More than how it sounds, I've found it's more how it feels when you play on them. I have a cheap $400 usd cello and my teacher has an 1872 french cello. The difference felt right away. My teacher's made my whole body vibrate, not just the cello. Now I'm trying to achieve the same with mine, modifying the bridge and soundpost to maximize vibrations and that pays a lot in sound quality and projection. I know I'll never reach the same quality as a handcrafted and aged cello, but even for studying, it has been even easier to do so.

#1 and #6!! We liked best of all. And the instrument should be "yours". When you get new cello it sounds strange. But the more you play it the more you feel it and it becomes closer to you as your friend or partner. And your instrument feels you, your mood and even physical condition. It's something you can't buy, but deserve due to your devotion and work.

Very well said. And it always takes time to bond with an instrument so it becomes an inseparable part of musician. I love #1 and #6💖

A lot of important items to compare, strings, kind of wood, tailpiece, etc.
@Cellopedia4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Some of these cellos would sound better with proper setup and a new bridge. This time of the year humidity goes down and all of these cellos do not like it.

Hi, you're great like always, but I have a question. I recently rented a new cello and what I noticed is the fact that it was hard to make some sounds on harmonic, like the harmonic A on A string, has some screech sounds, can you please name some factors on why that might happen? Thank you!!!
@Cellopedia4 жыл бұрын
It is quite unusual to have a problem with harmonic A on A string. I am sure you tried to change a distance between a bow and a bridge and check bow angle. Your cello might have an uneven fingerboard or the fingerboard got too close to strings ( it happens between seasons when humidity is changing). All of it might make a string to make a noise. I would check if this cello has cracks open seams... Sorry, so many things could go wrong.
@infinitydk694 жыл бұрын
@@Cellopedia Oh alright, thank you! Now I'm starting to realize that even the A string by itself is starting to make a really loud noise sometimes.

First thing I noticed was how much better all the 4/4 size cellos sound and, of those, the older ones sounded the best. The newer, smaller cellos sounded like they were played inside a box or under water... no resonance, though the 3/4 size modern Chinese cello played toward the end sounded pretty good. Thanks!

There are certainly different sounds and jealousy that sound better than others, but as I said to my teacher, if you touch my cello of 2500 Dollars can make it sound subleme, instead even if I use my teacher's which is 4 times more expensive I can't get the most out of it and sound quality it can offer, wonderful video 😋

Wow what a difference!!! I recently changed from a rented "chinese-like" cello to a rumenian cello fixed by a luthier, and beside the quality difference, I notice it is much easier to play (I.e. with string crossing). Can you do a video with different bows? It would be interesting

This happened to me once I started to adjust and modify my cello's bridge (Don't do so unless you know what you are doing).

Agree. Sometimes we need to do minor adjustments (better with help of a pro). Modifying bridge...better not.

My favorite is the last one, the 4/4 cello 19th century, not the tiny one ;) By the way, many comments mention the setup (strings, bridge, ..) but don't forget the bow! The bow plays a huge part in the sound. Same cello, different bows, huge diffence.
@Cellopedia4 жыл бұрын
I could not agree more ❤️ The bow is so important to me that I had to change it when my sound preferences have changed. I used to have Louis Panormo bow, the same maker as Jacqueline du Pre’s bow. It was an amazing heavy and powerful bow. Now I use very light, thin and fast French bow (maker unknown). Who knows what will come next 😂
