Yeah. Instead of parking them away until their lease ran out like Amtrak did because of mechanical problems, they renovated them.

They decided to do rebuilds instead of getting new locos. Can't say I'm surprised, MARC have always been confusing cheapskates.

@@trashrabbit69 - These are, in fact, AMTRAK employees - as AMTRAK crews operate the MARC trains - except for two - and I am still wondering where they wound up - they all are in MARC livery; two of them are in MDOT livery - I saw both in Ivy City in 2000 - did the B&O Museum get them?

Awesome catches! I keep forgetting that Amtrak shortened the Northeast Corridor consist to 7 (Minus the one train at 16:21 which had 8). Not too much of a big deal but it is pretty odd now that I think about it.

The HHP-8s were unreliable and expensive to maintain. The ACS-64s are far superior, and since Amtrak now has a standardized fleet of only a single type electric locomotive (and sharing some parts with the SC-44s), the maintenance is MUCH cheaper.

Well Amtrak didn’t scrap them. They have just been parked up until the lease runs out. There are rumors from Bombardier that Amtrak have been using them for spare parts but who knows. Sad nonetheless.

Amtrak hasn’t scrapped them, they’re only stored. However some were reportedly cannibalized for parts which resulted in a lawsuit.

Hopefully in September I will get to come up to Halethorpe - and not JUST for the trains. (Mom's Organic Market has their regional roasting operation at the Halethorpe store - which is two blocks' walk fro this station. The chain purchases from Rockville, MD-based Mayorga Organics, but they have their own branded coffee - both whole-bean and fresh-ground - all of which is roasted in Halethorpe. I purchase the "Witches' Brew" whole-bean because I have my own blade grinder - which I use to grind two-cup and four-cup microbatches for my own drinking. No; Starbucks is NOT to blame for my preference of grind-my-own; the military - specifically the United States Navy - is. (If you work in a split office with a master chief petty officer, you WILL discover whether or not he knows about how to brew traditional United States Navy coffee - strong enough to wake the dead - and I worked in just such a place - in north Arlington VA - two blocks from Kettler Iceplex, in fact - it's still there today.) This was BEFORE I had even HEARD of Starbucks; but between Starbucks and Mayorga, I grew to appreciate freshly-brewed AND freshly-ground coffee - and Mom's Organic Waldorf - my local store - is where I get mine - in their thematic "bee bags" - Waldorf has an apiary on the store roof; hence their bags have "bee graphics". "Witches' Brew" is meant to be finely ground, and brewed at the "military strength" setting - it is not for the weak.
