This game is also known as the hardest Mario game ever and it’s so hard that I got a famicom with a famicom disk system along side Super Mario bros. 2 Imported from Japan so I can register it on my “THESBHD approved hardest video games“ list

As difficult as this game is, I'm intrigued by it, and I am determined to try to get as far as possible. So far, I can get to 4-4.

And this is why back then, it wouldn't be on the store shelves because this game is more like an expansion pack of Game 1 rather than a separate entry. That, and it's much harder and tricker than Game 1 too.

Doki Doki Panic (what would become Super Mario 2) was at least already developed by Nintendo, and since it was just for a promotional event in Japan, would have no reason to be released as is in North America. My theory was that Nintendo didn't want their main franchise to come off as stale right out of the gate, so they reconverted Doki Doki Panic for the sake of keeping the series fresh, while having more time put into Super Mario 3
