Fanny and Alexander Episode 1

Filmen utspelar sig i Uppsala under åren 1907--1909 och kretsar kring den förmögna familjen Ekdahl som domineras av en rik och begåvad änka samt hennes tre söner. Äldsta sonen Oscar driver tillsammans med sin hustru Emelie den lokala och familjeägda teatern. Paret har tillsammans två barn: Fanny och Alexander.
Då Oscar drabbas av en för tidig död, gifter sig Emelie med biskopen i staden och flyttar med barnen till hans spartanska och stränga hem. Ett helt nytt liv väntar Fanny och Alexander och vi får följa dem och övriga familjen genom sorg och glädje, ljus och mörker.

I've always preferred the original uncut version. A much richer experience and so worthwhile. For me, that is Bergman's true masterpiece.

I watched the theatrical version with my dad this christmas. Afterwards I wasn't really sure how I should react to it. At first I found it a bit strange and dreary but interestingly enough not boring. Now, 3 days later, I've realized I liked it. A lot! So much that I've ordered the blu-ray version which contains the extended version in addition to the shorter movie version. I realize I could just watch it on KZbin, but I'd rather have this in my collection.

These 4 episodes are different from the normal version movie. I thank you so much for this. I always wanted to watch all the episodes ( I knew the original project was 6 episodes for TV), but I never found them. Fanny och Alexander is a wonderful movie, a flowing image of a childhood, poetic and cruel, it simply tells the truth about life, and the magic within. it's the closest thing I have aver seen to À la recherche du temps perdu. thanks again for posting this!

i love the four part version of "Fanny och Alexander" even more than the theatrical release... some of my favorite parts were edited out for the movie version which really is a shame since as far as I know there is no region 2 DVD of the complete "Fanny & Alexander" (i have the 3 h, 1 min version on Reg 2).

Liv Ullman, whom the writer had in mind for Emilie, the mother of Alexander, thought this part was too sad, and turned it down. And later she said that it was the one part she regretted not taking. Liv Ullman worked with Ingmar Bergman in several films, and i am surprised that she turned this film down. She is 14 years older than Ewa Froling who took the part,. I always remembered thinking that the actress seemed young, a bit young to be Alexander's mom, even though they did marry young, and also, young for her husbands, who are all easily old enough to be her fathers. Even though some young women really like older men, I did have a bit of trouble with the age, especially as I had a hard time seeing what she saw in the bishop, being so young looking and so gay, full of life.

Many thanks Lynda !:I saw this wonderful Swedish Film just after it was released on a 35 mm Projection System. It had an Eng Overdup. The Colours were so. spectacular and the drama so powerful that it has stayed with me. A friend in Stockholm told me this film depicted The Old Sweden ? Would you be kind enough to let me know what historic time frame the film is representing ? I am presenting that it is around late 1890's ? love rediscovering this film so much as it is one of my favorites, plus having seen it several times so i do not even care that i cannot understand swedish . it's been long enough that it's wonderful to see it again, having forgotten many details, but i know the plot and remember many lines distinctly so I do not need the subtitles. i even remember details like when the older matriarch tells the housekeeper that she is always grumpy at christmas, and the housekeeper calls her an "old bitch" behind her back 😀😀😀

Originally, Fanny and Alexander were planned to have an older sister, Amanda, but the character was left out of the film. She does, however, appear in a book Bergman wrote, based on the screenplay (but she doesn't add much to the story).

i read that the part of the mother, Emilie, was written for Liv Ullman who is a bit older and she turned down the part. i always thought the actress who plays the Emilie seems barely old enough to be Alexander's mother, so it makes sense that the older sister was written out especially if she did not move the plot. I remembered often thinking that the character if Emilie had to be an awfully young baby mama ☺️
