The difference between the judging in 2017 and 2023 is remarkable. It seemed like the judges back then cared about advancing the sport by rewarding the youngest and strongest who were (and still are) sacrificing their knees and bodies to pull off unbelievable aerial moves. That said, I think both John John's alley-oop and Mick Fanning's 8.93 (his second three maneuver wave) were over-scored by at least a point, maybe two in Fanning's case. I don't see any incentive for these young rippers in 2023 to pull off these incredible sport advancing aerials if the judges are going to score power surfing higher (and don't get me wrong, I love watching quality power surfing). Don't suffer the plethora of major injuries that are more likely to happen launching huge airs in your WCT heat. Stay connected to the wave. Perfect your power surfing routine. Save your airs for the final. The WCT is not instructing their judges on the proper scoring criteria, and it's hurting the evolution of surfing. Gabriel was more or less correct in his recent rants on social media about the disparity in judging at the Surf Ranch contest, despite the fact that he came across as a sore loser.
