The "Sweet Nothin's" get me every time. Is that a nuc behind a window with an entry hole drilled beneath through a wall? Never seen anything like that.

Yes but it'd a 2 x 6 with the hole and 3/4 pvc so they can get into the hive.

How long have you kept bees
@ericgandy1291 Жыл бұрын
I moved a hive 12 miles away for over a week and when i brought them back I placed them 1/4 mile from where i caught them as a swarm. There were bees hanging out at the original location for a few days after I brought them back. Most of them went to the new location, the rest wandered off over the next week.

thats what you might think but they died off.

Just like facing entrance to the south. If you do cutouts you will find the entrances are on the north wall almost all the time. Bees prefer the shade side.

Sadly all the bee trees I know of I've never really checked the direction except for 1 and it was south east

@@WoolieBsApiary Only exceptions are trees. But most are not south in the sun.

@@Mackabees I stopped doing cutouts 10 years ago. I'm all about the feral or free living bees now. I do a lot of swarm trapping where I know there are no beekeepers. It helps being a local state inspector

Bees are naturally found in forest areas right, so shade isn’t a problem to them.
@WoolieBsApiary Жыл бұрын
but as you can see this colony will get sun for 6 hours a day in winter

But how many times have you heard the 3 day rule? Just like the 3 mile rule. I sold a couple nucs to a lady 2.7 miles straight line from me I had foragers come back home that day when she opened them up
@BradfieldsBeeYard Жыл бұрын
I counted less than 20 bees meandering around the old location. When considering there's 10's of thousands in your colony, statistically speaking, that "old wives tale" looks legit to me. Expecting 100% anything, all the time, isn't realistic or scientific. We all have our anecdotes but few of us are truly doing research.

how long was the video? from pulling the paper out of the entrance tube getting my phone out of my pocket and unlocking it opening the camera app selecting video and starting the video was maybe 3 minutes from beginning to the end of the video so if i had stood there for 5 more minutes wasting your time videoing it you would have see A LOT more bees piling up on that box. thanks for watching

@@WoolieBsApiary you're welcome. your research, from start to finish, spanned all of five or so minutes and you're ready to write a thesis debunking old wives tales? 👍 I'm not stating in any fashion you're not a good beekeeper. You're probably a better beekeeper than I am. All I'm saying is I don't think this supports your theory that closing up the colony for a few days in an attempt to force the majority of the bees in the colony to reorient isn't quality advise or good practice.
@WoolieBsApiary Жыл бұрын
@@BradfieldsBeeYard it is if you want to lose all of your foragers. the easy way is to move them 5 plus miles away and bring them back after they have REALLY had to reorient to the new location. i move mine 17 miles away for 2 weeks then move them back. ill leave this here you do your bees and believe what you want and ill continue to be an observant beekeeper and do what works.

Hot dog! Is there stuff inside that box that they are stealing?
@WoolieBsApiary Жыл бұрын
if your referencing the hive in the window no that is the hive of bees that have been locked in the hive for 15 days. the bees on the hive stand are the first of many that flew back to the original location 16 days prior thus the 3 day rule being debunked. i put a colony in the window every winter and that will be the first colony i graft into for my first round of queens in early March. it stays 50 degrees or warmer in the garage during the winter and no wind

Bingo. There's so many old wives tales with beekeeping.
