According to Robbin Williams, the word "Jumanji" is a Zulu word that translated into English actually means "Many Effects", whether this is actually correct or not, we don't know. However what do know is that the movie Jumanji did indeed have, Many Effects.

Pushing the limits of what was possible for special and visual effects at the time, not only did Jumanji have more puppets and animatronics than Jurassic Park, but it also had over double the computer effects, more than 12 minutes! and a much wider variety of style of effects.
So, in this video, we're going to explore...
Some of those detailed models and sets, like the overgrown vine set or the house splitting in two, complicated puppets, animatronics, and... well, I suppose you'd call this "Plantatronics" and incredible digital effects!
...For this warping effect, ILM didn't actually have any proper scans or measurements of the actor's hands so they got the production company to send them a Xerox of the actor putting his hands on the photocopier's glass.
ILM even spent 3 months developing two ground-breaking software programs,
one was called iSculpt and was used to create realistic facial expressions
and the other was for creating realistic digital hair and fur for the awesome CG lion and these ... Ummm... not-so-awesome monkeys.
Designing the look for all the animals took months of research, hundreds of photographs, and numerous sketches before they managed to find the correct balance between amusing and threatening which was both wild enough to scare the audience and still tame enough to achieve a family-friendly rating.
The mantra for every movie is "Get as much in camera as you can" so during the design process they also had to assess which animal could be a physical puppet and captured "in camera", and which had to be CGI.
For example, animals that didn't have to move around too much, like the plants and the crocodile could be 100% animatronics, animals that had to have a wide range of movement, like the mosquitoes and the monkeys were 100% CGI, and animals that had to move around but also had close-up beauty shots or had to interact with the cast were both animatronics and CGI.
The lion was one of these digital/practical hybrids.
They built the lion with an animatronic head that could be controlled by external operators whilst the front paws were controlled by a creature performer.
This performer was concealed inside the lion and wore a headset with LCD screens in order to see how he was moving. the entire puppet was then supported by a crane on a dolly that it could be moved around on.
The animatronic lion was used for the close-up and the facial expression shots, and the CG version was used for the shots that required full body movement.
If you stop to look for it, you can actually see the transitions between the two quite clearly in this scene
We start with the animatronic model, here too, now it's CGI back to animatronics and back to CGI
Now here, if we slow it down, you can see just how good their new fur tool was.
There are around 1.5 million hairs individual on this lion and the two minutes of total screen time that the CG lion has, took 5 months to complete.
Now I know what you're thinking "if they were able to make this CG lion look so good, why did they leave these monkey's looking so bad?"
Well, the short answer is that, back when the movie was made, they just couldn't possibly make them look any better, and the main reasons for this were lighting, and reference.
For the lion scene, they had an animatronic puppet that they could use as a light reference on set, the scene also occurs inside the house under controlled lighting conditions.
This meant that even though there were parts of the lion (Like this rear leg here) that didn't quite sit right in the shot they could be hidden in shadow.
The monkeys though were a completely different story.
Even though maquettes were made to define the monkey's look, there was no puppet that they could use for light reference, and the monkeys themselves mainly appeared outdoors in broad daylight with little or no shadows to hide their flaws.

As a child, I came up with my own explanation for this. All creatures of the game have a common magical origin, they are like ghosts consisting of ectoplasm, so their unnaturalness and bizarreness looks normal, because they are not ordinary animals.

This video stands as an important lesson in why it's always best to mix practical effects with CGI, whenever possible, as opposed to the modern tendency to rely almost exclusively on CG effects. The manner in which they shot the car being crushed practically and then added a CG elephant works marvelously. These days, filmmakers would almost certainly compose both the car and the elephant with CGI and as a result, the effect wouldn't look half as seamless.

Maybe 10 years ago, but not today. Today it would be almost impossible to tell that the CGI wasn't practical as long as the VFX team is any good, and their budget was adequate enough. Movies have shots that are entirely CGI that people are totally unaware of, because nothing too crazy is happening and suspension of disbelief isn't being pushed too hard. But doing as much practically as possible is always good, at the least for reference to the animation, but we are very far away from the technological abilities of Jumanji, and really, that elephant does no hold up well anymore, or those awful drop shadows on the rhino.

The real problem with CGI is they often overdo it, by adding "cool" aspects to the effect, but then it gets overdone to the point it just doesn't look real.

Complete agree that practical effects are still crucial to making believable special effects. It's sad with today's technology, practical effects are never used (I think Mad Max Fury Road is the last big budget movie to use practical effects and they were amazing).

@@peoplez129 Actually, the real problem is when the VFX team isn't given enough time and resources to do their work. Basically all the big VFX studios have *amazing* artists, specialists and experts on their teams, who definitely know how to make almost anything work and look amazing... As long as they're given the time to make it look amazing, and get the support they need. I can almost guarantee you, that anytime you can tell something's CGI, or the CGI is bad, that it's not the VFX artists' or studio's fault, it's the fault of the budget, or someone interfering with the VFX studio, by for example having them redo months of work, not allowing them to take the references they need, or them being asked to do something that'll just look bad.

I think the subpar look for the monkeys actually works for the tone of the film. I think it gave them an uncanny look that suggested they were from some other realm. And it made them scarier.

In addition, they are much smarter and more emotional than earthly counterparts. Perhaps they are not even animals in the usual biological sense, but spirits from ectoplasm, which may partially explain their final elastic metamorphosis with other animals.

A friend was able to take a few of us on a tour of the set at Bridge Studios, I remember looking close at the lion and being amazed at how realistic it was, incredibly detailed. The bookshelves all had signs on them saying remember this is make believe so don't put anything on them, and the underside of the shelves were all routed out resembling wormwood to break easier. Remarkably interesting to say the least. So many memories popped back watching this video, thanks for posting it!

One of my favourite and most nostalgic films from my childhood. Incredible & very clever use of both CGI & Practical effects. I especially loved how they explained the cross-cutting between the miniature house and the torn rubber floorboards to create the illusion that the house was being split in two!

I miss DVDs for this very reason. i always found behind the scenes footage and discussions to be fascinating. Now your lucky if production will give you a 5 min montage of the cast and crew smiling. And its hard to find any decent interviews that go into any depth.. This was great to watch!

I used to re-rent dvds JUST to watch the behind of scenes and commentaries (gosh I loved watching my fav movies with the director and actors explaining how it was). @@robertmac7833 I was in charge of the Rubber end of special effects. Like the car that the computer generated elephant walked over. The whole car was made out of rubber, and we put hydraulic cylinders inside that was connected to a computer program that industrial light and magic made. And then we made it mechanical fish. We made the big vine that came out of the plant that grabbed the kid. lots of mechanical vines, and the Jumanji game board and play pieces And lots of other things if you look my name up, you can see me on IMDb.

I had managed to ask my mother to take me see the movie, she had no idea what it was about. I remember on our way home she said that the special effects, both cgi and animatronics were made to look that way on purpose despite the technical limits which she had no idea about at that time. We as viewers can project ourselves in the movie and know that all those animals and elements were sort of magical so they "had to" look that way. To this day, i still think this was a clever remark from her. Jumanji is my all time favourite movie, i went through school waking up earlier and watch it over and over again every morning. Love that movie and everything about it!

@@saint-gallier I understand that I came up with a more cunning explanation: Dwayne Johnson starred several times in jungle films, so the newest trilogy refers specifically to these jungle films and you can forget about them, because they are all very similar. The only decent alternative storyline of Jumanji for me is an animated series. I watched it in my youth, as soon as I found out about its existence and this animated series was incomparable. Excellent Jumanji, which has taken a different path of development.

@@fgjjdgb3949 Well the animated series had an atmosphere on its own with its own mythology, it was cleverly made and what a great opening theme. The Dwayne Johnson movies have two major flaws: Dwayne Johnson himself - i call him the licence killer and mostly the entire cast, and these movies deny the most important aspect of what makes Jumanji a great story and a great movie: the element of magic thrown into a realistic world. The plot is the opposite of what Von Allsburg's Jumani is. Same goes for Jurassic Park for example, creatures from the past/ a board game are back into a 1992 world and not the other way around: it cannot function for the imagination, not to mention how poorly created these imaginary lands look in the movies. It's bad, so bad and of course it goes too fast with a cheap humour. I am so afraid of what the end of the second movie ushers.

That was kinda cool. Way ahead of it's time.Great story JUMANJI (1995). I miss Robin Williams, as he was one of a kind, and always brought that magic with him when infront of the camera. I remember watching a video clip of another movie behind the scenes, where they had to design water droplets and wave motion and mechanics that would look as real as possible using VFX. We've come so far in what seems such a short time frame. Could you possibly look into WAR OF THE WORLDS - Tom Cruise - (2005). Brilliant movie. Be interesting to see how the specifics were created. Watching this in the 90s, immersed in the movie and also not used to seeing CGI in movies, it never even occurred to me that the animation was "bad." Sure, it was obvious those weren't real monkeys, but it's funny how nowadays they immediately jump out at me as being "bad" CGI. Luckily the movie itself is just as incredible today as ever!

Many Effects will be translated as “Imiphumela Eminingi” in Zulu, which may also mean Many Results. Therefore, Jumanji is 100% not a Zulu word, it’s foreign to us Zulus and the only time we use Jumanji in a sentence is when we ask someone “usuke wayibuka yin lefilm okuthiwa yiJumanji” which means “have you ever watched the movie/film called Jumanji”

I still don't understand how the idea of tornado and spaghettification appeared at the end of the game.
