Leonard Cohen himself would appreciate this, the most perfect rendition of Famous Blue Raincoat I’ve ever heard/witnessed. There’s singing a song and there’s ‘getting’ a song. Sammy gets it.

Famous Blue Raincoat" It's four in the morning, the end of December I'm writing you now just to see if you're better New York is cold, but I like where I'm living There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening. I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record. Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair She said that you gave it to her That night that you planned to go clear Did you ever go clear? Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder You'd been to the station to meet every train And you came home without Lili Marlene And you treated my woman to a flake of your life And when she came back she was nobody's wife. Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth One more thin gypsy thief Well I see Jane's awake -- She sends her regards. And what can I tell you my brother, my killer What can I possibly say? I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you I'm glad you stood in my way. If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free. Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes I thought it was there for good so I never tried. And Jane came by with a lock of your hair She said that you gave it to her That night that you planned to go clear -- Sincerely, L. Cohen

How many moments of comfort and joy have your charming, delightful, endearing great-sounding videos given to people all over the world? I don’t know the answer, but it’s a really big number. I don’t think it’s in your nature to be full of yourself (how do I know that?…I suppose I don’t, but I’m sure of it anyway)…but you’ve sure earned the right to be proud of yourself!

I'm a fan of Cohen but this song never meant much to me until I heard you sing it. Then I sampled other versions and I just came back to how perfect yours is. Minimalist, melancholy, and quiet, alone in your room, leaning over your guitar like someone leaning over a letter they were writing. Just perfect.

I, too, am a fan of the Cohen. A deep fan. I listen to his singing of this one and others every now and then. And covers every now and then. And now this by Sammy Copley. Good heavens. Effortlessly she channels Cohen and, yet, finds a tenderness to the disappointment. Stunning.

Sammy. I got a story to tell you. Once, a few weeks back, i fell to sleep while listening to music. These things happen, i know. But just now, in the new year, i got nothing better to do than watch some old series. And in the current episode, the heroine just lost her husband and was running through the woods. And Leonard Cohen sang and i began to cry. And i just knew, i heard this song before. But not from Leonard. But who was it? My first idea was Ane Brun. But she never covered him. My second guess was this little (yet) unknown wonder with the name of sammy. So i searched for this song. And found it. And now i am hearing it for the first time, really. Thank you.
