Kate's old friend (Rachel Roberts), now a famous actress, is so impressed with Buddy's school-play performance that she offers her a role.

Roger Ebert considered Kristy McNichol's performance in "Only When I Laugh" to be far and away the best in the film, one which starred such renowned actors as Marsha Mason, Joan Hackett, and James Coco. Her character Polly was very much like Buddy Lawrence, but with a mother who was a far cry from Kate.

No matter which path you choose, there will be times when you have regrets. Angie sees the peaceful domestic life Kate has. Kate wonders "what if" she had an amazing career. It doesn't mean you made the "wrong" choice, you just suddenly realize that you made sacrifices to be on the path you chose.

There was a standing rule at our home that we NEVER embarrassed our parents or put them in the hot seat. We also never slammed doors and yelled and smarted off to our parents. Buddy's level of disrespect was totally unacceptable at our house. She would have found herself in a world of self induced trouble. Yeah...yeah...yeah...It was just a show. @jazzycafe57074 жыл бұрын
A chance at a career at 14? She has no proper schooling for her "craft", no prior training or work experience, and no agent: It's not as if she is booking a contracted tv series with SAG benefits and legl protections as the real life Kristy was able to as a union actress. "Buddy" had no guarantee of any bookings after being on the road with Angela, and she certainly didn't have any entities that would look out for her saftey and best interests while under Angela's care. Angelahas no boundaries and no discernment as evidenced by her cruel words & disrespecting her friend's parenting choices, her actions already rendered her unfit.. Angela showed showed she was more concerned about her own selfish whims and instant gratification vs. long term developement & welfare of her best friend's child, and said best friend's relationship with the child. That speaks volumes about Angela's character, and as someone who has worked in various areas of fine and performing arts I wouldn't trust someone like Angela any further than I could throw her when it comes to being a mature, rational mentor for a child. Theater life is tremendously hedonistic and hard enough for many adults ro handle; a child like Buddy was not ready for that environment without proper structure and guidance in place; I would bet money by age 16, selfish, flighty women like Angela would have been pawning menteès like Buddy off to God knows how many men of influence for Buddy's "career" moves- all under the guise of "romanticism" and learning to become a "woman": we know this example (and worse!) at that time for many of Kristy Nichols's' teenaged peers during that era in real life , having disasterous effects on their lives in later years No way should Kate (or any real life parent) release her daughter to the likes of a black widow spider like Angela.

What's with all the Kristy McNichol hate? It reads like a bunch of homophobic ranting. She was an incredible actress; Mike Nichols who is one of the best and most prolific directors of the stage plus silver and small screens had the presence of mind to see enough by casting her in this plum role at the tender age of 14. The realism she brought to the character of Buddy is unprecedented and most certainly deserving of both Emmys she won for it. No other actress from that period could have tackled such a complex part better. Then she brought her appeal to equally memorable roles in successful films like LITTLE DARLINGS and NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA. Shame on you people for saying such terrible things about an actress who was full of heart, talent, insecurity and what would later be diagnosed as mental illness. The snarky backhanded "tomboy"/"Buddy" comments don't help the case for any of you jerks who are actually reading this comment in her defense which someone must do since she has been out of the public eye for nearly three decades. Seeing what you've all got to say, can't say I blame her. She deserved all the love received during this time period, and it should be ongoing. She could have given Jodie Foster a run for her money had she not fallen prey to an evil force so much larger than herself.

Acclaimed British actress Rachel Roberts (Angela), died from suicide aged 53, less than two years after appearing in this episode. On November 26, 1980 she swallowed barbiturates and lye, which propelled her body through a decorative plate glass screen at her home in Studio City, CA. Roberts, an Academy Award nominee & two time BAFTA award winner; was survived by her ex-husband, British actor & Oscar winner Sir Rex Harrison.
