The battery pack is a good idea, also get a 12 volt car adapter for the hand held. It can charge the battery and you can also run the radio off of it.

Indeed! Once a year or so, we run a family drill so that we stay familiar and mod things that might have changed since the previous year. Thanks for watching! 73, de KM4ACK

Excellent ideas! Agree about the phone #s. I still remember my grandparents # from 40 years ago but couldnt tell you my son's today. Technology is awesome but it makes us lazy. As for the radio batteries, you can by Alkaline battery packs for most HTs so any source of AA batteries could power your radio. And lastly practice the plan! Everytime i hand my XYL an HT I have to remind her of a few things. So make sure everyone is useful familiar with the gear in your kit. Keep up the good work. 73 Tim de KF7VUT

I can still recall the phone number I had growing up but none of the recent ones. Speaking of radios, I created my own cheat sheet for her radio. Printed on a laminated 4x6 card front and back with pictures. :) Stays right next to the comms plan. Speaking of practice.....I think it's about time for our yearly drill. 73, de KM4ACK

My family didn't have a phone number until I was 12y. We had a party line. But, my parents didn't my siblings and I use of the phone. I didn't have personal phone usage until discharged from the Navy and began college in 1969. For the next 30y I carried about 30 phone numbers in memory. Alkaline battery pack for each HT is a good idea. I have 4 HT's with alkaline battery packs for backup. KB8AMZ

Great plan. I've been telling my wife we need to develop a shtf comms plan, so I started working on one. We're in tornado alley. Many times my wife has tried to call me from the stairwell from her office bunkering down for a active tornado warning. It's hit or miss if the cell call gets out. I think I thought of everything you did. Wife works about 45 mi. away, maybe 35 line of sight. I'm working on a foot path, markers along the way every so many ft. or so (ribbon tied on something, etc.). HF Yaesu for her vehicle if it's safe to drive. If not, grab the edc/bob with a portable ham, dedicated freq's, dedicated times to power up make contact, etc. One thing I did was, we have uv5r's so I bought the usb charger for them. We both have 30,000 mah solar battery packs that we can use to recharge them back up. Great video btw.

Always better to have a plan and not need it that need a plan and not have it :-)

Very sensible advice. Tim K makes a good point about practicing a plan. Best laid plans can go out of the window when people are frightened or in shock. If someone remembers half of what/how they need to do things that will be a lot better than none of it👌

KM4ACT Thanks for the good ideas. My wife is not a ham but I do have a GMRS license that covers the whole family, so I need to teach her how to use a radio. Its also a good idea about making a list of phone #s. Thanks 73 Doug/kb8dnq

Thanks Doug. The video was meant to get people thinking. You never know when you will need the plan. I went so far as to print out photo instructions on the radio for my wife....just in case. Even though your YL isn't a ham, she can still monitor the local repeaters for your traffic provided the repeaters are still on the air. Thanks for watching! 73, de KM4ACK

Hey boss...another alternative to airplane mode, at least with android phones, is emergency mode. Hold the power button and select "emergency mode" and the phone will go into a limited usage state but still allow calls. At 50% battery life my phone has over 17 hours remaining of usage in emergency mode. Just an idea :) 73 Vince N3VMC

That is a great idea. "Emergency Mode" on Android and "Low Power Mode" on iPhone. Those came along after I made up our plan. Might need to go back and mod my instructions. Thanks for pointing this out! 73, de KM4ACK

The YL and I began working on a list of phone numbers about six months ago. We were going to print it out, laminate it, and have it in each vehicle. The only issue is is that we keep finding phone numbers to add to the list. Hi hi Time to finalize this list and get it done. Thank you for the video and the reminder.
