players to graduate from small guns to energy weapons by the end, in opposition to new vegas where any tree is equally viable until the end. You can still get by with only small guns, though, though clever use of tactics. 5. Ask-about is more of a side option during dialogue. Only certain items are ask-able with certain characters. If you miss any ask-me-abouts, it wont hurt your ability to do well in the game. Some are pretty humourous, though. That's basically it. Thank you for all the excellent entertainment throughout the years. You are one of the best LP'ers out there. Cant wait for more of this series.
@zypher3577 жыл бұрын
-Oh, as for consuming books, you can right click until you get the arrow, then left click and drag down to the use item icon and release. The menu is a bit fiddly to get used to, but not too terrible, I think. Using books does, however, take time, so doing so in radiation can be an issue. -NPC's will not take your loot as payment for companionship. -The commonly accepted way to trade items with a companion is to use the steal skill on them and plant or steel items from their inventory. This will not anger them, and is better than having to barter items back and forth. -For the most part, you can take anything that isn't bolted down without angering anyone.

I've been a long time player of Fallout 1 & 2 and I have done a Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 YOLO (No healing, Permadeath, No save scumming) . Some helpful tips for you would be, The keyboard is your friend in this game. I don't know how your setup is but if your using a normal keyboard. You can press F1 to show a screen that shows what all the keyboard keys do, You will have to use skills on a lot of things in this game and they are used by either pressing keys 1-8 or clicking the Skillidex button that is right above your Map, Cha, and Pip buttons at the bottom of the screen, To enter combat you can press "A", To exit combat press "ENTER", To end your combat turn press "Space". To highlight items that you can pick up and put in your inventory hold the "Left Shift" key. The highlight key will save you so much time when trying to find stuff. Also a useful way to highlight people where you are but can't see because they are in areas of rooms or behind walls that you can't see because you are not next to them is to enter combat with a gun in your weapon slot and right-click as if you were going to shoot them but don't attack, this will highlight everyone in red like usual and this will help you find people. To use items like skill books you have to left-click until you have your arrow pointer instead of a finger pointer, then use and hold right-click and 3 options and a x will appear. The middle option which is a hand opened and palm visible will use which ever item like a stimpack or skillbook you want to use. A better way to move your screen is to use your mouse as it is smoother than using the keyboard. It is good that you installed Fallout Fixt because of the bug fixes and because it brings back children in the game which can also be killed by you. Theirs so much more I could tell you but these are just some basic things you should really know. I've been watching you since Fallout New Vegas No Kill/ Kill Everything runs you did and have never missed any Fallout videos of yours since then. Thank you Jon and please play Fallout 2 once this is over. Fallout 2 is how Fallout New Vegas is to Fallout 3 by introducing a lot more things to the game.

To be fair Jon, the NCR were quite nice people, though a bit imperialsitic. Of course with any democratically elected state, we have individuals/Presidents who cater to special interest groups (In this case, Brahmin Barons, caravan barons, and Weapons conglomerates) and they have priorities to expand their territory to expand their wealth. Numerous characters throughout Vegas mention nothing proactive gets done in the NCR senate because it essentially mirrors the modern American Senate and HOR (Suffice to say, positive or proactive things don't often come from the legislative branch).

Here's a guide to making the most powerful Fallout 1 character: Lockpick, Small Guns, Speech. Charisma down to 1. You don't need it, ever. Agility up to 10. You want all the AP. get Int and Luck up as high as you can too. Take the Gifted and either the Finesse or Fast Shot traits. Do not put skill points into any of the following: Barter, Traps, Steal, Throwing, Outdoorsman, Gambling, Sneak, Doctor, First Aid, Melee. Repair and Science are useful to get to a decent level, but not for tag skills.

Going with F3/NV build knowledge is actually a pretty good idea! CH is less of a dump now because it also determines how many party members you can have, but it's still mostly a dump - caps are a complete non-issue pretty early in, IN determines what speech choices you have and the Speech skill is what determines success (CH is just a flat bonus and doesn't have great perks). PE is also way less of a dump stat, not just because of perks but also because unlike in 3/NV you can't manually aim in first person - meaning that in effect your "VATS accuracy" is ALL accuracy, which PE has a pretty big impact on, also sequence like you noted. IN and AG are still the most important stats by far. ST requirements on weapons (even Small Guns) are pretty high, though. Power Armor gives a much larger boost in this game (and you can even get a separate bonus) so it's not too bad, though. Good Natured is indeed still quite useful for basically everyone. Small Guns is still basically the best non-gimmick weapon tag choice - useful for the entire game since they're about all you find early and aren't particularly outclassed at the end. Lockpick, Science, and Speech are useful as always. I'm not a huge fan of Skilled because I love perks, but it's not as awful a choice as some people seem to be suggesting in the comments here. Skilled + Gifted is a pretty common combo. I'd say Gifted is hands-down the best Trait, though.

Jon, in order to use things, like the Scout Handbook (and possibly the bag as well), hold right-click on the item in your inventory and then move the mouse down to one of the hand icons (can't remember which one, but be careful because one is the drop button).

Armour piercing was never properly implemented. It's supposed to do less damage but negate damage resistance. It doesn't do this. Instead, it deals less damage for no benefit. Sell the ammo, that's all it's useful for. EDIT: Actually, the ammo works identically to regular ammo. It's Fallout 2 that reduces damage for no benefit.

To "use" the scout handbook, you have to put it in the item slot (the same place you put your weapons) then you use the item on yourself. This is also how you have to heal yourself. Move a stimpack to the Item slot, then Use the stimpack on yourself or your companions. You've already noticed that accessing the inventory during combat costs AP, so healing yourself during combat is a good way to eat up your AP

Good evening, Jon. I have the answers to some of the questions you asked on the video. I've been following your RTW campaign (subbed because of it) and I'm glad to see you take a shot at this old classic. My favorite in the series (and still my favorite game of all time) is still Fallout 2, but this one is a masterpiece. Let's get to the doubts: -Regarding the bag. In short, it's useless. You could place items inside it to organize your inventory, but that's it. IIRC, the inventory system was supposed to be more involved, but the idea was scrapped before launch and the bags are what is left of that idea. They are completely absent from the second game for that very reason; -As someone else already said, you can use the books by right clicking them and holding while they are in your inventory. They are very valuable indeed. The books are the reason I never invest in first aid or outdoorsman in the old games, as it's easy enough to get by with what you get from the books. -The flares are used to light dark places. Darkness modifies your hit chance, so flares could be used to help hit things while fighting inside a cave or at night. You can also use them as thrown weapons if you really want to, the same way you can use the rocks. -I think (could be wrong here) the grenade damage is not modified by any skill. Your throwing skill only modifies your chance to hit. Blowing yourself up because your throwing sucks and the grenade fell at your feet is a real danger in this game. Other things you might have gotten wrong: -The first aid kit, for example, is used for healing hit points, like stimpacks. For healing limbs, you need to either visit a doctor or use a doctor's bag; -The dialogue system in this game is way more involved than in the Bethesda ones. Intelligence and your skills (science for example) make the options show up. From there, your charisma/speech determine if you can convince the person. So having the option is not a guarantee of convincing the person of something. Some of the hostile reception you got in Shady Sands was caused by your low charisma; -This could be just in the second game, so forgive me if I'm misrembering, but I thing the charisma stat also limits the number of companions you can have. That's what I remember from the video, but if you have any more doubts feel free to ask. It's really nice to see this game again from the perspective of someone new to it.

Just a few things: 1) MALE characters had a better ride in Fallout and F2. Especially in F2 where you could become a pornstar/donate sperm. Consider that when you do F2 ;) 2) To use a skillbook, right click and USE IT YOU GIT, YOU TALKED ABOUT HOW RIGHT-CLICKING TO CHANGE THE USE OF YOUR LEFT CLICK CHANGED THINGS 3) Companions have limited inventories, but you can sell things to and buy things from them. However, you may want to be careful, as they will only allow deals that are equally beneficial to both you and them when swapping gear. I've found myself 'selling' Ian a ton of ammo for nothing in exchange... and he typically dies in the final boss dungeon. 4) Get the Leather JACKET as soon as you can and see the dog in Junktown. Mad Max reference imminent. 5) {Redacted} 6) The 'Tell Me About' option is very fickle and there really is no way to predict what people will say or what they will react to. I suggest avoiding it entirely because it only adds some flavor text. If you have a talking head, then maybe it would be interesting to ask about key things they've mentioned (or things you know they would know about without mentioning it, like with the Super Mutants and The Master and Unity). 7) Reach the bottom of The Glow. Trust me, it has a lovely character. 8) {Redacted} 9) When you get hurt, use your Doctor/First Aid skills. It uses time, but when they succeed, they give you XP. It's a good way to level up quickly. And always use First Aid *FIRST*. It takes less time. 10) Load all your points into Small Guns. The Combat Shotgun becomes basically a Sniper Rifle with short range and you can fire right into the eyes at ~100% and do MASSIVE DAMAGE. 11) Shoot for the Eyes. All good? All good.

Got some tips for ya. 1. Aim for the eyes if you have a decent chance at hitting them, as it does massive critical damage. 2. You can transfer items to and from your companion's inventory by going to the skilldex, choosing *steal*, and left-clicking your companion. Nobody will get angry at you (unless a mod changed something). 3. To use the skill books, right click to change your cursor mode, then hold left click and pull down with the mouse to scroll through the menu that shows up, and select the *hand* icon (not the one that looks like it's dropping something). 4. Bloody Mess is fun. 5. Remember the skill book tip? The same works for stimpaks. It's useful while in combat because you can use as many as you want for only the action point cost of opening your inventory. 6. Remember what you said about criticals? That trait is more useful than you think, because criticals can do MASSIVE damage. For instance, a I once had a Desert Eagle .44 get a critical and do 170-ish damage without that trait. 7. Nothing to do with the game, but you can pronounce bullet calibers like this: .44 as fourty-four, .308 as three-oh-eight, 5.56 as five-five-six, and so on. 8. Another gun one. Bullets come in magazines usually, or drums. You can call bullets rounds, cartridges, or just bullets. The part that is ejected from the gun is a shell, casing, or shell casing. Shotgun ammunition is called shells, the part that's ejected from the gun is called a hull, and in shotguns, the bit that holds the ammo (on a pump-action shotgun) is called a tube. 9. And for the last tip, skills can go above 100%.

I'm going to enjoy this!

I didn't realise that. I did notice though when Jon was setting his optional traits for his build, some of the descriptions were different from the ones I get on the GOG version. MATN, I'm happy to see you play this! I hope it goes well for you, and that you'll follow it up with Fallout 2, the best game ever made IMHO! Some tips: 1) You can leave skill points unspent when you level up, saving them for whenever you suddenly need to raise a skill. Yes, you can leave 20-30 points or so unused in your character screen, in reserve, and spend them any time you need them. Just don't let the skill point counter get to 99, the game won't save/store more than that! 2) It's a very good thing you picked up that rope in Shady Sands, you'll need it soon! Later on in the game, you'll need rope again. 3) Bags don't raise carry capacity, but they help you organize your inventory. You can open them to put things inside, so you're not scrolling through dozens of items to find what you need. Don't use more than one or two, though, IIRC they're not weightless. Also, bags you find may have things already in them - always open them to check! 4) One of your options for your third perk (at level 12, w/Skilled) is the 'Mutate!' perk, which lets you switch one of your traits for something else. I suggest taking this perk, and replacing Skilled (which won't be useful by that point, at all) with Gifted. Just be aware that your skills will drop by 20%, be mindful of your situation at the time! 5) Skills books don't work like in FO3 or New Vegas, where they give a flat # of points to a skill. I don't remember the formula, but basically: if your skill is 80% or higher, it'll do nothing (and you can sell it), but if it's lower, it'll raise the skill by tens of points! Just read that scout book and see. 6) Make up for your low STR by using Speech and relying on your companions (don't get between them and the enemy!). Also, keep Buffout on you so you can use a good weapon in an emergency - stick to the 10mm pistol for wildlife and unarmored humans.

A shame the early groups (like the NCR and Brotherhood) used to be so good and dutiful. Probably with the passing of Tandi and to a lesser-extent, her son and the first Maxson of so, their ideals and teachings became warped or pushed aside. Oooh, very nice. I'd been hoping you'd get around to this sometime. Been a zillion years since I last played the original Fallout (or Fallout 2, for that matter), but if I recall correctly you can use items (certain ones, anyway) by double-clicking on them in your inventory. Also, those two slots that you have your 10mm and your knife in presently aren't just weapons slots; you can put just about any object in one or the other of the slots, and use them to affect the landscape in some way. That, for instance, is how you use the lockpicks, when you find a locked door or chest or something: equip it in one of your two item slots, click on its icon on the bottom bar in the main game screen, and you will get a kind of crosshairs icon. Then you click on the locked door or whatever, and the lockpicking commences. The multitool, rope and crowbar work in essentially the same way, though I think the crowbar can also be used as a weapon. One more tip: make sure you check the south and west edges of rooms enclosed by walls. Those parts of the rooms won't be visible unless you get right up close to the walls, but both this game and Fallout 2 were notorious for hiding goodies and loot in the blind spots. Also, it's too late now, but it's worth it to loot Vault 13 before you head off into the wasteland, because there's a lot of useful stuff that can make starting out a lot easier (stimpacks, maybe some radiation meds, more ammo, if I'm remembering correctly). I think there are also some nifty side quests and stories involving what's going on in your home vault that would be worth checking out. Glad you're finally doing this, and good luck!

Regarding the bags Jon, it's been about 15 years since I played though this game but if I recall correctly they don't increase your carry capacity. However you can store items in them, even when the bag is in your inventory. Which means that you can use them like folders to de-clutter and organise your inventory (have a bag for ammo, a bag for medicine, etc). Get's quite useful later in the game when you're carrying around half the wasteland.
