May be calm, but in most instances, you’re scrambling to keep up with everything that’s going on. Family medicine is less stressful from a pt acuity standpoint, but more stressful from a time management standpoint, given the higher case load of pts and limited interaction time.

I’m excited as I start my physical assessment for my FNP program. I to chose the MSN track r/t no interest in the extra research. As I binge on your videos I’m excited to learn, but so overwhelmed by the learning still to come! I’ve been at this FNP gig for 1.5 years and now for my clinicals to start after this class. At this point I don’t feel like I’m ready for clinicals and I’m terrified. I too am excited for the future but sad to leave my friends and the job that I’ve loved/hated for the past 13 years. Hi Liz, really enjoyed this. I’m in my second semester of my FNP program and this helped me understand more about what my day to day will look like. I was happy to see that you do part-time work. I’d be super curious about what negotiating looks like in general for an NP position, but also including what it would look like if you pursue part-time work. Like do you get any vacation? Health care? Or should I not expect there to be any “perks” because it is part-time. Maybe you could even do a video about this if you haven’t already?! Thanks again for all you do.

Hey! I'm so glad it was helpful! I plan on doing a video on negotiating NP contracts at some point soon! I actually just finished grilling a ton of my friends about their experiences so I have a bit more information than just my experience. IN terms of part time jobs, I work SO part time that I have absolutely no benefits. Usually jobs I saw posted for 24 hours had some benefits though ( I only work 14 hrs/week). Good idea about the video idea! HOpe the end of your semester goes well!

What is the extent of infectious disease and radiology in the FNP primary care setting? Can you order wound, blood, sputum, or urine cultures on a pt and subsequently decide for yourself what antibiotic to prescribe without an ID consult? And do you perform chest X-rays or CTs to get a better idea of what the patient is looking like? Ty!!

@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 4 жыл бұрын
I've never done paper charting as an NP, only as a nurse so I dont have a ton to compare to. I can type faster than I can write, so that may be quicker, but with the EMR there are SO MANY required fields that may end up taking longer. I'm sure it's all what you are used to.

@BroadwayDuchess13
@BroadwayDuchess13 4 жыл бұрын
@@daishanewsomednp6956 I was a CMA for 8 years prior and it doesn't really give any head start on the process. In fact, before nursing school I was required to get CNA certification, because it wasn't part of my MA training. MAs and RNs can have similar-looking tasks, especially in an outpatient environment, but the training is completely different. MA is very task-based -- you learn the HOW, you don't really delve that deeply into the WHY. In nursing school, learning the WHY really hones your clinical thinking and approach. I was fortunate to work in a teaching environment when I was a MA, so I learned how to do a lot of procedures and got to ask a lot of questions, but I think that's not really that common. Most of my MA cohort didn't do half of what I got to do in terms of hands-on experience. Sorry this is so long, but I think in hindsight, if I'd been sure of nursing from the beginning, I would've skipped the MA certification and gone straight to the BSN (my hospital system is all about that magnet status). I wasn't certain, though, and I wasn't ready to commit to inpatient work schedules, so I took a roundabout way. Hope that gives you a bit of a perspective from both sides!

Im glad you enjoyed it! I could if I wanted to, but I prefer to not wear a white coat in family medicine as I've found patients are more comfortable in that setting without it. The physician I work with feels the same way so we just go without.

This was great! I’ve been a nurse for 2 years and thinking of becoming a primary care NP. jury’s still out on gerontology vs FNP (and I’ve watched all your videos on the topic... just can’t make a final decision 😅).

I'd definitely look at what kind of jobs you want on job boards, and then see what they are looking for! Kinda backwards engineer the process.

I definitely had to sacrifice some money and perks of jobs that are more full time (paid CME, paid time off, etc) but for me in this case it was worth it. It's easier at small private practices I found

Loved this video! I'm considering going back to school to become an FNP!! Did you do an online program or an in-person program?? If you did an online program, how was your experience looking for clinical sites? Thats the biggest factor right now in my decision to do online vs in person.
@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 5 жыл бұрын
I did a hybrid program, So I was on campus once a month. My school found my clinical for me which was a huge relief. If you think finding clinical may be challenging in your area I woudl definitely look into in person or a hybrid program!

I am doing an online program..now and I chose online because I learn better that way....my advice would be to reach out to the NP's you already know...I am using the NP's I work with and they also know other NP's.....I need to feel comfortable in clinical and I find it easier if you already have a relationship with the preceptor..hope that helps

Nursing is such a versatile progression and there’s so many things you can do with it and advance into. I have a channel on here where I chronicle my day as a nurse practitioner and even tips to get you through FNP school. It’s definitely worth it!

Hey Liz. I've watched quite a few of your videos as I cant get enough of other people's NP experience (helps to monitor how normal/ common my experiences are). I'm more of a passive user of social media, so finally branching out to comment section 👍. Pretty accurate representation of my day but add quite a bit more interruptions. I almost am shifting between different requests constantly and do quick jots as to not forget where I left off... ( which TM had the perforation again???). Keep up the good work/ healthcare struggle is real.

Welcome to the comment section! Oh gosh. The interuptions. I probably should have put some of those in there. Its kind of like being at home with my toddler haha. NONSTOP interruptions. I have to write literally everything down because I would never be able to keep track of my train of thought .

Ugh no I wish! I definitely make a lot less than I did when I worked full time as a nurse. I make more hourly than I did as a nurse but I just work so little that the numbers don't line up. I hope to never work full time, but when my kids are all in school I'm sure I'll move to at least 24 hours or add on volunteering or teaching or something

Xoxo BEE don’t allow other ppl to bully you. There are bullies in every profession, nursing definitely is competitive and full of fake tough bullies but you have to stand your grown and go out and fight for what you want.
