I'm glad I wasn't the only one. You're a 5 to 6 year-old kid playing this game in a dark room, alone at night, parents in a couple rooms down the hallway. You see that familiar Sega logo, fuck yeah! You're in for something nice. But then you're greeted with a barrage of loud, shitty "piano" sound samples in the intro. You're not sure what to expect after seeing and hearing such an alien-sounding composition. Then the lights go out with creepy trumpet samples... then suddenly, the loud and foreboding "piano" sample plays as Mickey's ghostly figure flies away, making it looked like Mickey fucking died rather than going to sleep. As if that wasn't scary enough, you start playing and realize the game is unreasonably difficult. You're just too shocked about not being able to get past the second or even first set of screens. To top it all off, you then have to hear that fucking creepy game over theme while staring at ever-so-slightly moving silhouette sprites. After a few game overs, your parents call out to you that it is bedtime. You jump as they call out to you down the hallway after have played a 16-bit travesty. You regret not have stuck to playing something normal like Sonic the Hedgehog or Streets of Rage. Now you must lie in bed petrified, with those poorly sampled, haunting jingles in your brain. No wonder Disney wanted this pulled from the shelves after seeing it too late.

The biggest issues with this game are the odd controls - you can only jump on enemies by holding down on the d-pad which doesn't always work - the absolute swarm of enemies often with no way around them, and the strange victory conditions. You are required to find the musical notes in each level, or you must replay, but some are invisible and most only appear in sub areas after weird tasks. Worst of all, some of these doorways supposedly leading to notes end up either leading to areas with no rewards, or backwards to an earlier point. Not a good way to combine a collectathon with a traditional platformer, by punishing the player's forward progress.

It was definitely released half-complete. There are too many inconsistencies with how some parts of the game behave. Like you say, notes are sometimes invisible, doorways lead to weird locations. Things just don't seem to make a lot of logical sense. There's no way of knowing how many notes you need to complete a level, or how many you've collected during it. I recall some bits where collecting fairies takes you to a secret level, some take you backwards, and others do nothing.

I'd hate to be bringing console wars into this, but since the movie's score was made up entirely of famous classical compositions, the SNES' sound processor could actually handle samples of real instruments and most SNES games were known for having a more "orchestral" sound to their music than the average Genesis/Megadrive game because of it, I think this game would have more than likely been better if it was on the SNES instead. I don't know if the gameplay would have been any better, but the SNES' much higher quality music capabilities alone would have made it a more tolerable experience.

When I was a child, I thought Mickey Mouse had died in the intro. I couldnt understand English at that time (my mother tongue is Spanish). I thought the Game was about picking stars and other stuff so that Mickey could come to life, lol. Anyway, the dancing hippos were so cute!

What ruins this game is the control. 2 things: The time it takes for mickey to start walking when you press the dpad forward, and in a similar fashion, the lag when you have mickey change direction (especially underwater). You really have to think ahead so you can jump enemies and stuff without ever needing to change mickey's direction on ground (on air its a bit more ok). If someone could make a romhack or an AR Code to remove this turning lag, this game could actually be enjoyable.

This is just a concept that would be hard to be made into a game I mean how exactly do you take a movie thats nothing but animated musicals and turn it into a game. The closest I can think of is maybe an open world but other than that I do not think there is anyway to turn fantasia into a video game. Please if anyone has any ideas as how fantasia could be a game please let me know cause I am really curious.

I played this for the first time day and my observation is that it has good music and nice graphics but very poor gameplay. It didn't really feel like a game, more like a poorly made interactive film. There are great Micky Mouse games on the Mega Drive so it was a bit disappointing.

This could be a decent game.....if the underwater sections didn't control like Mickey Mouse had 50-ton anvils chained to his legs and his whole body. Seriously, if I have to button mash like hell JUST to get him to go anywhere, then it's really bad and DO NOT tell me to use a turbo controller, either, because that's really stupid. If I have to use a turbo controller to get him to anywhere with any decency, then the controls STINK.

Please don’t take this as an offense. But I enjoyed Fantasia when I was very young and still do today. It’s too bad this game version doesn’t live up to our expectations. But I don’t blame SEGA or Disney for trying, even if it seemed like they didn’t.

Push down when you land on them. It's a bit fiddly, but it's the only way. If you're playing on the normal difficulty setting, you need to land on them at least twice to defeat them.

Graphically this game was better than the Castle of Illusion. However it wasn't anywhere near as smooth, collision detection was unreliable and due to this it was frustratingly hard at times.

I think this could have been a great game if they'd just made the improvements you mentioned. It just didn't feel good to play, but I feel it captured the essence of Fantasia itself quite well. I still think Castle of Illusion has an ongoing charm.

It's hard because you have to collect the music notes as you jump on the bad guys. But if you do not press down on the controller at the same time as you land on the bad guy, you get hurt instead. I tried replaying this game recently, I could not even get to the dinosaur level!

It's a very hard game, now about the music: I like it 50 % of the time. Lvl 1 + Lvl 3 are both very good. Lvl 2 is creepy and twisted and Lvl 4 is so-so. Lvl 4 has much action but it's very repititive. Also, I have the PAL-version of this game and I guess this must be the NTSC one; it's way faster than the european.

I persevered when I was a kid and got quite far but it was painful to play. I didn't realise how far I actually got until I returned to it when I did this video and discovered I actually got to the last levels. I was quite young too though, and I think those levels kind of creeped me out in a way. Not scary, but unnerving.

The game just felt like it wasn't finished and was rushed to be released without being tested and polished up. Mickey Mania was definitely much better, although bizarrely I could never complete it!
