I have visited Graceland many times....it is atmospheric and it oozes with beauty, history and art. A great short work published by the Chicago chapter of the AIA is entitled "A Walk Through Graceland Cemetery". I highly recommend it.

At the beginning, 0:20-22, in the short distance you can see a black granite bench. That is my gravesite (unused to this point!) I've led many tours through the cemetery over the years because it is so beautiful and a great walk through Chicago history.

I grew up just across the big lake from Chicago, my uncle had several businesses there after WWII. So we spent a lot of time in that city. I never really knew much about the ppl who shaped it so this is wonderful to watch, thank you.

Born and raised in Chicago moved to the suburbs when I was kid. Worked downtown all my life retired now. These men built Chicago and other great people which have had monuments desecrated or taken down.. Most of these men have streets named after them and I even worked in some of their buildings and been in others. I would not take a step into Chicago anymore. It is a very dark place now. Just not what it used to be.

So much history in Chicago. The downtown area is still decent but none of it is the way it once was sadly.

Danial Burnam Island is really cool too. If I remember correctly, the bottom of the small lake/pond was lined with broken up tombstones.

A couple of noteworthy facts: Schöenhofen also invented Green River soda pop. Palmer is credited with the grid system of city streets. He also fought the city all the way to his death to keep the lakefront free of development. Montgomery Ward continued the fight after his death. Louis Sullivan died penniless and an alcoholic. His friends and colleagues paid for that monument.

This is a cemetery I spent a lot of time in riding bicycles during my youthful days in the 1960's, I lived close by. One time us kids found a depression in a grass mound by the Montrose wall. We made the hole larger to see what made the depression. It turned out to be a metal window frame buried over with broken windows in the frame. The earth was escaping into the broken windows making the depression. We dug the grass and dirt out large enough to get our bodies through. It turned out to be a sub terranean masonry restroom, one for men and one for women. Each had a very old pedestal lavatory and a toilet with a high up wall mounted flush tank complete with pull chains.

Great video, I have yet to find a few of these famous tombstones. Am I also the only one who is a little spooked by all the coyote sightings? I’m hoping they really are ghosts, because the idea that packs of wolves are just wandering the streets of Chicago is a lot to bear, hah.

I walk Graceland frequently. Great place to get some exercise while enjoying the landscape. Usually see two or three coyotes during a visit. They do their thing and mind their business. Occasionally, one will trot past me on the pathway, get several yards in front of me, stop and turn around to stare at me, and just continue on its way. I’ve never felt threatened by them.

@@halross3447 The one coyote I’ve seen appears to be pretty mellow. He’s no doubt used to humans and is just waiting for someone to leave snacks, like a cheeseburger or a rabbit :)

There is a coyote den at Graceland; they are groundskeepers of sorts in that they keep the goose population in check.

Why were so many of the great Chicago legends, who I assume lived in downtown, Hyde Park or Pullman neighborhoods, buried in Graceland on the northern edge of Chicago? It makes sense Ernie Banks is buried in Wrigleyville.

Well, except for Kate Warne, this completely ignores the powerful and famous women buried at Graceland. If you want more information about the cemetery, its’ original design and status as the Cemetery of Architects as well as the graves it holds, I would be happy to assist in your edits.
