The Pennsylvania Railroad built this incredible bridge between Weirton, W.VA and Steubenville, Ohio. Although its glory days are over, it still stands and is very impressive.

I visited that area often to see relatives. Funny story about the Veterans Memorial bridge. Ohio was responsible for construction up to the edge of the Ohio river, WV for the rest. It finally came time for the last section to be put into place joining the bridge, but something wasn't right. The bridge was off center by 20 feet! Bridge construction was stopped for a few years. It's been doctored up, but you can still tell when you drive under it. Never hear what state was to blame. Excellent drone footage!

The main span over the river, ignoring the approaches, would scale out to about 8 feet in N scale. What a model that would be!

If you ever get the chance take a ride up to Letchworth State Park in western New York, there is a beautiful new rail bridge over the gorge and waterfalls there that is amazing. Hi DJ, Great video of an impressive Panhandle bridge. Another impressive bridge that spans the Ohio river is just South of Steubenville at Mingo Jct. OH. I'm referring to the former P&WV / N&W now W&LE bridge that crosses the Ohio River, plus the W&LE and NS tracks at Mingo Jct. Talking about the Route 22 Bridge, man I use to hate that old US 22 bridge back in my truck driving days. I hauled a lot of steel coils out of Weirton Steel and any time I had to head West, I had to cross that bridge. It definitely was not built with trucks in mind, here's a short write up of the bridge before it was removed ( www.flickr.com/photos/cmhpictures/6769045013 ) Cheers, Rich S.

You take me back home in a way, in the early 80's I worked on the continuous caster installation at the Wheeling Pittsburgh plant in Mingo Junction or Steubenville South. Crossed the Ohio river every day on the bridge replaced by the Veterans structure. May I suggest for another video that you head down river to Steubenville and see what remains of Mingo Junction. The steel facility is still there and the rail junction appears on Google Maps, however I can't verify if it is producing as I write this. You might want to visit Follensbie WV accross the river too. It appears from Google mapps it is operating. Much larger place than the Monessen coke works, I also worked there too, by the way.

Thank you Domenic for acting on my suggestion to video the bridge. You did a fantastic job! Weirton is my hometown and I grew up looking at that bridge. My late father actually walked across it (not on top) as a boy, shortly after its completion. I have extensively photographed the bridge from a number of vantage points, including the WV side between Pier 1 and the Stone Arch (the pier and the arch date from the 1st bridge; it's stone and sits on a concrete pad). I model the PRR Panhandle Division in O scale. I did not model the bridge to scale (that would be 39.625' !!!!), but my layout does include a proportional version (12') of the bridge, its approaches, and the river. I have a series of articles coming out in O Scale Trains magazine on pouring the river and building the scenery.

I'm an alumni of the nearby Franciscan University of Steubenville. There's been a longstanding tradition going back at least 40 years of students (especially freshmen) going out at night to jump off this bridge into the Ohio river. My freshman year, I was in dorm neighbors with a guy who made the jump over 60 times. He went on after college to join the 82nd Airborne 😆

Easy to access from the WV side. Gravel road off of Freedom Way takes you right up to the tracks. No off-roading or bushwhacking necessary. From what I understand, that stone arch is original to the 1860s (built by Andrew Carnegie), Harmon Creek flowed underneath of it before draining into the river. At some point, the creek was redirected. The pond you can see is referred to locally as catfish pond. There is still daily traffic on the bridge - Norfolk Southern.
@georgepandelios2853
@georgepandelios2853 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I thought the arch might have spanned Harmon Creek at one point in time, but the concrete base upon which it sits is significantly more elevated than the pond. I'm not saying it couldn't be the case, I just don't understand the geography. When would the diversion have occurred? Thanks.

DJ it was great to see you visit my hometown and the place that started my love of trains. Yes I saw that bridge hundreds of times. At one time there were 3 bridges in view. The Fort Steuben bridge was on the other side of the Veteran's Memorial structure. It too, was a beautiful suspension bridge that I remember crossing many times in my youth. My elementary school is right behind where you used your drone on the Ohio side. While everyone else was playing I was waiting for a train to come by and when it did, I could not be pulled inside, after recess, until it was gone. Yes trains still cross the bridge but as you witnessed not much traffic these days. I was a young boy when there were two tracks and probably walked across the bridge at least a half a dozen times. Those were Conrail days. Every time I was petrified but determined. One time a train crossed it while me and a buddy were on it. You could feel the rumble and I literally thought I was going to die. Anyways good memories and good times. Thanks for the visit.

The railtops going over the bridge seem to reflect a lot, making me believe it's still in minor operation. It would be great to see that as a walking/ biking path once the RR is done with it. But I doubt any organization could afford to take over safety inspections & any maintenance of such a large beast. That means the scrap heap someday to avoid it collapsing and blocking the river. Such a shame. Good thing you memorialized it!! 👍

Its really cool to how you're building your layout having the aisle way as the river and the bridge crossing over the aisle. You've done a great job on the building of the bridge as well. Who ever built it knows what they were doing for sure. It looks just like the real one. The rest of the layout captures the look of that area too. The backdrop must be pictures taken of the hill sides because they are too good not to be. Stay well. -Wil 👍

I love that bridge! In the early 1970's my stepdad took me fishing there, about three seasons. Watching Penn central trains on the bridge as well as along the Ohio shore side. Way before the veterans bridge was built. the concrete plant used the shoreline to dump excess concrete and there was very little vegetation back then. That was an excellent place to watch trains and catch huge carp and catfish. One thing I noticed in your shot of the NS train was the short hopper at the front. Was that used as a idler car to protect the engine from being hit by a coil? Seems plausible. Nice video Dom.

It pivots,and there's a great big pier in the river it rests on when open. Would be cool subject for a modeler! I build mainly 1\25 scale semi's trucks. Built a bridge for a buddies dad in middle school but that's about it.

I just moved to the area a week ago, and one thing I've noticed in a lot of my drives are huge covered warehouses/depots/whatever along the river over the tracks in many areas. When you mention that you don't typically see uncovered cars with coils, I wondered if it might be just local delivery between those stations or something. It could explain the slow speed as well?

With railing, of course I would walk across except when a train is running through it due to the intense vibration. I'm sure it gets pretty windy up there too. Little Rock has 3 RR bridges over the AR River and 2 have been converted to pedestrian/bicycle bridges. The city has added LED lighting to the two pedestrian bridges for night effects. I also want to say one of the MS River bridges in Memphis, TN converted a double track to a single and the other track replaced with a pedestrian so you could walk right beside a train on the bridge. I know that would be a haul of a road trip for you but could be some really cool drone footage. Great video as always to help us with scenery!

If you DO decide to walk across, you DON'T want to climb the superstructure to do it. Walk the deck, which is just fine. There are places where the handrails on top have come loose and are dangling. Plus you are at least 120' above the water.

The engines on the Norfolk Southern train you saw are SD60Es. They may be wide bodies now, but they weren't always wide bodies. They were actually set up for long hood forward operation when they had their original standard cabs.

That NS line under the bridge, the River line, used to be double tracked all the way to Yellow Creek, where it meets the Cleveland and Pittsburgh mainline. There was even a tower protecting that junction, Yellow Creek tower, as late as the Penn Central and early Conrail days. There was also a third bridge upstream of the current US 22 bridge, known as the Fort Steuben bridge. It carried US 22 from the middle 1920s until the current bridge was finished after long construction delays with faulty materials.

Great video. Not too much further from you is B&O Great Stone Viaduct, crosses from Bellaire, OH to Benwood, WV just South of Wheeling. It was in the movie "Unstoppable". Would love to see your drone footage of it. There is an abandoned toll bridge in the same area that looks like it could collapse at any moment.

Based on my time at Armco Steel, now AK Steel, now unknown by Erie Cliffs, those coils were most likely uncovered because they weren't finished steel. The ends of the coils were rounded like tongues, meaning those are straight from the hot mill, converted from slabs to rolls. If they had been run through the A&P (anneal and pickle) lines, or the cold mills, they'd have square cut ends. Certainly not very efficient to be moving them from one plant to who knows where else via rail, but I'm happy to see them moving. At Butler Armco at least we kept everything in house, and moved it via crane inside the buildings. Great catch none the less though!

The view at 6:40 is really neat. The combination of the old bridge and the new bridge in view at the same time from that perspective is kind of magical. If you are gonna do more bridge drone shoots, the massive bridge between Monaca and Beaver would be a good one.

This through truss bridge, of this design is known as a "continuous" truss, as it appears to be a single structure, all of it supported on four piers, as one structure. Had this bridge been of a "simple" truss design very likely there would be one more pier, sunken into the middle of the river, thus, making it a four span through truss bridge, being supported over five piers. By utilizing a "continuous" design the railroad was able to support it with one less pier, using longer spans, etc. The two bridges spanning the Cape Cod Canal, up here in New England (the Bourne and the Sagamore Bridges), while they resemble an arch bridge design, are technically of a "continuous" truss design, being supported over four bridge piers, with its middle section rising up and its deck suspended by cables (so to provide the 135 foot clearance needed for very large marine vessels floating through this canal). On both ends those are the approach spans, utilizing expansion gaps in the decking so to separate the middle portion from the two end sections.
