Family Talk: Living the Cologne Carnival in Exile. Descendants of Jewish Carnivalists share their family history (29.02.2024)
Since the beginning of the organised Carnival in Cologne, Jews have been part of it. But at the same time, they were excluded from taking part. With the rise of the Nazis, they were more and more radically excluded and persecuted - few were able to flee. Carnivalists such as Hans Tobar and Max Salomon took the carnival with them into exile. Within the diaspora, it was a piece of home. In the second issue of our series „Family Talks“, four descendants of Jewish carnival performers joined the panel to share their ancestors’ stories. Participants on the panel were Vicki Tobar, Lisa Cordaro, Laura Chanin and Susan Heymann.
