The nerd in me can't help but share some facts that I've found a lot of people don't know or realize. Every flat mate and romantic partner I've had hasn't known that spice isn't a taste bud on your tongue. The spice we experience is caused by pain receptors on the tongue being "confused" after one of the proteins from the capsaicinoid family binds to them. The receptors are confused because they are meant to detect when food is too hot (temperature wise) to eat. These proteins happen to fit the receptors and when they bind to them, they trick our brain into thinking we're eating food that is too hot (temperature-wise). So, it fires up your central nervous system to yell at you to stop doing the thing. A lot of us, though, don't like to pay that any mind, that's what the milk is for! :) TLDR: anytime we eat spicy foods we are literally experiencing pain, no taste involved! ps) I'm looking up this chip and plan to convince a poor soul to do the challenge with me.
