It is bad but they should only get the pension for the years he had served. 25 years is to long for not receiving pension benefits. You have to consider that he is that so he was the beneficiary and primary consumer of the pension. Despite the families loss, the benefits end or get reduced by his death.

I worked for a construction company with a life insurance benefit- 1x, 2x or 3x options were available for a miniscule price- $250k-$500k- $750k. The construction industry has its health and safety difficulties, but police work has its randomness- why are there not better benefits for the officer's family?

Such a young family. Did he purchase a term life insurance policy to help financially in just such an event? While it might not be cheap, a $1milliin term policy would set his survivors for life. When I was young, newly married with young children, and a mortgage, I did exactly that, so many family wouldn’t be destitute if I passed. Yes, it took cash from income and I couldn’t buy the nicest car or take extravagant vacations, but as parents we need to make sacrifices…

So sad he died. Heartbreaking the children will grow up without their wonderful father. That said, while this is very emotional, will the same apply to all government employees or just law enforcement? Also the family is already receiving significant financial compensation, should the taxpayers be providing more than was originally agreed? Difficult questions during a difficult time and hope they can heal in time.
