I just realized, seeing them back-to-back, "High Plains Drifter" and "High Noon", are also tied together with the plot of a group of bad men coming to towns that are either too greedy or too cowardly to stand up to them.

I think the Searchers with John Wayne is definitely the ultimate revenge western. There was a strong implication that Ethan Edwards was in love with his brothers wife, Martha, and I think the basis of his searching for the Comanches to exact revenge had more to do with Martha being murdered that it was his searching for Debbie.

Once Upon A Time In The West along with The Searchers and Shane is on the Best Westerns of All Time list of most experts.I think it was Fonda’s best role

Here are some overlooked “Revenge Westerns. No particular order except number one..” 1: Once Upon A Time In The West. 2: 2 Flags West ( criminally underrated). 3: The Oklahoma Kid.( Best Western wedding scene: Judge Donald Crisp to James Cagney. “Do you take this woman?” Before Cagney could speak. Rosemary Lane: “He will take me whether he likes it or not.”). 4: Coroner Creek ( maybe the most underrated Randolph Scott western). 5: The Badlanders ( maybe the most underrated Alan Ladd Western). 6: 6 Black Horses. 7: Saddle The Wind. 8; Angel & The Badman 9: Last Train From Gun Hill ( arguably Kirk Douglas’s best western). 10: The Furies: ( never discussed when going over Anthony Mann classic westerns ( but it should be)).

Nevada Smith was a strange film. I preferred it to The Carpetbaggers ( which was actually a sequel to Nevada Smith). But Alan Ladd ( as an older Smith) nailed the role in a way Steve McQueen could not approach.

Once Upon A Time In The West. Of course, GBU had Tuco getting revenge on Blondie for leaving him in the desert, and then Blondie getting revenge on Tuco. For a Few Dollars More had Mortimer seeking revenge on Indio. And Bill in Death Rides a Horse was seeking revenge for the murder of his family. So maybe the Italians did revenge best.

Just about all revenge westerns are violent and entertaining. Cat Ballou was a hoot. Lee nailed it and got rewarded.

I was thinking of One Foot In Hell. I chose the Badlanders instead because I preferred it. Mitch was Definitely Ladd’s nastiest character: Phillip Raven ( This Gun For Hire) included.

All good films. There are still a lot if good revenge westerns out there for a part 2 and 3. Euro-westerns - such as One Upon A Time in the West, Death Rides a Horse, Django, A Bullet for Sandoval.
