My husband and I are looking into adoption right now. We did a kinship foster of a baby last year for 10.5 months. It was so difficult when he went back to his mom but we were really glad that she got sober and completed all the things CPS wanted her to do. Now that we’re just beginning to look into the process of adoption, finding out the different types, and all the costs, it feels like there is a lot to learn and do.

Look into whether you can sign up to foster to adopt. It’s where you are placed with children who won’t be reunited with their biological parents. With this process, you don’t pay to adopt and at least while you are fostering, the government covers the costs. Lots of videos on KZbin about this topic.

If you do foster to adopt you have to accept the possibility that circumstances may change and you may not end up adopting, and you need to be the best foster parents you can be regardless of that.

@@junbh2actually, any child in foster care who is up for adoption is not eligible for reunification with birth parents. Parents lose their rights to custody completely under many circumstances: long term/life imprisonment; extreme abuse; etc. Or they’re simply dead (ie there are real orphans). Yes, there is a sometimes a very, very remote legal chance something will develop legally, where another birth family member will come at the very last minute and sway the court to give them custody before adoption takes place. But, that’s very much the extreme exception.

@@graceg3250as an attorney who represents parents in these proceedings what you are saying is not accurate. There is no possibility after a termination of parental rights hearing is concluded and the parents right is terminated or that parent chose to surrender the child. If none of these things happen then no matter how long the child is in foster care reunification is always possible. I diverted a termination of parental rights proceeding after the child was in foster care for five years and fought for the child’s family to have custody and now the child is in custody of her family and not in foster care. The home the child was in was an adoption resource home.
