Camping in the rain is not fun! Join us as we show you our video of our family camping trip in Criccieth in North Wales. With the weather forecast showing rain for 6 of our 7 days, we knew it would not be special. But we are hardened campers, or at least we thought we were so off we went.
We can tell you that at the end, we did find that no matter how much of a hardened camper you are… The noise and the confinement resulted in it not being that we would recommend to anyone.
The journey starts at about 5am in the morning, we checked the weather (and at that point considered cancelling the holiday.) But, no, like proper camping troopers, we would go. Face the elements and try and make the most of a bad deal
As we travelled to our destination in North Wales, the weather progressively got worse. Windscreen wipers going ten to the dozen and visibility often restricted to about 30ft. But this did not put us off.
Finally, after a very wet and windy journey after approx. 4.5 hours, we arrived at Criccieth. And unbelievably, the rain slowed down to an annoying drizzle, the type that just ensures you are damp through to the bone..
Within 2 hours we had the tent and all gear set up - Which for us was the quickest pitch ever! (Amazing what you can do when getting wet). Unfortunately, the holiday weather more or less continued in this vein for the first 5 days of the holiday.
So, what do you do with two young kids in tow, in a field, in the wet in North Wales?
With the rain only dying off for about two hours a day. And with you having 22 hours being couped up in a tent to think about it, we tried to ensure we utilised this time wisely.
The one thing we can say is that when it was dry, the countryside in Wales is lovely. It has amazing views (when the fog and mist lifted), so after driving the 200 miles plus to get there we wanted to ensure we did do something to remember.
On day 2, the rain stopped for about 2 hours, so we visited the stunning Criccieth Castle. Amazing views and a great bit of history and a great little ice cream parlour down the road.
Day 3, with our 2 hours of dry weather, we visited Caernarfon. Unfortunately, it was too bleak to spend visit the castle. But again, a beautiful town to visit if you are in the area.
Unfortunately, by day 3, tempers were becoming short though. Being crammed in a tent, listening to the rain and wind is not much fun - think of solitary confinement, but louder!
And then to top it all off, the tent sprung a leak! A slow drip was coming through the roof of our Vango Casa Lux tent on the seal.
We know now, that this may be due to us having the storm straps in the centre pulled too tight, but the wind had been horrific, so we had no option the previous night.
The drip got faster and we had to find bigger buckets. Having an ensuite shower in your tent was never the plan..
So wet carpet and bored kids. The week was not going well..
Fortunately, Scott had relatives in Wales, so we were able to visit them one day. And at least it stopped the kids from bouncing on the inflatables. We visited Snowdonia and we have to say although very windy, the views were spectacular.
We went to a huge old quarry, where they filmed the UK version of, I am a Celebrity get me out of here, during lockdown!
And after couple of hours, it was back to the tent, rain playing drums on the roof, kids bouncing off everything. By day 5 of doing this, Scott was on the verge of a breakdown, my hair was starting to go grey and even the kids had holiday blues, whilst being on holiday.
Day 6 - The sun!!! At last, the sun was starting to show its face. So off we went to try and make some use of the wetsuits and bodyboards that we had brought with us. We went to check out Aberdaron beach. A beautiful village and beach out past Abersoch. Unfortunately, it was very windy, but at least we had been touched by some rays of sun. We then did some shrimping back at Criccieth beach, which the kids loved.
And then the final day we were extra spoiled with blue skies. We went to the amazing Blackrock sands near Porthmadog. What a stunning lovely sandy beach this is. Easily rivalling many Cornish beaches.
And then up to Snowdonia to check out some more amazing scenery.
All in all, the holiday, was saved by these last two days. Amazing how two days of sun made us smile so much.
If nothing else, this holiday did teach us how hardy we were, but it also makes us think about whether holidays abroad or a caravan may suit us better in the future....

I paid good money for one of the best quality synthetic fiber tents that can be bought for this reason. Because I hate pitching in the rain. In fact, I won't. If the weather is bad and not breaking I'll go home. My peace is worth more than the lost fees.

@@TheHadwinsTV It will get better, sometimes you check the weather and rain arrives when no rain is predicted so just go with the flow. I think you need to buy "Dometic Seam Sealer 60ml Awnings Tents Waterproof" Also "get Scotchgard Water Shield Waterproof Tent Gear Clothing Protector Spray 400ml" for everywhere else. You should be fine after this. You will need quite a few tubes of the sealant may be 4, to paint it on all around the seams. It paints on wet and hardens as it dries. Possibly 2 cans of the spray. Oh sorry for typo on previous post. Meant many, not money, but sure you got the gist. Solo female car and tent camper. 🇬🇧

Re: the leak. Maybe the problem is (made worse by) the fact that the retaining straps appear to pull down the apex of the tent to create a pool where the rain sits instead of being allowed to run off. Probably you’ll say well I always pitch like that - but if the seam has got dodgy it could make things worse….IDK - just a thought. Good vid. Memories are made of this eh? 😊
@TheHadwinsTV
@TheHadwinsTV Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, a lot of people say it was due to us having storm straps too tight, but at some points the wind was so strong, we needed everything up to prevent the tent from taking off...

@@TheHadwinsTV Storm straps were my thoughts too, but regardless of any potential pooling on top of the tent, the hydrostatic head of the casa lux fabric should be able to handle it, as long as the seems are taped / sealed properly. I guess the straps were pulling at the seems too much weakening the sealing tape. Reseal all seems inside and out with some Fabsil seem sealer, and reproof the entire outside of the tent with something like HLS FS-75 Fabric sealer (you'll need a pressurised spray bottle.) Do this and the tent will last for years longer. Stick the Fabsil in your camping gear, and next time this happens, you only have to wait for a dry few hours to reseal on site. Or just cut your losses and replace the tent, we're getting rid of our Casa Lux after just 2 short uses, because without the doors fully open, the airflow is rubbish. Any hint of Sun and we bake, due to there only being one mesh door. We much prefer our smaller Icarus 500DLX for it's build quality and better design. That has a mesh door on the side and front, so that you can open up both for great airflow without letting bugs in.
@ViscountCharles
@ViscountCharles 7 ай бұрын
The storm straps - and just the general action of the fabric pulling against the stitches - will cause the seam holes to open up a bit, and the seam tape will stop working. The answer is to bodge that area on both sides with some seam sealant next time it's dry (thinned with a mix of 75% seam sealant, 25% mineral spirits).

Tents were generally made of canvas back in the 50's 60's 70's. They were inherently water proof. The modern tent is made of plastic and you can often see light through the stitching. I see that they often come with a warning: Drizzle proof.! We spent 40 years under canvas all over the country ;our first plastic tent was a shocker.

The final time was pretty much like your week, the field was draining under our ground sheet.....Never again ! Got home, sold the tent, bought a motorhome and never looked back..... 7 years later and not a single regret. The GK's are grown now and don't come any more so just the 2 of us. No way I would go back to tenting. Some fantastic memories though so make the most of it...

Great video. I am a camper and camped for many years in a large tent which never leaked. But it was a german made canvas one which weighed a ton. I Now have a small campervan to which I attach a tailgater tent, making the whole thing 22 feet long. It goes up in minutes. Someone else mentions seamsealer, a glue which is applied to the seam inside of the tent and will cure your leak. However, what we always take is a large Tarp to put over the tent bit of the outfit. Even if there are leaks, this will keep the tent dry and again, goes up in minutes. Better still, it has a reflective surface on the inside which cools the tent in the boiling weather you did not have, and also provides an awning to sit in and somewhere to put muddy boots and wet rainwear.
@TheHadwinsTV
@TheHadwinsTV 6 ай бұрын
Hi, we were able to resolve the leak in the end with some sealer. As it now stands we have actually bought a new tent, we did look at campervans and caravans, but the expense vs how often we think we could use them, did play a big part. But next year, we mat be looking again, and we do like the sound of a campervan with the tailgator tent👍
