Varies on your skillset and education. My Granddaddy (that's what I call my biological grandfather, my Granddad is technically my step grandfather but never once called him that) was in the Navy as a Seabbe. He served almost a year long tour in Vietnam, and due to him being really good at his MOS on handling heavy vehicles, he was boosted to a Petty Officer Third Class pretty quickly. He was offered to be a Second Class, and build up to First Class, but he turned it down, finished his tour, was honorably discharged, and didn't serve a second tour because the war had ended. Depending on Aptitude, how long you've done something, your knowledge, how well you do something etc., you could be boosted up a couple ranks. My Granddad was Army and was a Second Lieutenant (later a Captain before he was discharged) because he finished ROTC. As for this episode of family guy, I am sure it's just a gag.
