Someone else pointed this out & I thought it was interesting: In the show, the apocalypse began in 2003 when George W. Bush was President (as we saw in Episode 1), which means gay marriage wasn't legal in the U.S. yet. So, theoretically 1 additional reason why Bill & Frank chose to live on their own instead of the Boston QZ was because they were a gay couple & they might have been discriminated against for that.

What made this relationship of Bill and Frank hit even harder for me is that outbreak happened in 2003. The first state didn’t legalize gay marriage until 2004, and it wouldn’t be considered legal in all states until 2015. You have here two men never imagining to find someone else like them in a broken world. Then living their lives with each other and marrying in the end considering it wasn’t made legal but they wanted their love to be eternal even after death. I could cry at how beautiful it is.

Thing I loved from this episode was just the quote, "I like you older. Older means we're still here." These were men who grew up during the AIDS epidemic, which is a lot for a guy like Frank who seems pretty open and out, even if Bill had never been with a man. There is an entire generation of gay people who were lost during that period. Folks who didn't get to grow old. In this world gay marriage never made it to the point where it was the law of the land across the US, the world fell apart 10 years too soon. But these two guys got to grow old together. Happy. Living life and leaving life on their own terms. It's a rarity and a blessing a lot of guys their age just didn't get to have. Really beautiful episode. Sucks there are so many people out there who don't see love for what it is, not a political statement, just love.

I'm late to this game, but you are spot on. These people who are so hateful and freaking out over anyone else finding love that does nothing to impact said hater's life...pathetic, sad and worthy of no acknowledgement. Unfortunately there are a lot of them. No wonder we as humanity haven't evolved. Too many of us are fueled by hate for people who are "different" even if it doesn't affect our own lives. We as humans apparently just need to blame "others" for everything.

Sadly, there are plenty of people who bashed this episode just because the show was "pushing an agenda" down their throats with Bill and Frank. From those who said in the game it's only hinted they are a couple to those who just outright hate the show showing a gay couple growing old together in love. If this literally didn't show those people that ANYONE can fall in love, be in love, and grow old together (and well I guess die together in the show's lore) and they happen to be two men, I'm not sure what else can be said to those people. This was a perfect way to show two people falling in love etc. Trust me, there are way more people who are accepting and supportive than those who would deny existence itself let alone hate.

Not gonna lie, I'm very thankful with the writers telling a deeper story of love than the game shows. Allowing their audience to be moved that much with a love story between two men makes me have a little more faith in humanity. I love the subtleties in the writing here. It draws a parallel with Joel and Bill, as both being survivalists, willing to do what ever is necessary to survive. My read was that just like Joel, Bill also did some shady stuff before he ran into Frank, which is why his read on Joel during the garden party was the way it was. He saw himself in Joel being like he was before he met Frank, surviving without purpose. Which is why in his letter he is telling him to find his purpose of loving and protecting those around him, so Joel can really live like he got to. Even if it means his eventual demise.

The acting was good sure, but the writing wasn't, it was filled with plot contrivances. Bill and Franks relationship was incredibly forced. I mean you mean to tell me that after the outbreak Bill has been totally alone for years. He hasn't come across a single person, and the first person he meets after years of being alone just so happens to be another gay man? Like come on, that is silly. If Frank was a part of a large group that Bill encountered that would be a different story. Also Bill, the paranoid survivalist turns his back to this random guy he just met to play the piano? Not even considering the possibility that this guy could try to kill him and take over his town?

Played the game years ago. I didn't like the episode and I even doubted the necessity for the expansion of Bill's storyline, but now I think I got how this will pay off for the finale. Henry and Sam will be on next and what happens there will also be a big influence to Joel about what he wants or don't want. I don't think there was any better way to put the point across to the audience in this passive medium but to show Bill and Frank's latter life. So I now give this episode two thumbs up. The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've been conditioned through modern storytelling to fear everything, especially the benign, the innocuous, especially in this particular genre of horror, so when we encounter a story about caring and trust and commitment, we don't know how to process it; it hits hard. 'I was not expecting this' seems to be the most common refrain. This is a series about a 'zombie apocalypse' where anyone and everyone can go from being a loved one to a mortal threat in an instant and yet this particular episode is about love, matrimonial and romantic; a masterpiece. This is one of the best stories ever told on film, in my opinion and it's based on a video game. We've come a long way from Pong.

I absolutely love watching these reactions. Can't put my finger on exactly why. I usually watch the more nerdy shows alone (my wife doesn't care for them too much), so I guess its like someone else is enjoying them with me and sharing similar feelings towards them. BUT after making her watch the first episode she was hooked and we watched all 3 in one night!!! This episode had us nearly weeping together. I also come from a conservative family who would mostly scoff at the fact that I enjoy this show so much for different reasons so its nice to be able to share it with others. I can't wait for the rest of this season and the Mandalorian next month!

I am grateful for this beautiful depiction of a gay male couple living together in love, dying together with grace and dignity on their own terms. For me this is an amazing tribute to all my gay brothers, friends and lovers stricken with AIDS some of whom died in my arms or holding my hands and some who who died frightened and alone because I couldn't be there for them. Thank you to all these fans for reacting to this with such care and human compassion.

Love how critically acclaimed the episode was so now homophobes can't hide behind whatever bullshit, thinly veiled criticism they were gonna latch onto. What ticks me off about many people reacting to the beginning is, so few understanding Ellie. Barking at Joel, what happened is not "her fault", is her trying to convince him AND herself that it's not. That's how some kids react when involved in tragedies. She lacks the emotional and mental tools to process a loss of that magnitude. Especially because of the strict environment she grew up in. Girl is just trying badly to protect herself. Man, this show is something else. Great editing man, all the feels, were felt.

@@durchhalter read again, as I said I adore this. My problem is not this story in particular, but the industry as a whole. Tell me, when was the last time you see Hollywood killing an out/canon lesbian?? HBO's been killing the gays from Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon (Laenor's going to die uneventfully), 2 seasons of White Lotus back to back, and now this?? And Bill's not dead in the game. Which, to bring back to my point of killing/terrible fate for the gays, actually had a darker story for him and Frank! Let's be honest, the reason being ppl consider WLW victory as more palatable than MLM.. thx to the male gaze and the patriarchy. But as long as the strong lesbian made it, they're pro lgbt right??? gays made it till the end? nah... lesbians? FTW, cuz it's sexy.......
@durchhalter
@durchhalter Жыл бұрын
@@Evil_Vegan I get your point and agree with it in general, but in this particular case it‘s kind of misplaced, imo. We‘ve got to enjoy the blooming, growing, and ending of a gay relationship in the most beautiful and positive way possible, without sliding into romantic clichés, and for almost an entire episode. Even their death is as happy as a death can possibly be AND it also has positive meaning for the main characters. Compared to the miserable life Bill survives into in the game, this is an absolute win for the gays. 🙂

This episode made me cry the first time I saw it. But seeing these people reacting to this made me cry even more. It is a romantic and sad episode. Both loved each other so much, that the other can't live without the other. In a world, where zombies took over the world, love is the only thing worth to save. So it is understandeble, that both chose the way how to say goodbye to this world.

The two best episodes from a TV show, in my opinion, were Stranger Things season 4 episode 4 and The Last Of Us season 1 episode 3. I get why some people would be upset that Bill didn't get any scenes with Ellie like in the game and there wasn't much action, but this was an amazing change from the game. It would have been cool to see all of them together for a bit. That would be my only small critique, but I feel like it has so much more emotion to it. Giving them a beautifully sad ending instead of and devastatingly sad ending. And amazing representation of LGBTQ characters.

People can't seem to comprehend that this isn't a video game, and thus isn't primarily centered around said action because that is the gameplay. They're making the show more like how it would go in real life, even providing plausible circumstances for the fungus to infect the population. I think its better off because of it, they aren't restricted to creating this from a perspective of someone playing a game, they can just tell the story and even add to it. I love it. Its not like the Walking Dead, the characters in THIS universe literally avoid the infected at all costs, it makes MUCH more sense that we see less action that includes the infected, because they are only fighting when they have no option to sneak past. Remember the infected in this are runners, with specials similar to the Left 4 Dead zombies (in that there are specials, not necessarily that the specials do the same things) remember they added in the whole "you step on fungus in one place, you can aggro a horde from miles away" which means they have to move even MORE carefully to avoid that too. The show just isn't focused on run and gun like the games were. (You also stealthed a LOT in the games, too)

Same here. In my experience, it was rare to enjoy shows that had gay characters not because of the characters themselves, but because the stories weren’t anything special and felt more like the production prioritized “diversity” over a good story. This episode however, is a perfect story to tell. Prefer it over the game as well.
