There are more but I'll share two of the things that I've found help me when organizing. decluttering, purging, etc. 1. I take pictures of things I feel some sentimental attachment to and keep a "keepsakes" picture folder on my laptop. Things like baby/kids clothes or toys that were favorites of mine or the kids' or special, or anything in the house really, and it makes it easier to give/sell/donate them and picture storage space is so negligible. 2. Although I sometimes do make lists to check off, I guess for my personality I've found that if I simply do things and write a "list of accomplishments" vs a list of "to do's", it motivates me to write down or do a phone note as I go or every so often while working so I can look at the list and be motivated by the accomplishments instead of maybe feeling like I didn't accomplish what I wanted to on a list. I also find that I add a lot more things because you inevitably do lots of random stuff you hadn't planned on accomplishing on to do list. It does take time to keep a record of it but it is incredibly motivating and while you write it can also help you form a "to do" guide of things you handy thought of or things you need to buy at a store or thrift store, etc. to help with organization as you decanter, etc. :)

At age 66 my decluttering has just begun. Definitely not trying to do it all in one weekend or week or month. I’m trying to be realistic about it. I’ve made numerous trips with my car packed to the max to donate items. There are some happy thrift store shoppers around our area right now, and I’m happy to have so many things out of my house. Reducing the stress and working on welcoming guests here.

I am 70 and started this past June. I have donated 80% of my "stuff." I took it one room at a time and just took it one wall at a time, i.e. this kitchen wall has the washer and dryer coset, so I took on that. Happily that only took less than a day and I started on the next wall which had a closet and shelf unit. It is wonderful, peaceful home now. Clean up quick and easy. Chores ( laundry, cleaning, etc) are quick and easy because drawers and closets not stuffed. You'll love the feeling of space. My apt seems so much bigger!

I want to do this because I'm 36 and tired of pretending I can emotionally punish myself out of being a messy person. I'm a messy person. No matter how bad I make myself feel about it, no matter how many times I promise myself to tidy for 20 minutes a day. I'm a messy person. And the ONLY way to stop that from snowballing (into massive visual clutter and consequently mental overwhelm) is by having less stuff (out). I need to deal with who I am, not who I wish I was!

My "why" has multiple facets. I wanted to be able to have guests or people drop by without feeling guilty about how the house looked. Also not having to spend 2 days to move things from the guest room so someone could spend the night. My other "why" is that my daughter is grown and I do not want her to have an overwhelming amount of items to go through once her dad and I are gone. Been there done that and I minimize for her.

I started decluttering my home in 2017. I started with my own closet and moved through the house decluttering my personal belongings. Then I moved into common areas like the kitchen & livingroom. Then a year ago, I started working with family members on their belongings in the house. I lead by example first and asked for their commitment once they saw the positive outcomes of a simplified & minimal space. Now we have a series of small habits done daily that keep spaces simplified and minimal. I am now looking for next level decluttering ideas & tricks....

I try to declutter a little bit at a time, but this weekend I have a project. I have a storage crate, where I'm going to declutter and organize my "overstock" food. Then I'm going to declutter and organize my linen clothes. That's where my linens, and first aid, and some extra cleaning stuff is. Now I'm going to organize it, and add my extra hand sanitizer and wipes. Yes, I know it sounds weird declutter/minimalize/organize/overstock, but as a wife and mom of 3 + 2 extras (3 households), where we are essential workers, and the hubby works in healthcare, I have to be safe and careful with everything. Plus, even grown kids think they have enough but have to call mom for extra toilet paper every now and then.

I was doing awesome with all of that when I lived in a house. I moved from a 4 bedroom house into a 1 bedroom apartment in a big city. I got rid of probably 70% - 80% of everything I owned, and now after downsizing I constantly battle clutter. I don't think I am ready to declutter even more right after I literally only kept the most loved and most useful items. I do find decluttering the house way easier than decluttering small apartments. There are all those useful spaces where you can keep your organized stuff. A mud room? A laundry room? A pantry? Sure sounds nice to me. However, I am now really down to bare bones, and it is a bit difficult although I absolutely love where I live. I sure hope to be able to take advantage of it more when the pandemic is over.

I struggle with some of the same things you do. I find picking out a few EASY things works best to ease your way in as painlessly as possible. Do you have any trash around your house? If yes, get your trash can and go around looking ONLY for trash. Then take the trash out, and reward yourself in some way. What's the next easiest thing you could do? Preferably a smallish area that's very visible, so when you're done, looking at it frequently will make you feel good and help motivate you to do others.

I have a cluttered home most of the stuff is my dad’s and my deceased grandmother’s. As I moved into her house while she was alive. He won’t let me get rid of stuff that is not needed. And it is really frustrated. I am feeling so overwhelmed. He knows I love puzzles next thing he has brought in about 10 puzzles that I will never be able to get to. And no place to put them. I lack a lot of space and if he would get rid of his things that are not needed or broken etc then I would feel so much better. Oroblem is my parents do not treat me like an adult. They treat me like a child and refuse me to move their stuff but I am only one that lives in this house. But I cannot get it the way I want it because my father will not listen to me and it is exhausting. So I cannot remove or touch anything He says for his own cluttered house “I’m working on it” but it is worse then I ever saw it it is squeezing them in their own house

I'd take one room & pack as much of the broken unfixable garbage into it as possible. Stack the boxes 4-5 feet high if need be. Take another room, or part of the same room, & pack into it what's not needed but donatable. Label the boxes so stuff can be retrieved if necessary. Then live your life in the remaining space. Point is, your hoarder dad and mom may be able to guilt or manipulate you into keeping the stuff till they die, but you can make it a fait accompli that you don't need to live with everything right where grandma left it. You can creatively stack the unwanted furniture to the ceiling if you don't need to be in that room or sit on it, etc. Efficient use of the space you have could make all the difference to how you feel and live in that place day to day. It's also possible that after a few years in the boxes, your father will no longer remember or ask for any of the stuff that's been packed away, and you can discreetly discard some. But that is for later. The first priority is to render your main space more livable. Please accept my sympathies on dealing up close with this problem. I have a pair of hoarder friends whose apartment was damn near unusable up till a couple of years ago. They wouldn't even let anyone in the door for a long time. When we did get in, it took quite a while to throw out enough stuff to make the kitchen, hallway, bathroom, and living room habitable and get two proper beds in there (the 89-year-old mom had been sleeping on a stool in the kitchen). The bedroom is still an unwalkable horror, but at least two rooms are absolutely usable, and they can spend time together instead of isolated in two nests. The mother still sometimes gets paranoid and demands we find certain things she's certain we threw out. In most cases we never saw the item: it may still be in the bedroom for all we know, or gone twenty years. There was a memorable fight over a couple of replaced and discarded lampshades. But we did our level best to preserve everything of sentimental or practical value, and I think we mostly succeeded in showing enough care and good will that they understood we were in no way trying to deprive them of anything that would make a difference. At least, they haven't changed the locks since they gave us the keys! :)

My whole room is cluttered. Its a bit overwhelming. I would like to start with my dresser and the two tables next to it. What do you recommend to begin this challenge?

What a GREAT place to start!!! I recently did a video about how to declutter without making a mess...it might be helpful! Hugs!

Anyone have tips for decluttering wedding cards? I feel bad throwing them away, but I know I probably won't ever look at them! And they just make me feel quilts every time I see them because I never finished all of the thank you notes!

Either have a last look at them, and remember the happiness they brought you, then get rid of them, or maybe just take a few pics of your favourites. You could even have some printed as a photo book or a poster using a company like Snapfish. I’m currently decluttering birth and christening cards and my children are now 12;and 15!

If you have a place where you keep cards and notes, like a binder, it can be really nice to save your favorites and most special ones there!! I always throw away cards that don't have anything personal written on them, too.

Thank you both so much!! I really like both of your book ideas-either getting a binder for the actual cards or making a book with photos of the cards! I also love the freedom it gives me to hear other people say its okay to get rid of them! 😂

My basement is full full 35 years of stuff and every box or bag has all different things in them. I have 3 generations of stuff as a 65 year old woman I do not want to leave my home like this to my one and only Son.

My eldest moved out. She moved into the next town house from mine, with her fiancee. The dirty bugger left 90% of her junk in her old room!! *Grrrrrr 🤣

Mine did thus, too. They have no storage or closet space in their new apartments. I just left their closet as is.

@@ljr7956 - Oh man, it took me about 2 weeks to box it all up. BUT they DO have the room & it's all at her house now! I have a spare room for the holidays now. WOOHOO!

I have no words. Being a mother and a pet owner is an absolute privilege. She should face life in prison just for what she did to Boomer. Those poor sweet children :(
