In this video, we're addressing the recent debacle where a fan tried to kiss Suga and then asked the Stray Kids' Felix to act like a cat. We're asking the question: what do artists owe their fans?
This video is for anyone who's ever been a fan of an artist and been left feeling frustrated or upset. We're discussing the idea that celebrities are people just like you and me, and that they deserve to be treated with respect. So what do we do when fans act like jerks?

We pay for the songs, entertainment and what they choose to share, not for their private moments. Honestly, I was pleased to hear BTS thank fans for not making a fuss when they were seen during their vacation in Hawaii. They were guiding fans to understand what behavior they appreciate, what they think is good manners and acceptable.

I’m in Hawaii and didn’t stalk them. There is still a thrill passing by somewhere BTS sat down to eat, ordered food, or caught a bus and thinking they were actually there in person. One area is like 1/2 block from my house and I pass by it every day. So thrilling that they were in my ‘hood!

I expect an artist to give their all in a live show, cannot stand lip syncing and think that is very wrong to do when they are charging their fans a lot of money to see them in their live concert. I expect a real, live show. If the artists are all around, sing and dance, I expect a full on show. If the artist is one of those that can only sing, but not really dance, I expect them to really sing. The live chats they do, fan signs, I think those are bonuses for their fans, I don't feel they are required to do that, think it's great when they do that. If they choose to take requests for singing specific songs, they choose to even better, but if not, at least the fan got to see and chat with them. I expect the artist, once off the platform, whether it be an actual stage, or live chat show, to be left alone, given privacy. I don't think the artist owe the fans anything except their all on their live concerts, they have and are already working so hard behind the scenes to bring a great show, great album, share extra through live chats. My own personal opinion, but once they leave the platform, they are a private citizen and should be given that space and time to live their life off the platform. They are human beings doing their job. It would be like asking you to perform your job 24/7, with perfection, adhering to your boss/companies rules, requests 24/7. Everyone has different personalities, one work personality and one "real" personality, they have to to keep a job, because not everybody gets along, but they do things to keep their job, act professional, once they're off the clock, they do what they want, so why not understand that once an artist is off the clock/platform, they're people, give them their space and time. Thank you for sharing, as always I enjoy your shared comments and thoughts.

Totally agree a 100% performance is expected for paid live performance. Agency needs to limit the show to avoid burnout. This would protect the artist as well as the Fans

Here is what I expect: Live means the artist will be there in person. If it’s a soloist that sings and does lots of intense choreography, I would not be surprised if some parts of the performance is lip syncing. It’s a lot to ask of one person to sing, dance, and perform for two hours or more. I think it’s unreasonable to think an artist would perform a song on request unless they ask for requests and they should not get slack for declining a request. I feel concerts are shows that the artist plans ahead to showcase their music and artistry, also interact with fans. I have seen artists do several performances on the same tour. (Like PTD LA/ Vegas 6X ) There is not a lot of differences between shows except for certain parts where the setlist varies for a song or two where a the artist performs predetermined songs. I am ok with this. I appreciate all the thought and planning that goes into the show from setlist, choreo, lighting, pyrotechnics, costumes, etc. The experience as a whole is what I admire. Other than releasing music and going on tour if they want to, I don’t expect anything else from musical artists. Everything else they do is an unexpected plus, I am grateful to artists that go above and beyond.

Maybe they don't have enough time to take requests when they've planned their set list. Now if they've left a space for interaction with the fans and are open to taking a song request they can say that. But we shouldn't be asking really unless the artist says 'This is your time to request a song'. If an artist falls sick or has an accident on set that means they can't perform then they'll have to postpone or cancel if they can work around the situation/adapt then they should feel able to do that. Like when Jin sat and sung didn't take part in dancing when his hand was in that cast thing he couldn't have it accidently bumped for instance. If someone's voice isn't 100% they might not be able to reach a certain note in a song so it's ok not to sing that note either don't sing it or harmonise it with one you can manage that will blends nicely. Been there done that. As you want your voice to get back to normal asap and still be able to perform well. Choreo is better left out if the artist is having problems or adapted to make it easier. There are things an artist can do and that all come's with experience. As for asking certain questions the artist has every right to say 'sorry but no' The also have the right to explain why it's not appropriate if the fan appears young and might not realise what they are requesting it not polite etc.

I agree with your points. I don't think it is bad if a fan sees their artist in public to ask for a photo/signiture. But this should never be desturbing like in conversations, resataurants or while they are with private friends/ family. AND the artist always has his/her right to say 'no' without be called unpolite. I also think it is okay, if flight-dates are public to wait for arrival (even though I would never do it) but in no way it is okay to chase them until they reach their cars.... But what I expect further on is a part of responsobility. A lot of artist are role-models, well Idols, and sometimes I struggle seeing them consuming a lot of alcohol or some other behavior. I don't think they can't drink in shows but sometimes it is to "normal" or "cool" to not influance young people.

Idols owe fans quality performances and great music that is all . They're private lives should be theirs period. I am related to two celebrities and it is a shame how little privacy they have. It is painful when you can't go places w your family and have peace, it is downright unfair.

I select the groups I follow by listening carefully to their songs. I care far less about what they look like. I am an older fan so I am much less swayed by beauty or even less by sex appeal. I am uncomfortable seeing certain costumes, so I avoid watching groups that wear them. My primary focus is on lyrics, sound and delivery and sweetness/caring. I have a problem hearing certain pitches or notes so I follow mostly boy groups, and only listen to women with deeper tones. I appreciate these idols who work so hard and really put out good 'products'.

I’m an older fan too and I agree. Some performers are really sexualised and wear revealing outfits and it makes me uncomfortable. I’m there for their talent first and foremost. I don’t think they owe us details about their private lives unless they choose to share them. I think some fans are too demanding and delulu and should leave the artists alone.

I wish the artists would schedule these events with a bit more of an in between break sometimes. What's the sense of running yourself into the ground early instead of pacing yourself for the long race?

I would look at it as any other service industry - say the restaurant industry. You pay for the food and the service (music and performance). If you like it - you visit again (buy more), recommend it (shout-outs) and tip generously (buy merch). You may even become a regular (stan). Everything may not always be perfect but you expect a level of consistency and care in return for being a loyal customer (fan). People will also have a higher standard for famous and established restaurants (artists). People may ask for something off-menu (off the set-list) but that is something extra. It could derail the running of the kitchen (show), they may lack the ingredients (could be difficult to do impromptu) or it may go against policy (contract issues or they may not be up for it). So the restaurant (artist) ought to be entitled to refuse the request. I don't think it's rude to ask or rude to refuse. People would of course appreciate them for going the extra mile, but it is extra and not what is owed. Although some requests would be ridiculous - like asking for pizza at a sushi restaurant (requesting another artist's song). So the customer (fan) needs to be appreciated but is also expected to act within accepted social behaviour. Although they will grin and bear a lot as a business in the service sector, they can kick out (call out) people who are outright disrespectful, creepy and obnoxious. People can have a lapse in judgement and they need to learn boundaries & basic human decency. With artists and also in general. But there is a lack of decency and then there is outright criminality - Forcing a kiss on someone is SA. Trespass on the person is battery. Stalking is a crime. Sending unwanted gifts is harassment. Taking someone against their will is kidnapping. Even the apprehension of being harmed itself is considered assault. Cyber-flashing (unsolicited visual content) is harassment and is even being specifically criminalized in various countries (along the lines of indecent exposure). I think somewhere between discussions of appropriate fan behaviour, it gets lost that these are actual crimes.

I think it is bizarre that anyone thinks they have a right to more than they paid for. What is being sold to you is a product. If you buy cereal, do you feel you have the right to change the art on the box or even have say in the box's appearance? Should you have any sway in telling the supplier how to brand or change their recipe? If you buy an album you are not buying the artist, you are buying the right to listen to their songs legally. If you buy a concert ticket you are paying for admittance to a safe environment to listen to that artist perform. Your money spent on an artist is does not give you special rights of any kind. I understand that there are expectations of levels of performance. But that is where the line should be drawn. They are all people who wanted to share their talent with you. Many of them have had to give up their ability to lead a normal free life to do so. All they are asking is some kindness and respect. It doesn't cost anything to give it to them.
@isiseungella4688

Communication is key so it might be helpful if the artist would start eg a fan meet with stating they will or not sing and might or not chose amongst requests) but asking them to "perform" is not appropriate, even for an actor. Likewise their privacy should be respected and outside their public time, a nod of the head and a smile, a mouthed "thank you" from afar or a bow should be plenty if it does not interrupt the flow of their life and no reply should be expected. There are small coastal towns in Australia where Hollywood stars come to live and they are treated as average citizens, expected to line up at the bakery and ignored if they want to have a run on the beach. That's as it should be imho: a healthy individual with a stable "normal" life is more likely to give a better performance imho. We trade money for songs or performance, not for slavery of living a certain way.

I think once you become a public figure there needs to be information shared and respected. This information becomes a sort of verbal contract between the public figure and admirers & detractors. Anything outside this agreement would be reviewed from a security perspective in real time. The problem I have with crazy sasang’s is that they could end up in a traditional jail rather receiving the psychiatric treatment they need to re-enter society. Part of the problem is that social media has facilitated a new way of communicating without regulation or defined norms. Would you find it interesting to do a thought piece on where the USA and RSK are different considering the framework and foundations are the same? Maybe you could do it from the point of view of K-POP? I love your style and most of your content.

I agree that the creepy fan behaviors are all over the most of the world. If you look at it historically it’s not really a new behavior but with today’s technology, social platforms, and also the drastic decline in core values of decency and appropriate behaviors it’s all seems creepier. I absolutely hate the “shipping “ contents because the content creators do it for their own selfish agenda and nothing else. True fans don’t lie, inference, make things up and ask to subscribe.

I do expect a proper concert for the price. But, some fans have crossed the line with their expectations. They have me questioning their age (are they 10) to question their mental health (they got to be crazy). All I know is life happens and like all humans they get sick. Has nothing to do with them over working themselves. Like when Jhope then Jimin got COVID. During rehearsal, Jin got hurt. Their live performances are live singing. Dancing at the same time is very exhausting. They should take breaks during the concerts and interact with the fans and let the fans know them even better. Honestly though sum fans take it too far (rude rich brats clueless to reality). Shoving their cameras in celebrities faces while they're trying to have dinner. Or "you're not wearing makeup. You look better with the makeup." Couldn't imagine saying that to anyone. Some parents are clueless to what their kids are actually doing online. Adults also don't play with dolls either. Being sweet and cute is fine but they shouldn't be expected to embarrass or humiliate themselves. They try and say that the average age of BTS fans is 24 yrs old. Guess there's some girls out there that need to grow up if that's the case. Luckily BTS has an ARMY and for what I can tell, they seem to be mature and have a higher mentality than just a stan. Which is awesome.✌️🫶

I expect a live show. If the artist sings, sing live. If they dance, dance well. Etc. I think there is definitely room for if they are injured or sick to make amendments or changes to the performance (especially on tour where you can't plan for everything) but I would hope they would be up front about it and not try to pass it off as normal. For example, BTS has performed well while sick, but when injuries happen, sometimes a member has to sit aside, but can still sing. Both of these are ok. They know their limits and choose which option is better, while respecting the fans. I think it's fine for fans to request a song. And fine for the artist to either sing it or not. But if the artist is going to refuse, they should do it respectfully. "I'm sorry, but we don't have time for that," or "sorry, my throat isn't up for another song right now," is very different from, "I'm not singing that stupid song." It is about respect both ways. Fans should respect the artist, and the artist should respect the fans. But I'm a little confused too. Your intro and conclusion seem like they're for a video on training, while the rest of the video is on expectations and boundaries between fans and artists? I'd like to see the video on training too sometime. Thanks for another good video. 💜
