What is dMEV?
dMEV or Decentralised Mechanical Extract Ventilation, is a low energy, usually compact, continuous running fan, designed to promote good air quality in the home.
Decentralised simply means they are not designed as a single central whole house ventilation system such as MEV or MVHR systems. Instead, dMEV units can form part of your overall ventilation strategy along with, for example, PIV systems. However, due to their range of features, they can readily be used to replace standard intermittent fans.
Quieter and more energy efficient than standard extractor fans, dMEV units are a popular choice for both new build properties and renovations alike. dMEV units are particularly good at dealing with mould, damp, and condensation problems, by managing humidity and providing a constant movement of air in the home.
Let’s look at an example:

The unit’s party piece however, is the constant volume mode. This clever function automatically adjusts the fan speed to maintain the desired airflow.
If you set the fan to extract at, say 15l/s, then the fan will determine the most efficient mode of operation. Should the wind pick up outside, causing a rise in pressure through your ducting, the fan will automatically speed up to cancel any drop in the extraction rate. Again, should the pressure fall through the ducting when the wind drops, the fan will slow down to the optimum speed to keep the constant extraction level. Clever huh?
