That is the way that most pension funds work. The widow will get every penny paid in to her husbands pension fund. She will not get monthly pension payments. Nothing unfair about that.

It is bad but they should only get the pension for the years he had served. 25 years is to long for not receiving pension benefits. You have to consider that he is that so he was the beneficiary and primary consumer of the pension. Despite the families loss, the benefits end or get reduced by his death.

I worked for a construction company with a life insurance benefit- 1x, 2x or 3x options were available for a miniscule price- $250k-$500k- $750k. The construction industry has its health and safety difficulties, but police work has its randomness- why are there not better benefits for the officer's family?

Not only will she get all those benefits but a Social Security survivor benefits (probably $2000+ a month). Monetarily she is probably in better condition than if he was alive. She can reinvest his pension refund and be fine in 30 yrs with that as her pension. Obviously she would rather he be alive, but he left her well cared for.

It’s not that simple. Like almost all public employees they don’t pay into social security. He didn’t pay into social security for the past 11 years working as a police officer. That could have a big impact on what she is eligible to receive.

Not necessarily. My dad had life insurance (a few policies actually) but these companies will do whatever it takes to avoid paying out. According to certain companies dying in a crash isn’t considered an accident apparently even if you aren’t at fault.

Then who would take the risk to be a law enforcement officer in this state? 10 years means he was fully vested so reimbursement yes but at preseent value or value with growth? In other states any line of duty death means pernsion survivor benefits are paid. No different if an officer becomes disabled and retires.

Such a young family. Did he purchase a term life insurance policy to help financially in just such an event? While it might not be cheap, a $1milliin term policy would set his survivors for life. When I was young, newly married with young children, and a mortgage, I did exactly that, so many family wouldn’t be destitute if I passed. Yes, it took cash from income and I couldn’t buy the nicest car or take extravagant vacations, but as parents we need to make sacrifices…

So sad he died. Heartbreaking the children will grow up without their wonderful father. That said, while this is very emotional, will the same apply to all government employees or just law enforcement? Also the family is already receiving significant financial compensation, should the taxpayers be providing more than was originally agreed? Difficult questions during a difficult time and hope they can heal in time.

Looks like, according to what I saw, they are immediately getting $200,000, plus they are getting an additional $100,000 a month for 10 years, so that is $1.3 million, plus other benefits. I personally don't see an issue, but that's just me. $1.3 million over 10 years, plus other benefits, seems like a good thing. As long as they aren't wasteful with their spending, you can make $100,000 a month go a very long way.

That I doubt maybe 100,000 a year for 10 years I would believe. 75% of his earnings for life and all pensions contributions refunded. Sounds pretty sweet to me. You have to listen to the audio as well, the slide is poorly written. They get the immediate $100k plus an additional $100k which is doled out over the course of 10 years in monthly amounts. So less than $1000 per month. Nowhere near $1 million sir.

This is a side effect of an antiquated system where no person has a “share” of the pension fund. The fix should change that to where an individual builds up a fund just like most the rest of us have.
