I agree. But, you're not going to fix the stupidity and self interest of most people like this. But, you can show love to the person with dementia by putting up barriers where there is a family member or family friend always with the affected love one, protecting them from themselves and others. See my main post. And, there is no such thing as, we're to busy. That's like leaving your child abandoned for the same reason. Really, We protected our mom through all this by making life changes in our lives to be there and protect her from such potential moments. That was in our power and ability to keep mom safe; not changing stupid people. We just can't change or fix stupid and still have a full time job. Complaining about fools didn't help mom. Us being there did.

The problem with american police is they use jail for every freaking thing. The police can sit here and justify taking harmless people to jail when thats not why jail was created in America at all. Back in the cowboy days jail was used properly. It was used to protect the public until the violent outlaws could see a judge, or get hanged. Nowadays they use jails for every unnecessary infraction. My point is maybe if the police would just start handing out tickets, and say go to court instead of using jail as punishment things would be different.

This is so heartbreaking 💔. I worked as a security guard at a hospital for 8 years. One night a 'Code Grey' was announced over the PA for a patient with dementia that had left his room. When I caught up with him, he turned around and punched me in the chest and then in the face. I declined to file charges because it was clear he did not know where he was or what he was doing. I felt if he went to jail, it would've made his situation even worse. Unfortunately for me, I developed neck problems which I'm still dealing with today. But I dont regret how I reacted, that poor man needed help, not jail.

not a fan of police in general, but im a realest. in times of awkwardness, people insulate with humor. the statements of the officers, to me, nothing more than human nature. there was no malice in their words or true mocking of the old man. they didnt go overboard and take it to a level of excess or berate the old man to his face, they simply sought to verbally provide some levity to the situation. as to whether they should have changed his diaper, i dont think most police intake stations provide elder care and if i was them i would not personally want to change a strangers diaper. this is what medical caregivers sign up for. i dont think officers had that in mind when they filled out their application.also, lets not forget the legal ramifications... i would not want to accept the potential liability associated with undressing and the level of care required when changing the diaper of an elderly person with dementia. if this level of care is to be expected of our police facilities when processing those with mental issues, then a budget to provide the proper resources and staffing needs to be proposed and voted on to approve and fund. if this already exist, then correct my misunderstanding. im sure we could do better as a society, but the failure is the system that we continue voting to uphold. dont vilify regular people doing something that most of you have probably done if you ever walked past an old person the had a profuse odor of she-caca emanating from their area of existence. if you havent then your better than most of us and you should be content that you wont have to be around us forever as you are not invited to our reserved special place in hell

"Still that is no way to treat the elderly." Well, ok, what do you think the police should have done? Should the police just ignore him like his caregivers plainly are? How many times do you think they should drive him home just so the family can ignore him and let him wander away yet again? They did that before and it id not work. What do you think they should have done that they did not do over the dozen times they had to deal with him? For the life of me, I can't understand why no one cares about the people at the strip mall who had to put up with the man's abuse or clean his feces off the walls. Yes, that poor man is not to blame but neither are the police for protecting taxpayers from abuse and vandalism.

The sad thing is that the worst thing to do with a person with dementia is to argue or handle them roughly. They get more agitated the more you yell at them. They cannot reason with you. You have to redirect the person and allow them to calm done. You can’t make them understand what you are wanting from them. They are not being defiant on purpose. It’s not personal at all. When my mother got to this point in her dementia, we did not just let her continue her daily routine unsupervised; we kept her safe in public by either a family member or friend that understood what exactly mom was now unaware of at times. It's not incumbent on the Dunkin Donuts, police department or passing stranger to real in your father when he gets extremely confused. We loved mom so deeply that we did not want our mother to experience the confusion and increased heart rate of police contact or someone yelling at her because they didn't understand dementia. Lesson here is not to teach Dunkin Donuts or police how to care for your dad. The lesson is to teach this family it's time to elevate their responsibility to their father and society. She almost got arrested as well one day before the diagnosis, but thank God they didn’t and she was sent to a place to be evaluated to figure out what was going on! That day I drove her to the place and had to leave her there for 7 days! I’ll never forget that day, my heart broke into pieces as I was instructed to leave and told she will be able to call me everyday! As I said goodbye to her, the room she was in had a huge window and I said I love you mama don’t worry I will be back and we’ll talk every day. She stood at the window crying and begging me not to leave her there please! I almost said forget this but I knew it had to happen! That day, it felt like my mama was now one of my young daughters, I felt so guilty leaving her there and prayed she would forgive me! That tore me up for sure. Of course She’s in a better place now, but I’ve never been the same since that day! Those officers that mocked him and were just inconsiderate and mean! Trust!
